Older CA bottlings usually do not disapoint me. And this is no exception. In every part there is a complete new world opening up. Impressive! Very complex, there is so much going on here. And surprising all the way. It’s just that the finish is rather short, otherwise this would have been a monstrous dram!
    Do-not-add-water despite of the 64%
    • Nose
This is definitely old style whisky. Totally my cup of tea!
First thing I notice is that I can’t seem to find any peat on the nose which is rather unusual for a Highland Park. Instead there is a meaty style sherry influenced nose. My guess is that this has been a refill Butt which left more then enough space for the earthy and savory HP character. Typical old style musty nose with beautiful subtle sherry notes accompanied by mature aged wood aroma’s. Bacon, nuts and hits of red fruit. Impressive!
    • Taste
Oeh this is a beauty! But man...initialy it is very very very spicy. I feel like I can spit fire right now. But after this intense spiciness faded away, the real fun starts! Very mature flavors! Tobacco leaves, Smoked meat, ovenbaked nuts, leathery and antique wood. It is surprisingly well drinkable at 64% abv.
    • Finish
Medium. But...There it is!! The peat was able to hide for quite a while but I got it now. This is a very pleasant old, well matured peated influence. It doesn’t stick around for that long unfortunately. Finish is the weak spot. If this was of the same level it would have been a complete stunner. Now it ‘only’ comes close to it (which is still VERY good). Seaweed and green herbs leave you to it for some while.

Neat it is quite alright, but it does not take water well. Not a swimmer at all. This one even drowned with only a little bit of water. Thank you, Imanuel, for the very generous sample.
    • Nose
The nose is very sturdy indeed, because of the ABV. It is sweet and powerful. Dark and sweet, even. After the first alcoholic burn, I get dark honey, stone fruit, sultanas, a hint of banana, but also a sour touch as if from rotting oranges. Melon? Loads of earthy notes too. And it works fine. This is very inviting. Water not only makes it somewhat sweeter, but also more sour. Loads of heather. To be honest, I preferred the nose without the water.
    • Taste
On the palate, it is quite scorching, murking the taste somewhat. I do get some honey and lots of yellow fruit, but it is too hot to appreciate undiluted. But unfortunately water does not make it better. It gets some chemical sweetness, while the sour note becomes louder still.
    • Finish
The finish is very long and leaves the mouth completely dry. Diluted the effect is less so, but it also loses a lot of flavor.

Nose: bit alcoholic, as it to be expected. yellow fruits, hint of smoke and some honey sweetness

Taste: a lot of alcohol, a bit too much for my taste perhaps? lots of warm fruitiness

Finish: bit on the dry-side. lychees other fruits.

Comments: overal a very nice dram, quite heavy on the alcohol.
