[January, 2019] A quick review of a sample. This is a fine and very interesting old-style Traditional Scotch with a delicious taste that reminds me a little of great old Calvados. Dangerously quaffable...
    • Nose
      90 90
The colour is pale gold and the nose offers a rich old-style profile with tons of vanilla-toffee aromas in a mead and apple vinegar dressing. Hey, this is bold and strange and ... interesting! It turns a little sour over time but additional spices and earthy aromas pep it up, again. Very unusual and maybe not the most delicate nose but very exciting to explore...
    • Taste
      92 92
The taste is layered on all different kinds of apple flavours (calvados, cooked, fresh) complemented by exotic fruits that are hard to name. Hey, this is tasty and again very interesting to explore! It gets even sweeter over time but the spices and delicious herbal notes keep the balance. Water turns the dram smoother and fruitier but I like the power of the neat dram best.
    • Finish
      90 90
The dram arrives a little hot in the mouth and coats it nicely with a creamy feeling and no distracting moments. The finish is of medium length and could be longer as it extends the beautiful taste with some spicier impressions that are highly welcomed after the rather sweet taste. No distracting moments here, all is fine.

    • Nose
Great reputation, and I can immediately see why. Fruity, but with depth and complexity. Banana pudding, creme brulee. Butter pecan. It's the thick, fudgey kind of sweetness that is so different from the artificial kind that a younger or an inferior bourbon cask puts out. Also a bit of mosquito incense and moth ball and Baygon insect spray?!? (woah, where did that come from? I haven't used Baygon spray in 30 years, and I still know exactly how it smells like.)
    • Taste
Totally fresh. And yup, mothballs! A weird type of mothball-like fruitiness that actually works great!!! Menthol. Lemongrass/lychee cocktail. Also honey dew (lots), fresh red apples, Korean pears, lotus root, daikon -- just a bunch of white fruits and veggie (or root plant). High level malt.
    • Finish
Reaches a high note and stays there for a while. Burp. Wait a minute, I just burped some coconut pudding, no joke.

This is a tremendous older bourbon cask malt that can beat fair and square just about 99.9% of heavily sherried, manufactured stuff that lazy producers are bottling nowadays. 93, maybe 94 points.

Very nice bunnahabhain. Very different nose and mouth. It's very sweet.
    • Nose

      Fairly meaty and smoky nose.
Bacon, barbecue, black ash, smoke, tobacco, light lemon and orange, gingerbread.
    • Taste
      92 92
In the mouth it is super pretty. Very nice tension.
Mineral, citrus, wax, cold ash. All perfectly balanced.
      Lemon, tobacco, orange, citrus candy.
      It brings back to childhood.
    • Finish
      91 91
Long finish on orange, lemon, wood, sweet Smurfs. Super nice but a little sweet.

A beautiful old, dignified and balanced Bunna.
Perfectly integrated alcohol, no bitterness, beautifully harmonious with good fullness.
    • Nose
      92 92
Lots of honey, old apricot jam, mirabelles, a touch of maritime undertones and some undergrowth. Also some furniture polish, spicy and mint. And in the background a fine tick of dry smoke floats. Deep and elegant.
    • Taste
      91 91
Starts very round and tasty. Oily. Apricot jam, then dark block malt, a little fine white pepper and cloves, a hint of smoke. Full and focused. Dunnage warehouse.
      Rich volume, for chewing.
    • Finish
      92 92
Salty, malty, spicy (fine pepper and cinnamon), oak, very long. Salty fudge and cocoa. Again, a fine hint of smoke floating in the background. Dry, but not bitter.

In my experience, it's rare that the palate outperforms the nose, but that is the case here. I'd say the nose is just a bit too sour for my liking (still very good though), while the palate is just insanely pleasant.
    • Nose
Quite pungent. A tad lactic, accompanied by a rush of oak, before moving on to sour notes. Vinegar-y almost. Freshly squeezed lemons, a few apricots, and some honey as well. Somewhat spicy too, think chili peppers.
    • Taste
This is where this Bunnahabhain shines. Mature, but never tired and always vibrant. Restrained oak, with a very soft note of ginger. There's sweet honey, apple crumble, and apricots, as well as white grapes. Loving this, a lot!
    • Finish
Medium in length, somewhat dry, with sweet fruits.
