Adore the nose, less convinced by the palate, but it rounds back into form again in the finish.

I like this immediately. Nice, fruity sherry – blackberry and redcurrant, perhaps – with finely structured oak in the background. An excellent (European oak?) sherry butt. Extremely harmonious, almost "seamless", without any rough edges. More herbal and floral notes after a while. Christmas cake / Stollen and speculoos. Red licorice and old leather, but it never gets musty or stale. Interestingly, an idea of smoke after a while. And there's always this fruity acidic backbone connecting everything.

You're reminded of Glendronach and (dark-sherry) Glenfarclas, but that's the cask influence – the spirit here is way lighter, thinner, and much more sour and has considerably less weight and texture. There's almost a fizzy feel to this (sherbet powder). Flavor-wise this is fine, with plenty of dark chocolate, red berries and roast nuts, but the mouthfeel is supporting my previous impression that Macduff is not my favorite make.
    • Finish
      89 89
The spirit recedes into the background, and the cask takes over again, which is for the better here. Very astringent, with more and more sour / bitter notes at the end, like a fruity, but also acidic and tart unsweetened espresso. Cranberry and mocha, perhaps? The oak really has a lot to say, with plenty of resiny and herbal facets. A savory / umami, almost salty aspect, like in old Bunnahabhains. I'm near certain this is drawn from European oak by now. There's an idea of smoke in the aftertaste – no idea where that's coming from. Exceptionally good, but also kind of uncompromising. You definitely need to be able to tolerate some bitters.

    Macduff 26 year old 1991 (cask 4583), Chieftain's, SMSW, 46%.

30ml sample at home Apr 2022.

    Dark golden or light amber.

Aroma is light, lemon and ginger tea, very light and ethereal. I’m not saying it’s muted or closed – it’s open and expansive but it’s also airy, light.

Given time more of the sherry cask comes out. Pomegranate, strawberry maybe, backed up with a faint biscuitiness.

Subtle, enjoyable. Not a showstopper by any means but nice.

Body is very lightly oily – just a fraction slicker than water.

Taste is spicy refill sherry cask. Plummy, slightly lactic, then char and chilli. Pretty nice, and grew on me.

Good cask character – not too bitter from age and not one of those gloopy non-emptied cask first fill abominations that everyone else seems to like. Has refinement, and is an honest straight-up Scotch whisky. The spiciness is at a nice level – keeps on drawing me back in. Up front I thought it might be too spicy but as I settle into it I can’t get enough of that spicy honest sherry cask character. It keeps everything interesting!

I might have scored this a little higher if I’d had 60ml - it's one of those that keeps drawing you back in. Good stuff. You don't really have to pay this much money for a similar experience but I wouldn’t be too disappointed if I had splashed out on a bottle - it wouldn't get overlooked on the shelf. 3.6/86

    Beautiful complex and changeable nose.
But then it becomes a little weaker. The finish is also rather one-dimensional. Still very interesting through the nose.
    • Nose
      90 90
Moist forest soil and fresh, ripe strawberries or raspberries. A little lemon and unfortunately the alcohol.
Orange as well as clove and cinnamon. It's easy to move towards mulled wine.
Then he changes. The forest floor dominates, the alcohol evaporates. Grapes appear. Light wood and light beer notes. Maybe minimal smoke as well as some honey with bitter almond. Some marzipan.
    • Taste
      88 88
Unfortunately not sweet, but rather dry.
The wood influence becomes stronger. Lemon, bitter almond, grape and marzipan remain. Some herbs.
Only with the second sip is the sweetness and waxiness stronger.
    • Finish
      86 86
Mittelland with dry sherry. Minimal waxiness. A bit uncomplicated compared to the previous aspects.

See StyrianSpirit notes. He describes it well. I have nothing else to add. Splendid whisky! Haven’t had such a dangerously quaffable drink for a long time.

Very nice and pretty complex whisky, lot's of sherrycask influence, tobacco and some smoke and red fruits. Surprising and enjoyable.
    • Nose
      90 90
Earthy notes, and a (pleasant) smell of paint?! Prunes as well, and tobacco, some bonfire smoke. Chocolate, leather. Later on more (red) fruits.
    • Taste
      88 88
Smooth, just a very little tickering, leather, some tobacco, earthy notes. Licorice, strawberry lipgloss (from the childhood past)
    • Finish
      89 89
Now a bit heavier, a bit fruity as well. Again tobacco and a hint of smoke, long finish, and some Haribo sweetness.

I like it. Very tasty malt.
    • Nose
The starts equal relatively delicate and elegant. Here, of course, red fruits. Rather strawberry. Raspberry. Mon Cheri. Wine gums. Tree resin. Maybe even a bit of banana. Again and again a certain floral note. Reminiscent of lavender.
    • Taste
Amazingly powerful and stormy. I did not expect that. But he does that well. Red grapes. Cowardly. Wine gum cherries. Red shower sticks. Sugared rhubarb. Now properly seasoning and it gets more bitter. Blood orange. Grapefruit.
    • Finish
Ginger. Black tea. Nutmeg. Some soft fruits.

An exceptionally good sherry malt. The nose is wonderfully layered and changes with time in the glass between sherry, berry fruit, damp forest soil, smoke and some wood. On the palate, the malt turns into spice, wax, smoke and coastal flavors. In the long finish then come again sherry and dark fruit. Lively.
    • Nose
Deep sherry, dark berries on a damp forest floor, light smoke runs through the bushes. Something oak announces itself, the berry fruits come again, the Malt makes wonderfully oily legs in the Premium Snifter. The anticipation is rising.
    • Taste
The tingles neat, now take over wax and herbal notes, the sherry and the forest berries step into the background. The ground is wet, we are now on the sea beach, maybe on Islay, maybe on the coast of the northern Highlands.
    • Finish
The graduation is medium to long and very complex, because when re-tasting now the dry sherry and the berry fruits, waxiness passes, the smoke takes a little longer to breathe life. Sustainable and beautiful.
