Whisky Reviews for Ballechin 2004 SV

4 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 87.20 points

  1. Gaija scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

    The kind of dram that should remind you that we're not drinking labels. Ballechin can slowly become proud of itself : this is a monstruously good peaty-sherry. It's not very complex of course, but its delivery in this category is unmatched at this age and price. I don't even get why anyone would buy Uigedail at roughly the same price when they're looking for peat and sherry.
    • Nose
      (Festival note) What an incredible monster ! This slaps you in the face with an incredibly concentrated profile, extremely meaty first and foremost. Ardenne's smoked ham, leather, smoked black meat, moist cigar, few ! Incredible. It's so deep and dark, with an incredible balance between the aforementioned salty treats and some sweeter darker notes of marinated prunes and molasses.
    • Taste
      I suppose nothing get as close as this to biting a burning log of firwood. Horse sweat, leather always, damn. Pipe tobacco. Stewed dates, bacon. Memories from the scouts camp arise ...
    • Finish
      Long, in the same vein, not overly woody.

  2. schengel10 scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

    A very successful Malt - 12 years matured in sherry barrel!
    [Color] copper;
    • Nose
      aromatic smoke, lots of sherry, raisins, berries, nuts;
    • Taste
      diluted: a powerful fruity onset, full of smoke, oranges, raisins, leather, oak, dark chocolate, creamy;
    • Finish
      medium-long, creamy finish; in the end very nutty and smoky;

  3. Bishlouk scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

    Nothing has changed, it's still the same slap. To try (or try) in blind, just to ignore the name sexy and little seller (even if the reputation of Edradour / Ballechin tends to be more positive over time). An excellent "peaty / sherry".
    • Nose
      He is always present and attractive, from the nostrils soaked in it. Peat (half-farm half-camphor) blends harmoniously with tobacco, thick caramel, dried and candied black fruits, and even with an orange freshness. It's really complex for a whisky not especially old.
    • Taste
      Power is needed directly. Hot ash, the peat layer is very mineral. Around gravitate pepper spices, black fruits, orange zest, dark chocolate, tobacco ... there is a lot of things that mix but in a controlled cohesion.
    • Finish
      Long. A puff of ash smoke rushes into the throat. Spices tickle the tip of the tongue. Dry wood is then installed.
