Also a free sample, not really my taste profile, here too the short summary is enough ...

    20/21/21/21 (83P)
    • Nose
Light and pale straw in a glass, vanilla with roasted aromas, somehow the nose is really mean ... Metallic, light malt, cereals, yellow fruits, musty, sugar and alcohol.
    • Taste
Tart and thin, fruity, sugar, yellow fruits, subtle burning sensation on the palate, intensifying sharpness, slightly wooden, next sip. thin and watery, briefly fruity sweetness, raisins, initially subtle spiciness which becomes more and more dominant, hazelnuts, oak and sugar.
    • Finish
Voluminous, slightly spicy and woody, hazelnuts, caramel and minimal yellow fruits, maybe a little raisins, long-lasting and warming. The pleasant sharpness lingers in your mouth for an eternity.

Wolfburn Aurora is the sherry influenced maturation in the distillery's core range at Thruso. Aurora refers to the northern lights seen up here in northern Scotland. But can this whisky really shine? It is very light in color, which suggests a short maturation. Ok, the distillery is still young. But maybe clever barrel management can cover up youth?

In the vertical blind tasting, the whisky came third in an overall disappointing field. What does the second tasting reveal?

    • Nose
This whisky is also young. The sherry does not show itself through ripe fruit or dried fruit, it is more present as a vegetable broth. And there is also a lactic acid note, which is limited tasty. It's a young, immature whisky, which shows the nosing. And actually you don't necessarily want to drink such whiskys.
    • Taste
Powdered sugar and sweet fruit juice with vanilla - but also too thin... Something reminiscent of the north, maritime notes, special notes? no With young whiskys, the sweetness is often somewhat artificial and is reminiscent of artificial sweeteners.
    • Finish
Sweet with some wood, no mold, all very nice. But not deep and lasting either.

This whisky is certainly not bad. But he's not convincing either. There are countless new distilleries. All throw young, immature products onto the market and try to present them with marketing as the whisky of the future. At the end of the day, they are often interchangeable, young spirits who still have too little to offer. You can push the whole thing with STR casks, frequent barrel changes and 'active' finishes - they remain young spirits who can be talked about nicely. You don't want to drink it all the time. At least I don't want that. There are tasty wolfburns that have a certain maturity. This aurora is a rather hazy Northern Lights. Unfortunately!

Interesting and young Highland spirit that has a lot of personality and potential.

The nose does a bang up job of being encouragingly complex, while also smelling young. The slightly past-it stone fruits and general booziness complement it, though I have to say, I'm not a fan of pear drops whenever I encounter them.

The middle is not as complicated or long lived, but it provides enough space for the sugar (maybe a touch too much sugar) to manifest its various forms.

At this point the wood becomes more noticeable, mostly the oak from the bourbon barrels, as it jump-starts the alchohol warmth of the tail, rounding out the experience but leaving a bit of a hollow sweetness.

Pretty good, all in all, but there was something I wasn't loving in each section. The pear drops, candy corn and simple syrup finish, I could live without but I think (and hope) will all change with age.

I'm happy to come check in on them again in the future.

    • Nose
Sweet, with notes of cereals (which tend to disappear). We have fishing and a hint of smoke, which is reminiscent of Springbank. Promising. With the opening, unfortunately, the young and a little rough side is revealed.
    • Taste
We find the softness felt in the nose but spoiled by a too hot side, due to excessive youth.
    • Finish
      Spicy, but linear, quite boring.

      Nose 3/5
      Mouth and finish 2/5

always a young whisky ... a young distillery!
    • Nose
malt, cereals, herbs and sweet fruity
    • Taste
the fruits a little cooked, a little dust, dry herbs, the malt is present
fine spices, back a little woody and glue
    • Finish
simple on short finish, it smells of freshness, youth, but the fruits are below, like the woody, there are too many grasses at the finish level

  12. Thermidor scored this whisky 75 points Connoisseur

75 pts. vs Handcrafted's 71. There's still too many reminders of new make for me to want to purchase an entire bottle, but it's slowly getting there.

  13. Andytka3 scored this whisky 75 points Connoisseur

Malty and cereal notes drifts well on the light leathery sweet sherry aroma. Scents of fresh cut grass enhance the freshness. Esters and varnish linger on to offer a broader dimensions. Albeit tinge of spiky young spirit lurking on the finish but overall still pleasant and gentle with reasonable weight.  A mile better compared to Hand Crafted.
