    • Nose
      Immediately after pouring me powerful smoke billow with honey-sweet accents. The high alcohol content (59.3%) ensures a cooling freshness - without burning or stinging in the nose. I place the intense smoke note in the direction of the campfire, with plenty of ashes and a light tar note. The eight-year aging in first fill bourbon barrels has left its mark: behind the smoke are rich notes of vanilla and caramel, sweet honey, light fruits (sweetened tangerines), freshly cut lemons / limes and maritime notes.
    • Taste
      Wonderfully oily, with almost buttery texture, the Octomore floods my mouth. In the front area, especially on the cheeks and the tongue spreads an intense sweetness. On the tip of the tongue it begins to quake briefly at the first sip, almost 60% alcohol content and 167ppm phenol content set a striking exclamation point. The powerful smoke (campfire, ash & tar) is initially dominant, but leaves the vanilla sweetness, the slightly floral notes and bright fruit enough space for development. Caramel sweets, tangerine cake with sweet cake, honey and citrus fruits are present. Subtle hints of nuts, very delicate oak wood aromas and maritime notes (especially salt and a little bit of lime) complete the taste profile. A slight dryness already develops on the palate.
    • Finish
      Long, warm and sweet and smoky. The thick smoke billows gradually become drier and displace after some time the honey-sweet aromas and bright fruits. For the first time, spicy oak notes sparkle more intensely, but remain in a rather restrained extent. Salty milk chocolate and campfire smoke let the malt finish elegantly for several minutes. The palate gets drier.

    Round and harmonious in the nose, slightly more character in the mouth. Again, sweeter than smoky. Again very successful

      Honey sweet vanilla. Well integrated, pleasant smokes. Maritime and then slightly phenolic flavors. Fresh citrus notes of lemons and tangerines. Milk chocolate is added. A very harmonious overall aroma.
    • Taste
      Strong sea breeze, properly peppered, and burned wood. Here he has more edges than in the nose. The sweetness and the vanilla come through. It may also be some coffee.
    • Finish
      Long. Warming with a smoky sweetness.

    Less smoky than expected, very fine (less powerful) for an Octomore. 8 years in the barrel have tamed the wild horse a bit.
    • Nose
      First, a very pleasant smoky nose comes up, followed by vanilla notes and citrus fruits. In the background I perceive light licorice scent. Despite the almost 60% he is very fine in the nose.
    • Taste
      First a warming sweetness storms into the palate followed by light woody and smoky notes. The alcohol is slowly noticeable on the tongue tip but still very pleasant
    • Finish
      Immediately after swallowing, the alcohol is the most noticeable, a nice residual sweetness then comes out and gives way to the smoky woody notes. Slowly, the palate dries up and there is still some delicately sweet smoke hanging. gloriously

    N: quite fresh, less smoke than expected, peaty, some sea, vanilla, citrus notes M: The beast strikes. The smoke glows on the tongue. Light spice and a lot of phenolic. The Alk is strong, but not biting, goes well in spite of 59% and. A little lemon, green apple, ashes, vanilla, a little sugary, but more on the spicy than sweet side A: Nothing new, except that the ash and wort strike again and fade away with a slight dryness. Fruit only completely removed. The smoke will stay for a while. Nice part- the price out of consideration. Of course very expensive for 8Y. But also delicious. The Alk is top integrated and never looks snappy. A little bit of complexity is missing, but at 8Y Bourboncask I do not expect that either.
    I do not feel the smoke more violently than with Laphi CS, so the PPM does not really notice. However, I like the Laddie smoke anyway very well. 85P

    A wonderful malt! Something buttery and "green" (especially the green pepper and the basil) has not yet come to me;
    • Nose
      Butter and oil, vanilla, butter biscuit, puff pastry, cinnamon, nutmeg, followed by a strong "vegetative" impression: greens, celery, zucchini, green pepper, very restrained smoke, altogether very subtle in the aromas, distinguished and reserved!
    • Taste
      Strong! Vanilla, smoke and grated lemon! Melted brown butter, a lot of vanilla, wood freshly inserted with oil, lots of greens, this time olives and basil! In the background, mineral and calcareous. Smoky yes, but not very strong or extreme!
    • Finish
      Warming, herbs and greens, very balanced and absolutely mouth-filling!

    C: A highly competent & rounded expression, though a tad simpler & more spritely than the previous two Octomore’s. Scores 86, same as last year. With 42000 bottles available, expect this to lap the auction circuit for years to come.

      Farmy peat, honey, sweet smoke, a hint of banana.
    • Taste
      Sweet smokey farmy arrival. Full and viscous. Some herbaceous notes. Nice spice from the high ABV.
    • Finish
      Long, with sweet smoke and spice. Wonderful. I love Octomore.

    An Octomore of 8 years old on American Oak? Well, I expect a very sweet, smoky malt, right? Let’s see if that’s true.

    There are only light farmy notes on the nose, with a touch of vanilla and smoke, but this nose is mostly about ham and cheese. I kid you not, this reminds me of Comté, the hard French cheese from the Jura region. Some citrus in the background. Mandarin! The ABV doesn’t scorch my nose (unless that is already sedated by the 3 Octomore I had before this one). A mild salty edge. Good, but not earth shattering.

    It is sweet and creamy on the palate. The ABV rears its head, but softens up quickly. A lot of vanilla and barley sugar, some powerful spices with a green touch before the smoke and citrus reveal themselves. Caramelized orange peel. Let’s not forget the peat, although the smoke development is quite meager. Some nuts, some honey… but then the tannins kick in and turn this malt very dry.

    That continues in the quite long finish. But it’s so dry that you’ll want a glass of water (surely, that’s not a good thing). And it’s a touch medicinal, which I am not used to from Octomore.

    Octormore remains a fantastic malt in my book, but this is not my favorite expression, to be honest. With a big thank you to PROOF from Ghent for the sample.
