Whisky Reviews for Deanston 2006 SV

  1. Segens scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

    I love sherry, I love whisky and I especially love sherried whiskies but this one is not my type. It has a bit of everything but in the end nothing of anything. Surprisingly boring ...
    • Nose
      The color makes this dram very attractive and I am happy that andyxl was sharing his bottle with me.

      The nose gives a very good sherry influence nevertheless it seems that it is a bit too much of it as the distillery is completely dead (and I like Deanston a lot)
    • Taste
      Sherry yes but it is not sweet and fruity like I would have hoped for it is more colorless leather with some pepper and thats it. Not a disaster but this whisky seems to have "run after it" attitude and it is not fullfilling it.
    • Finish
      The finish is moderate and OK but very short with only some decent bitterness. I agree that it is missing power in the end ("overwatered")

    Brief comparison without detailed notes:

    Deanston 10y PX Finish, WID: 90469
    Deanston 2006 SV, SCS (Single Cask Seasons) Summer 2017, WID: 98681

    The 10y PX received a few drops of water due to the high alcohol content. Strong alcohol note. sweeter in the nose and mouth than the SCS. Neat wood notes in the finish, already enormous for a 10y.

    SCS 2017: tart and spicy in the nose and mouth, but similar to the PX with a woody, almost bitter finish.

    Two or three years ago I still found both of them really good (I had a small sample of them at the time).
    In the meantime I find both of them drinkable, but somehow boring to irrelevant. For me they belong to the variety of young malts in intense barrels, of which there have been a lot recently. The 10 PX is a bit more pleasing, which is reflected in the final rating.

    Very good drinkable, a bit thin, but delicious
    • Nose
      The first impression is good, nice sweet and fruity, slightly bubbly, thus fresh, almonds, vanilla, creamy, some cherry, red berries, a breeze of pepper
    • Taste
      creamy, slightly watery, sweet, red fruit and berries, fruity, milk chocolate, pepper, espresso, vanilla, very pleasant mouthfeel, yummy, not particularly demanding, has a bit of fine drops of chocolates
    • Finish
      rather short, some chocolate, espresso, some fruit

    A great, young, intense malt that was allowed to mature in excellent barrels!
    [Color] mahogany;
    • Nose
      Raisins, dry sherry, spicy oak, strong;
    • Taste
      intense onset, sherry, dark fruits, raisins, nuts, leather, powerful spice, oak, mouth-filling, complex;
    • Finish
      medium-long, spicy finish; in the finish oak, a bit bitter;

    For me, the direction is Easy Drinking Sherrymalt. But I do not think that's really harmonious. Is sherry but otherwise not so much. You can drink it. But I would not buy it.

    Nose likes, taste as described rather not. Sure, quite drinkable and (under certain circumstances) also edible ... but no buy recommendation.
    • Nose
      Dry, dark fruits, raisins, cinnamon light sweetness. Spices come to it, cocoa notes, quite intense.
    • Taste
      If the nose still liked to please, the taste can not really convince. Interchangeable, sweet dryness, but little depth. Almost a bit mineral, youthful. Except the mentioned sweetness, hardly any aromas ...
    • Finish
      Short, dry and sweet.
