Whisky Reviews for Glenallachie 1996 SV

4 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 83.71 points

  1. Erik1908 scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Nice whisky for a warm spring-day like today. A 50 Euro whisky you can empty with your friends on a nice "Lazy Sunday Afternoon" - as Ray Davies can describe it best. But not at 90 Euro.

      85 85
Fresh citrus and vanilla. Bit fruity but not too much. Not very outspoken. But that is not always required. Bit musty and dusty like which of the old days. Also described like that by Defeatless and Cask1988 below.
    • Taste
      84 84
No full body, but that is not a surprise given the 43% abv. Strange mouthfeel. Part of the mouth says yes; ok. The other part says: bit watery. Not outspoken again.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium long; not bad. Slight woody finish.

This one could have been better at 46-48% abv. We will never know though.

Good and fruity ex Bourbon example
    • Nose
Tropical fruit, ananas, candied mango, a lot of fruit sweetness
    • Taste
Again tropical fruits, very sweet, a hint of lemon, gets more austere towards the end, good balance
    • Finish
The sweet fruits wave goodbye, then dry Wood, dark chocolate, but not a lot of bitterness, dangerously drinkable

Head 2 Head with sistercask: 93541. Both 20yo Glenallachie SV at 43%

This one is not bad at all. I do like that typical older style of whisky. But it must be said that it doesn't give to much more than just that which is a pitty.
    • Nose
Citrussy and light fruit juice. Fresh and lightly grassy/hay. This is like Defeatless says, an old style of whisky. It has a typical musty/dusty blanket covering the whisky. Personally I like that a lot!
    • Taste
Mild, round and thick bodied. It's sweet & sour. Very nice bourbon influences. Vanilla, wood, honey with a hint of pepper. quite a punch although it's just 43%. Well bodied but nothing to remarkable. Somehow it appears to be 20yo, somehow it would also be plausible if they told me this was a younger whisky at cask strength.
    • Finish
Short-medium. Floral notes with a touch of licorice.

A decent old school style of whisky. No flaw, but not very outspoken either.
    Good daily dram.

Sour sweetness, hay and a touch of hay. A little shy nose, but a classic whisky nose. Later you will get some flower notes. And also a hint of woodsap, which I associate with young whisky, although this is 20yo.
No flaws, but not very exciting either.
    • Taste
      85 85
Sweet, rounded and easy. There is a pleasing bitter-sour note. Yet again a classic old style whisky. There is some hay, but also quite some flowery notes.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium length. A bit chalky, sweet and a tad dry. There is some sawdust in here. It goes away with some caramel and wood notes.
