An intense, sweet-spicy Glenrothes. In particular, the taste reminds me a little of old bourbon barrel matured Grain whisky, which makes it very interesting. A little more finesse in the smell and especially in the finish but would have done him good.
    • Nose
      87 87
Heavy, sweet and spicy. At first very intense aromas of toffee, caramel, vanillin and some rum. After some time I find a little sweet compote, raisins and blood oranges. A light mint note flashes in between. The massive sweet flavors, which initially override everything, recede slightly. The nose becomes more interesting with time, because it is more varied.
    • Taste
      88 88
Very spicy, sparkling hot, then slightly oily. Milk chocolate, rum, walnut crisp, walnut, associations with an old matured in Bourbon barrels Grain whisky come to mind.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium long and soft. Milky coffee, spicy and sweet rum, nutty bitter notes. Overall, a bit unspectacular.

As this was bottled and released in 2017 it has that ‘last of the Mohicans’ thing going for it. A last wave goodbye by BB&R, dripping with an almost prophetical ‘miss me yet?’ like quality.
    • Nose
      87 87
Vanilla and buttery, lots of melted, caramelized buttery goodness even. Spices – ginger(bread) and nutmeg, toffee and toffee apples, fudge, oranges and soft pepper. Nothing complex but just very sweet, rich and inviting. Add a few drops of water and the fruity and vanilla notes jump straight out of the glass.
    • Taste
      88 88
Pretty much all of the nose returns on the tongue, although the darker and deeper notes are more outspoken now. The wood, spice, caramel and fudge have the upper hand, while the fruity and buttery notes are pushed back a bit. 21 years in oak vessels leave a mark. Quite good in its own right, but the magic happens with the added water (a few drops suffice!). Immediately the balance is restored and those sweeter, softer notes are in near perfect harmony with those deep and dark flavours, while the mouthfeel becomes an absolute feast with a lovely mixture of viscosity and oaky dryness.
    • Finish
      85 85
A last surprise is saved for the finish when a downright explosion of oak echoes on and on.

Something tells me that this one has a typical Glenrothes note; like it or not. But i like it!

  5. Monte Gehro scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

    Notes from a blind tasting.

Good, varied, with a slight sulfur note that is always present. A few drops of water are good, it becomes milder without becoming lame. On the nose it scores with diverse and fruity elements. Then darker in the mouth, more woody, and that's almost at the limit.
    • Nose
      87 87
Nutty sherry, matchstick sulphur, or slightly sulphurized raisins, ripe cherries, plus a clear alcoholic freshness. The sulfur note decreases over time, and a subtle oak spice comes out.
    • Taste
      86 86
Really creamy start, the sulfur announces itself, marzipan, dark chocolate with a high cocoa content, little sweet content. The longer it is kept in the mouth, the stronger a strong wood note becomes noticeable at the end, along with a tingling sensation on the tongue.
    • Finish
      85 85
Long finish, still with some sulphur, slightly bitter at the end, with walnuts and some brown sugar.

    Blind Tasting
    • Nose
Sulfurized raisins and apricots, honey, hazelnut. Vanilla and some pineapple. fir branches.
    • Taste
Hazelnut, almonds, grape seeds. Some green apple. cocoa powder, light wood.

  7. 67conrad67 scored this whisky 88 points Member Senior

Smell: Vanilla sweetness in the foreground, driven by the bourbon barrel, cinnamon, not incredibly complex, but nicely dense, toffee note in the base, light rum tone

Taste: present woody spice, fine bitter tone, slightly on the rough side, especially considering the smooty nose, present alcohol, according to grain notes, sharp finish

Color: copper tone medium WR., Of course

Conclusion: No whisky for every day, the American wood drives, but very tasty when it fits.

    • Nose
      88 88
Sweet, vanilla, after a while also milk chocolate, light spices, hardly any fruity notes
    • Taste
      87 87
Still sweet, but clearly spicier than on the nose and than expected, slightly tingling, the oak is more like the alcohol.
    • Finish
      86 86
Communication, not overly complex, at the end a very slight bitterness

American Oak sounds supposedly like Bourbon Cask, but here there is a clear modern sherry influence, fruity in the nose and spicy-bitter in the taste. A little too little complex and strong in the finish.
    • Nose
      88 88
Plum brandy, rum-raisins, caramel, vanilla, berries. Alcohol well integrated.
    • Taste
      85 85
Powerful and intense approach, significantly less fruity than the nose, stronger on the spicy side, clearly dark chocolate, chocolate coffee beans, walnuts, behind which there is some artificial cherry
    • Finish
      83 83
Also here still strongly spicy and barrel-heavy with bitter substances. Espresso. Wood. A little unbalanced. At the very back, once more Nogger - hazelnut ice cream. Medium length

Surprisingly fun dram with typical sherried, sweet Glenrothes profile. Wisely bottled at 45% abv. Very quaffable. Recommended.

    - a very pleasant tasty Glenrothes,
    - nice aroma, nice to enjoy
    - for originally about 60 € hammer price for the quality!
    • Nose
strong, intense, very aromatic, mild first impression, raisins, caramel, vanilla, old wood
    • Taste
sweetish creamy start, vanilla, toffee, oak, a little stronger in the mouth
    • Finish
      medium-long, sweet finish;
medium to long, very aromatic aftertaste, here again clear spice / oak

  13. schengel10 scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

A great, multi-layered Glenrothes that is / was available at a super fair price!
    [Color] = gold;
    • Nose
      soft, sweet, creamy, lots of caramel, vanilla, honey, yellow fruit;
    • Taste
      aromatic powerful start, like caramel, honey and creamy vanilla, fruit (?), spices, spicy oak, multi-layered;
    • Finish
      medium to long finish, sweet, now also clearly spicy oak, coffee;

    (FROM A BLIND TASTING)
Unfortunately, the finish is a big weak point, the nose a tasty highlight, the mouth somewhere in between. Not a bad dram, but a clear potential for improvement.
    • Nose
Ui, candy cabinet, really plump cream sweets, Werther's, light honey, some almonds and pistachio, later lychee, sweet grasses, but also has a subtle acidity, reminds me more and more of cheesecake (one of my favorite cakes), candied lemon peel, flower meadow
    • Taste
Interesting start, slightly old marzipan, almonds, slightly salted toffee, a little green apple, some lemon, some acid but also candied peel and sweets such as candies, candied ginger, rhubarb, a dash of lime, lychee, tick heather
    • Finish
The finish is almost screaming wine finish, this typical winey, slightly soapy note that can be good and sometimes not so good, here for me the latter unfortunately, somewhat strange aftertaste, damp wood, fruit seeds, pear, grapes, short to medium length

The nose is a dream. You can sniff it for hours. Whoever stands oak is in paradise here. But we speak or taste better above all of the aromatic, sweet, vanilla oak. Not from the bitter bitter European. I really like it. He is a candidate for a large bottle, there would be another bottle here at an acceptable price.
    • Nose
      90 90
The color is a nice strong gold. Very oily streaks can be seen on the edge of the glass. The very first impression - raisins. Sweet raisin cake with caramel. And clear sherry flavors. Prunes, dark red fruits. Toasted nuts. Incredibly intense nose. Spicy, almost a floral nose. Very deep. Interestingly, after some time in the glass I get something like ripe sugar melon as a fruit note, Italian holiday feeling included.
    • Taste
      89 89
Very creamy and soft mouthfeel. Lively and sweet at the same time. A beautiful harmonious spiciness of the oak is immediately present in the taste. The fruit flavors that I had on the nose have now given way to spices like cinnamon and nutmeg and the sweetness. The roasted nuts from the nose are still present. The alcohol with 45% alcohol is super integrated.
    • Finish
      89 89
Intense oak spiciness even at the end. Little bitterness from the oak. There is a bitter note at the end, but it looks more from grape seeds or nuts from the nose than from cocoa or dark chocolate. Very long finish. The oak is really wide in the mouth and lingers there for a long time.

Wonderful whisky, but you have to like bourbon casks. After 21 years, this Scot has an extreme Bourbon taste. The PLV is very decent.

Liquid Wherters Real Candy. Very nice and harmonious filling.
    • Nose
Clearly Wherters real candy, with vanilla, raisins, green apple and some orange. A little damp earth too. Hazelnuts and beautiful oak.
    • Taste
Medium onset, creamy mouthfeel. Again the Werthers Real Bonbon. Lemon apple and raisins. Nougat. Everything is accompanied by a subtle, very harmonious oak note.
    • Finish
Medium. Still the caramel candies, lemon, and beautiful oak with dark nougat.

Overall a good bottling, but the nose and palate are way too sweet for my taste buds.
    • Nose
      81 81
Too sweet and too much vanilla. All the other components are overwhelmed by the strong, almost artificial sweetness.
Gets a little better with time in the glass, but still, that's not for me.
    • Taste
      82 82
      Fruity, but still too sweet.
    • Finish
      85 85
The age provides some complexity and oak bitterness.

Top. Great value for money. The slightly increased 45 percent by volume get him visibly good.
    Excellently matured.
    Nice presentation.
Not just vanilla flavors from the Bourbon Cask, but in my opinion, too, portions of sherry or red wine barrel ripening due to red berries, slight sherry nose, a hint of acidity and bitterness due to oak flavoring.
    A delicious Glenrothes.

    beautiful tasty full-bodied whisky,
slightly lighter and fresher compared to 2016 bottling
    • Nose
Shery, rum, raisins, caramel, prunes, fresh mint, vanilla, lemon peel, cinnamon, cloves
    • Taste
lovely honey, caramel, mint, vanilla, delicate gingerbread spices, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, malt, herbs, lactose, dried fruit apricot
    • Finish
lovely, honey, delicate herbs, dried fruits, plums, raisins, lactic acid

A real vanilla bomb in the nose later comes sherry acidity with woody finish but not too much no way bitter was filled for my taste at the peak of its maturity if you are looking for a vanilla bomb is the right one

I like the nose quite well, creamy, vanilla with some spices. In the mouth he starts similarly, but unfortunately it gets too sour and bitter.

    • Nose

On the nose I thought there is some sulphur but on the palate it is not that strong - the finish is then again more like the nose - okayish but not my preference
    • Nose
Nutty, new leather couch, little citric, hints of vanilla, milk chocolate too
    • Taste
Oily, citrus fruits, berries, apples, nuts, hints of butterscotch
    • Finish
Medium long, warm, zesty, more leather notes
