    Tasting Notes by Adelphi;

    1 of only 227 bottles from cask no. 1126
    Apart from two butts of 25YO in 1992, and a 12YO in the Flora & Fauna series, Strathmill has never been bottled by its proprietor, and is uncommon in independent bottlings. This is a treat! It comes from a refill hogshead and is the colour of old Sauternes. The nose is immediately ‘elderly’ - sandalwood and sawdust – but this is soon replaced by scents of Eve’s Pudding (apple sponge) then Madeira cake, with glacé cherries, decorated with glacé Angelica root. Complex aromas, constantly changing. The taste at full strength is sweet, with a long finish, like coffee beans dipped in bitter chocolate. Water brings out sugared almonds, and memories of Italian weddings. It has a soft mouthfeel, is sweet overall, with a centre-palate engagement, and a long finish with chocolate and almonds. One to linger over.

    Blind tasting of the Archive Series version of this whisky (rebottled and repackaged),
    • Nose
      dry, slighty dusty, bourbon, green apples, fizzy melon, (Juicy Fruit), chalk
    • Taste
      oats, oily?, creamy, soft
    • Finish
      short->medium; menthol suggests a hogshead

    Strathmill 31 yo 1976
    (44,8%, Adelphi 2008, cask #1126, 227 btl.)

    Nose: warm apple cake with cinnamon. Malt, dried grass and dust. Not super-fresh, there are hints of a melon that’s past its prime. Honey. Something minty / flowery – close to being soapy. Sandalwood. Mouth: starts herbal and rooty, with hardly any fruits (a bit of lemon peel maybe). Plenty of spices (pepper, ginger, cloves). A bit austere. After a few seconds, it starts to get bitter – very bitter and quite harsh. Woody and resinous aftertaste. Finish: long on tonic and lemon zest with very bitter chocolate.

    This Strathmill has some glorious elements, especially on the nose, but overall I don’t find it particularly enjoyable. Too expensive anyway. Around € 175.

    Score: 77/100

    Add some water to get a more fruits. Nice and complex fruity nosing. It's interesting how the aroms change on the tongue if you add some water.
    • Nose
      fruity, red apples, some berrys, ohter fruits, better when warmed up
    • Taste
      becomes sour fast, wood, apples, at the beginning it seems to be tasteless for a second
    • Finish
      wood, more fire, some smoke, long, fruity (apples again)
