Really nice deep briny maritime nose! All kinds of salty sea plants and sea creatures scraped off the bottom of a tug boat, using tarry fishing nets, and then used as coating for a fish barbeque at the beach. It’s much better after the bottle is open a while. You might try decanting this. There’s a buttery note (maybe a square of butter tossed on the cooking fish?). But not cloying. The peat aroma reminds me of Ardbeg. Palate is salty sweet with really nice tarry maritime peat note in the background and an Ardbeg peat aftertaste on the exhale. It has a nice dark fruitiness beneath. There’s quite a lot of salt, which I don’t mind myself. Much stronger peat than the 18-year-old Rock Oyster. Water dilutes the intensity a little, but seems to extend the development over a longer time. If you like intense sherried Islay malts, you should like this.

I found it interesting, also if the nose fives some hint that I haven't found in the palate.

The sherry note is evident, some smoke, and in general, a lot of sweetnes. Salty and vanilla notes.

Spices a little bit, but mostly sweet notes, vanilla ad cake, peat smoke in a very little quantity
    • Finish

Cinnamon and wood smoke but no persistent ad expected

I find this sherry edition more interesting than the original.
    • Nose
      86 86
      Good level of peat.
Not so much sherry, as it's more red fruit and berries mix.
      Briny but sweet.
    • Taste

Nice ballance between sweet and salt.
Solid texture, and some really dark notes here.
      Good amount of warming spice.

An elegant blended malt. Nicely balanced with maritime flavours, dark fruits, sherry and warming spices, perfectly embraced by lingering peat smoke. Rich, lively and well put together. The maturation in sherry casks adds another layer of aroma on top to the standard version of Rock Oyster. Well done!I thank Douglas Laing for the sample and the photograph! https://www.whisky-connaisseur.de/tasting-notes-english/blended-malt-whiskies/
    • Nose
Peat and smoke on the nose followed by cereals and sweet notes of malted barley, and tender sherry. Fruity flavours arrive with oranges, cherries, subtle plums and a hint of dates, too. Fresh sea air, smoked kippers and a whiff of camphor in the background.
    • Taste
Quite oily on the palate. Salty and sweet at the same time. Fruity notes of oranges and bananas, nicely mixed with creamy barley sugar and a warming spiciness of black pepper, oak and cloves. Hintes of sherry and dark chocolate, all wrapped in delicate peat and warm smoke.
    • Finish
A medium long, warm and subtle dry finish with sweet barley sugar, creamy fruit and peat smoke on the tail. Pleasantly mouth-coating.

With water: There's more medicinal notes coming through - camphor and gauze bandage - when a few drops of water are added. Peat smoke and brine but also tender sweet and fruity notes of oranges and dark fruits. Stays sweet on the palate with a significantly enhanced spiciness of cracked black pepper, oak, cloves and allspice. Warm with lingering peat smoke in the back. The finish shows medium length with warming and dry notes of peat, smoke and cloves, while the sweet and fruity flavours are already gone.

  10. thijs100 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

A well-blended malt whisky. Subtle sherry influences lift this one a level higher than its unsherried sibling.
    • Nose
Young, vibrant peat and quite a lot of licorice, as well as a fair hit of smoke and smoked kippers. Some strawberries and cherry syrup. A hint of dates too.
    • Taste
A nice oily mouthfeel. Brine and salt, plenty of peat. A hit of rubber, as well as ripe banana, leather and chocolate. Quite spicy too. Cloves and pepper mainly.
    • Finish
Lingering peat and broccoli. Medium in length.
