This is definitely old style whisky. Totally my cup of tea!
First thing I notice is that I can’t seem to find any peat on the nose which is rather unusual for a Highland Park. Instead there is a meaty style sherry influenced nose. My guess is that this has been a refill Butt which left more then enough space for the earthy and savory HP character. Typical old style musty nose with beautiful subtle sherry notes accompanied by mature aged wood aroma’s. Bacon, nuts and hits of red fruit. Impressive!
Oeh this is a beauty! But man...initialy it is very very very spicy. I feel like I can spit fire right now. But after this intense spiciness faded away, the real fun starts! Very mature flavors! Tobacco leaves, Smoked meat, ovenbaked nuts, leathery and antique wood. It is surprisingly well drinkable at 64% abv.
Medium. But...There it is!! The peat was able to hide for quite a while but I got it now. This is a very pleasant old, well matured peated influence. It doesn’t stick around for that long unfortunately. Finish is the weak spot. If this was of the same level it would have been a complete stunner. Now it ‘only’ comes close to it (which is still VERY good). Seaweed and green herbs leave you to it for some while.
