Impressive release, actually, considering the young age. Recommended. This is actually the precursor to the Wolfburn Morven.
    • Nose
Oh, this nose is actually quite good. Fresh and lively with loads of vanilla, breakfast pastry and some smoke. Underneath a nice hint of pipe tobacco, lime juice, young apples and heathery flowers. Quite pleasant and a serious step up from the Aurora that I recently tasted.
    • Taste
It is wonderfully oily and shows lots of earthy notes, followed by lemon pie, honey, all kinds of grasses and dried apricots. Aniseed? The earth is dominant, but quite charming. It gives him some matures that nicely masks the young age. Well done.
    • Finish
In the long finish, it becomes clear that this is a peaty malt – despite only 10ppm – making it hard for the fruit to manifest itself once more. But the pink grapefruit and lime are unmistakable. Quite spicy too.

    • Nose
Starts wonderfully aromatic and surprisingly ripe for its youthfulness. First, sweet fruitiness after fall. Orchard in early autumn ?, salt, soft peat, raw wool and nuts. Really well put together. Over time, cocoa and lightly baked biscuits follow.
    • Taste
Full and well balanced. Polished oak, a bit dirty after sweeping or even invaded earth ?, soft peat, again some fall and salt. Later also sugary hints but also waxed canvas and old dinghy?
    • Finish
Medium length, roasted nuts, light smoke and subtle notes of notes.

I quite enjoyed this one though it did feel a little weak on the palate which was unfortunate, but much potential here for the distillery.Tasted blind as part of the 2017 Usquebaugh Society BTC
    • Nose
Quite malty. Behind that grass and quite a musty smell, like dunnage and old books. Marzipan. Oranges. Honey. Anise. Wintergreen. Some boiled sweets and wine gums too.
    • Taste
Watery palate. Interesting peat character here. There's also some bitter wood and dried apples, some salt, not much above that.
    • Finish
The flavourful part is short, light smoke and bitter wood. Dry feeling and slight warmth lingers.

I liked the nose. The finish was almost non-existing. Tasted a sample on day two of the US Blind Tasting Competition 2017. My guess was an Old Pulteney 10-yo @ 46%
    • Nose
Oranges, ripe red fruit, nuts, rhubarb, figs, peach, some salt, some cigar tobacco
    • Taste
Sweet, ripe red fruit, figs, dark sugar, some cigar tobacco again
    • Finish
Short. Not bitter, not drying. Ripe red fruit die off quickly

I can't say I found this to be an exceptional whisky. To me it lacked a certain balance, especially on the nose. I don't know, just not exactly for me.
    • Nose
Starting off on sweet notes of cookie dough and merengue, but quickly turns into a strange mix of sour cherries, wet rope and some blue cheese even. The tiniest sliver of smoke.
    • Taste
A wonderful, soft smokiness that I barely registered on the nose. Some subtle spices, like cloves and cinnamon, and also a gentle nutiness and light notes of milk chocolate. However, the sourness does also appear on the palate somewhat.
    • Finish
Lingering spices, a whiff of smoke. Medium in length.

  20. KayMeertens scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Malt, smoke, caramel, pear, banana, dough and candied cherry.
    • Taste
Malt, caramel, smoke, anise, vanilla, tangerine and a little blueberry. Somewhat peppery and slightly schnapps-y due to its youth.
    • Finish
      Caramel, malt, smoke and cherry.

Much more convincing than the other Wolfburns I've tasted. Enthusiasm: Nose and Mouth 3/5 Final 4/5 Whisky n ° 1570
    • Nose
Young and fresh, hazelnuts and malt (in the DHG style), thyme and other aromatic herbs, traces of vanilla. Then more vanilla in fact. He rounded slowly.
    • Taste
Full. Burnt notes, quite spicy. Beautiful texture.
    • Finish
Warm, beautiful round and relatively long for his age.

    Conclusion and pictures on: https://tomtrinkt.de
    • Nose
The new Wolfburn starts surprisingly multifaceted. Plenty of bright fruits, vanilla and light smoke are pouring out of my glass. The alcohol content of 46% is very well involved - I perceive neither a burning nor stinging in the nose. Floral hints, sweet honey, crème brûlée, plenty of caramel, bright fruits, including apricots, fresh apples and a hint of peach dominate my first impressions. The background is always a pleasant smoke. At the very far away, I already register spicy hints of oak. The basic character is pleasantly light, but without being powerless, predominantly fruity-fresh and balanced. The unusually small Bourbon barrels have done a great job so far!
    • Taste
With a silky soft texture, the Wolfburn dresses the mouth. The alcohol content of 46% ensures a powerful start. At the tip of the tongue a slight tingle (pepperiness) develops at short notice, before an intense sweetness floods the palate. Vanilla, caramel, honey, juicy apples, apricots, oranges as well as hints of exotic fruits (melon & peach) dominate on the fruity-sweet side. Always in the background are spicy oak notes, hints of milk chocolate and the beautiful smoky note.
    • Finish
Medium long and sweet smoky. The sweet and fruity notes rear one last time before the spicy notes of oak and the slight smokiness noticeably pick up speed. It is noticeably drier on the palate.

Nose. more aggressive than the other two (hand-crafted and vibrant stills), lots of malt, spices, vanilla, menthol alcohol, tender musty smoke (will even get really drenched with time). Taste: like the other again very supple, hardly any alcohol to feel, toffee, malt and vanilla, old gammeliges burned wood, the smoke is discreet but very musty, some tar, medium-long bitter finish.
The Wolfburn with ungetorften malt I find something better. Still a very interesting malt and tip for his age.

a rough and raw young whisky, quite exciting, let's see where the journey leads to Nose, mouth and finish already have tension Ranking: 1. mouth, 2, finish, 3. nose
    • Nose
warm spicy malt behind smoky cool menthol note, tar Something is too much for me here, is it the menthol or again this intensely spicy malt note with the beer feeling? The nose looks a bit slanted, but could well be liked
    • Taste
Cool on, again smooth and malty tingling, a cool Waldmeisternote in the background is superimposed by menthol, very tingling, malty, beer feeling, slightly smoking on the palate and throat, floral malty notes with slight Fruchtanklängen, behind some oak and bitter grapefruit I like his mouth better than the nose, which change and already have a certain tension
    • Finish
long intense Malt, acid tingling, slightly bitter, slightly smoking from the throat

Can you see, not bad at all, on the contrary. I am surprised how mature he is with his only four years.
    • Nose
Fermenting green sliced on a compost: that will be the smoke ... The nose comes in "muted colors" therefore: ripe blackberries, overripe red grapes, almost fermented. Milk chocolate, cocoa, toffee.
    • Taste
46% like the Wolfburn "First Release", but much better integrated. Beautiful notes of nuts and almonds, roasted orange peel, vanilla, milk chocolate, toffee. If the spices (which are not available here) are missing, then it would be the ingredients for a Lindt Christmas chocolate.
    • Finish
Medium to short, still fine nutty, now with some wood, old leather and honey.

  27. LiquidThoughts scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

For me the best Wolfburn so far and I liked it all so far, it is getting more promising ...
    • Nose
Cereals, full of beautiful honey, bitter orange, dried apricot, subtle vanilla in between, marzipan, cinnamon as well, a touch of salt vllt. and apple peel
    • Taste
Full of honey, caramel everywhere, honeydew melon, cinnamon, marzipan, hazelnut, dried hay, chocolate, really strong as I know it from Wolfburn, of course not the dignity of a 16 year aged whisky, but very impressive in the mouth, apple peel, some vanilla also, nutmeg
    • Finish
Medium long, a little more subtle smoke, astringent, cereals, apple peel

After the nose I was spectic, but the taste was convinced me.
The bourbon side is good for the distillery character.
    • Nose
Honey, vanilla, apple peel, toffee. Touch of salt, peat and smoke.
    • Taste
Strong, sweet, spicy. Honey, red apple, caramel, mixed fruit jam. Nutmeg and pepper.
    • Finish
Medium length, especially oaky. Touch of smoke.

I'm often championing the patience of leaving a well-aged whisky in the glass to rest - here's a young whisky where I'd offer the same advice. Wolfburn No.128 *really* benefits from a 10 minute chill out before drinking. The peating is highly sympathetic to Wolfburn's underlying spirit allowing it's natural expressiveness to still shine through, whilst offering up a new take on the Wolfburn experience. Fresh, clean and very drinkable, No.128 should get everyone in the mood for the upcoming Morven release, and future peaty bottlings from the distillery.

    https://www.thedramble.com/tastings/wolfburn/wolfburn-no.128/
    • Nose
Fresh out of the sample bottle in to the glass there's an initial big hit of tobacco smoke - this subsides very quickly and is no longer discernible after a short period of resting. Lemon peels are sweetened by toffee, honey and vanilla notes. Warming peat is ever-present, but never overwhelming and is part heathery, part smoky. There's an underlying earthiness and mild salinity, both of which I'd associate with Wolfburn's spirit.
    • Taste
Sweet honey first and then apples, and honey-dew melons make for a really fresh, crisp and clean experience. Light vanilla, and light smoke, as with the nose, the peating is very sympathetic. Again, there's quite some difference when rested with development lengthened and flavours deeper and more complicated.
    • Finish
Medium length finish with a well-judged level of tannic astringency from the increased contact with the smaller barrel.
