Whisky Reviews for Glen Elgin 1995 MBa

15 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 87.78 points

  1. Calmar scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Pleasant mute, powerful, fresh, but at the same time transparent, airy, summer, deep enough and complex, very positive, in development it becomes sweeter and vanilla.
    • Nose
Restrained, moist, the first nose - raw wood and viburnum; processed boards, vegetable oil, popcorn, light mineral notes - dry stones, plaster; light shades of green apples and lemon zest
    • Taste
Powerful, invigorating, lemonade, tart oak, flower-honey notes, sweet pastry shades, vanilla, ginger, mineral water, lemon zest.
    • Finish
Refreshing, warming, ginger, red pepper, candy drops, lemon candied fruits, light oak bitterness, red mountain ash, vanilla.

  2. Dirk scored this whisky 88 points Super Administrator

A good Glen Elgin, slightly different then I would expect from the typical profile but nevertheless good! This at another 15 years would have been very interesting.
    • Nose
Cookie dough, vanilla, honey, cereals. A bit floral and a touch of lemon. Some buttery notes, a hint of caramel. Some minerals and olive oil.
    • Taste
Slightly waxy, some parafine, sweet cereals, barley. Herbal notes, honey and a little ginger. Menthol at some point, faintly in the background though. Quite sweet on the palate which feels like something sugared not just just the honey.
    • Finish
Midlong finish on ginger, barley and a bit of cookie dough or pastry. Menthol layered in some waxiness.

  3. Kensay scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Cool whisky, unusually fresh and balanced. Almost no alcohol
    • Nose
Fresh, field, honey wax, field herbs, lemon peel, dusty attic
    • Taste
lemon juice, tropical fruits and cinnamon, oily
    • Finish
refreshing, mint, a little ginger and melon, a little woody notes

    Muesli

Maltbarn is a German independent bottler from Stadland that releases single casks at cask strength on a very regular basis. This is a Glen Elgin from 1995 at cask strength.

Deliciously fruity nose on apricots and peach, dark honey, smoldering wood and popcorn. Granny Smith apples and lemono kick in. Hint of cookie dough. Nuts. This is a liquid muesli. Some mineral notes as well, as if I have some wet stones in my glass. And a drop of olive oil. This is very good!

Oily and softer than expected on the palate. Immediately some pepper and ginger, sure, but also liquorice before the fruit takes the reigns once more. Lots of citrus (grapefruit!), then pineapple and lemons. Some melon. The apples return. Apricot pastry. Becomes somewhat drying because of the oak, but remains sweet enough. There is even a touch of waxiness. I’m a fan!

The finish is wonderfully long, pretty spicy with an oak bitterness. At the death I get some lemon juice over a slice of melon. Nice!

Superbly summery Glen Elgin. Well, I could have done a lot worse for my 25th encounter with this distillery.

Chamomiles, herbs, rather a flaky infusion, that's great!

    • Nose
Muesli, exotic nose - yellow fruits, apples, especially lemon, yummy but restrained
    • Taste
very valuable citrus notes - pineapple, partly crystalline, dry, light spicy oak - grapefruit skin, lemon zest, slightly mineral, the palate looks very valuable, but does not like too small sips
    • Finish
Seasoning, light wood, some wax - especially bright juicy oak sounds long after, pepper and wax are on the tongue
