Whisky Reviews for Mortlach 2001 Wy

An aperitif whisky. Unfortunately, the typical "dirtiness" that can otherwise be found at Mortlach is missing. So the distillate appears harmonious and pleasant, but also a bit boring and somehow meaningless. As if the barrel had already seen its best days when this fire came in. Nice to have drunk it, but also nothing to remember.

Subtle. Light fruits (gooseberry, melon and a little light plum), light vanilla and a little grain (oatmeal). A little bit of alcohol tickles the palate. As I said, very subtle, albeit aromatically harmonious and harmonious. Somehow I didn't find the orange.
    • Taste
      83 83
Sweet and fruity, like a fresh fruit salad that has been flavored with vanilla. Plus fresh grass. With longer standing times, there are even darker notes such as leather and a slight barrel bitterness. Like the aroma, the taste is quite subtle.
    • Finish
      82 82
Sweet and medium length, slightly dry at the end.

Mortlach goes well with sherry cask, those ex-bourbon bottlings (my guess) are not as pleasant but still quite good
    • Nose
Honey, Caramel, Roses, Orange, Fresh Tabaco
    • Taste
Slightly bitter, a touch of smoke and meat, orange peel
    • Finish
short to medium, the bitter touch remains longer

this dram is quite ok, still nothing of which  I would need a whole bottle.
    • Nose
i find that this one noses older than 15 or 16 years.
a fruity profile counterbalanced by polished wood and a thread of smoke.
I wouldn´t have said melons but there are different citrus fruits like oranges, tangerines and lemons. perhaps italian plums, perhaps peaches.
after 5 minutes I cannot find the smoke anymore, the oak has remained. light vanilla.
    • Taste
juicy mouthfeel, very spicy and much less fruity than the nose. rather malty and quite some oak.
orange peels, vanilla and hints of honey.
    • Finish
      medium, perhaps a little flat

The name hits the flavors quite well: melons and orange-like fruits.

In the nose there are interesting citrus flavors, as in the official description peach and more exotic like pineapple. The whole is not intrusive and beautiful to discover. If you give yourself some time, my impressions changed in the direction of meadow herbs, dried fruit - but with the restriction that it wants to be discovered and not obtrusively flood the senses.

On the palate dominate more the pineapple and orange flavors. But also the citrus parts are getting stronger.

The finish is medium long and leave mainly citrus. The desire for more and renewed nosiness comes afterward and I caught myself hanging out of my nose and chasing after the different flavors.

Conclusion: a delicious filling. Invites you to taste more without being intrusive. If you give her time, she will reward you with a variety, especially in the nose that I have rarely experienced from Mortlach.
