Whisky Reviews for Kavalan Solist

- Incredible nose but unfortunately it does not transfer to the palette, I love a sherry bomb and I never thought I would say this but there is just too much sherry here, it totally overwhelms the wonderful Kavalan spirit character yet it has very little sweetness, it actually borders on being bitter. I don't know what the laws in Taiwan are about using paxarette and I've never had any before but the sherry is so intense in this I would not be surprised if this was a paxarette treated cask, they also don't state what type of sherry cask it is to add further suspicion. I not sure, I'm just throwing the idea out there because this was a surprisingly very disappointing bottle from one of my favourite distilleries. I'll look out for bottles that aren't quite as darkly coloured as this in future.
- This was the last malt I tasted at a local whisky meeting and it blew me away. The colour is unbelivably (!!) dark, like coke.
Nose: Hints of herbs, soy-sauce, spicy, balsamic vinegar.
Mouth: Oloroso sherry, again soy-sauce and balsamic vinegar (only a slight touch of it), dark berries, amarena cherrie sauce.
Finish: It just never ends. So long, for minutes. Tongue stays dry, almost gets rough and furryish. Like you ate too much vinegar dressing with sugared gummibears. Then a nice load of oak, gets a tiny bit bitterish, but still extremely round!
92/100, with a tendency to a higher rating. Will have to retaste.
