here have been a lot of reviews of this spirit, and it always does well for a reason. it's a quality peated scotch, cask strength, widely available, and fairly priced. it has a nice herbal note in the smoke, and a really enjoyable seawood/olive and salt elements--like going down on a mermaid. My lowest rated in the Core Range.

Boom! A punch in the face
Exactly the way I feel about this one. Probabily the toughest Ardbeg I had so far. Ruthless, the smoke and peat on the nose indicates you that this is a game only for the braves. Dig in, the medicinal, iodine flavor comes out, alongside with some sandalwood grilled bacon flavor.
Mouthfeel, like a bomb literally, spicy and shocking. The finish is so long, that I have to rinse my mouth to try my next whisky.
Strongly suggest drink this as your last glass of the day, as it will definately overpowering and effect your judgement on tasting other whisky.

    Sweet vs Salt
Last time I sipped Corryvreckan was summer 2010. That comes as a surprise (well, to me at least) as it is my second favorite Ardbeg trumped only by the Uigeadail. It is named after a dangerous whirlpool north of the island Islay and matured on French wine casks. Every batch is bottled at 57.1% ABV.
The nose offers the classic Ardbeg traits, but with a twist. Powerful, peaty, maritime, but the twist is in the fact that it also offers orange marmalade, oysters, bacon on the barbecue, a hinit of mango and lots of lime juice. This is a veritable battle of sweet versus salt, without there having a clear victor. I think it’s delicious.
Despite the high ABV, it does not need water. Initially you get a good alcoholic kick to the teeth, but that is immediately softened by sweet notes of red fruit and grapefruit. Then the maritime notes kick in to restore order, while the smoke develops as to threaten to make the fire alarm go off. Mightily good.
The very long, dark and sweet, smoky and spicy finish makes me smile and reminisce.
Note to self: get another bottle of this Ardbeg right now. It’s way to good to go without. Thanks, Pat!

Good sherry and peat whisky, albeit not my favourite in the standard range of Ardbeg.

    Nose: spicy. Oak, herbal, iodine

Palate: more oak, herbal medicine, rubber. Iodine. Ash.

Finish: spicy, thyme? Herbal, like oil of oregano or something. Smoke and ash. Long finish.

Summary: you’ll have to forgive me as this was deep into the tasting. I believe it’s heavily European oak, which is intense. It was mentioned they even had to tone down the European oak from the original recipe...I found it too herbal and spicy for my tastes. It could be context because remember I liked the corry more than oogie last time... still really good. Would not say no to a dram. I think it would shine more on its own too.

An explosion of flavors, more present spices, moist peat, more oak, candied orange and citrus fruit, then cold ashes! a delight.

last cuvée that allows you to get out a dram of high bill still under the bar of 100 eu., a treat!
    • Nose
      peat freshness, mineral and fruity
back of dried flowers and wood shavings
    • Taste
the peat, ubiquitous, heavy, oily, a little camphor, acidulous fruits on citrus ,, highly peppery spices, all that explodes in the mouth, without concession
The fruits almost worn on the lemon let guess orange peels with some dried flowers.
    • Finish
simple, then long, on a peat-fruit combination, then on a return of spices, menthol freshness.

Best and toughest in the core range.

Anything but a designer whisky, this is rugged and untamed Islay at its best!

The faint-hearted might need water though.

Only with a lot of water to endure. Designer whisky!
