An exciting whisky that I like. The nose and the taste are really first class. A nice fruitiness, sweetness, chocolate and nuts. The change in taste is exciting and gives an extra dimension. However, it is not really my first choice to finish, a bit too harsh and surprisingly wooden-dominated.

    • Nose
In the nose penetrates directly a chocolate note. Matching with almonds and marzipan complement this sweet character. However, some alcohol is added too. But at 52.6%, that's fine too! Behind it lies a pleasant fruit. It could be apricot, but it may also be a slightly bitter orange due to its association with the alcohol. In addition, for me is still a very subtle note of Bourbon, I always feel that as a mint. The finish does not overlap the pre-maturity. I'm curious about the taste!
    • Taste
It starts pleasantly mild. Really delicious fruity whisky flows into the mouth. Bright fruits, apricot, grapes, a light orange. Then the alcohol presses on the gas pedal. Not in the negative sense, I think. For a whisky starter, it would definitely be too much. Seasoning, wood and barrel come to the fore and lay heavy on the tongue. An exciting change!
    • Finish
Here the fatcairn weakens something. For me, the wood notes remain too dominant. Yes, there is something very dark chocolate coming through, cocoa, maybe even some coffee (I rarely drink myself!). But after some time, especially a bitter note remains that I do not quite want to taste.

Water: with a little water, the sweetness in the nose becomes very intrusive and the berry notes intensify, but against the sharp pepper notes in the taste also the water does not help

Conclusion: mmhh, a bad bourbon barrel, where you wanted to cover with the sweet Madeira pepper notes? That's how it affects me at least. Overall, nose is very handsome, but the pepper in the taste and too strong tannins in the finish I do not like

Berry fruits, especially raspberry and blackberries, dried and sugared peaches, the alcohol is present and stands out with some mint and pepper in the nose, some white chocolate and some hazelnut shells, vanilla cream, malt / cereals, the "baked" sweetness of Madeira is unmistakably there, with hand warmth comes some beeswax
    • Taste

oily, clear sweetness, but then gets very strong pepper notes. some fruits and wood
    • Finish

short to medium, here too the very strong notes of pepper and chilli, a little fruity sweetness and back he is not very dry, but still bite the oak tannins with full force

An exciting whisky that surprises with this unexpected sharpness and intensity in the taste. The Madeira finish certainly brings the fruit component in, which I do not find so pronounced.
    • Nose
Shortly at the beginning I had a subtle alcoholic note, which is gone immediately. First, I discover lighter nuts and sweet chocolate, as well as the often mentioned nougat. Add marshmallow sweeties. A touch of spice and slightly kräutrig. Fruit is also there, if only subtly, can also be difficult to define.
    • Taste
Rich start, very warm, creamy and even slightly spicy. Now I have strong, dark fruits like dates and blackberries. Nice sweetness, accompanied by a slight bitterness. The chocolate is now darker.
    • Finish
The long finish is mild compared to the start, although the sharpness is still felt. Dark chocolate and roasted aromas. No more fruit. Becomes subtly dry and leaves a slightly bitter impression.

A delicious, strong malt. The Madeira finish underlines the spicy and nutty notes of the Fettercairn, which are already present in the distillate character. However, this does not create any increased complexity. PLV fits for me at 60 euros for the bottle.
    • Nose
Strong-nutty. Distinct hazelnuts. Then he is getting sweeter and nougat. Smells extremely delicious for me as a nougat fan. Almost like a nut schnapps or liqueur.
I do not have fruit notes at first. Only very late a light berry acid, which I would most likely call raspberry.
    • Taste
Strong start. Velvet mouthfeel. Pepper. Hazelnuts. Not as sweet as the nose. Slowly drying with oak and chocolate.
    • Finish
Dominated by the strong, slightly sharp (pepper!) Impression on the tongue. Little length in the throat. At the end comes again the oak with dark chocolate notes.

An impressive and reasonable complex Highlander. The fruity notes of the madeira cask are dominating the nose. On the palate, however, the American oak overpowers the fruitiness with vanilla, pepper and warming oak spice. Not unbalanced though. A pleasant transformation from fruitiness to spiciness and dry cocoa on the finish. Very enjoyable both neat and diluted.I thank Arne Wesche from whic (Whiskycircle) for the sample and the photograph! https://www.whisky-connaisseur.de/tasting-notes-english/fettercairn/
    • Nose
The nose starts off with lots of nougat, toffee and red fruit - raspberries in particular. This is accompanied by vanilla and a hint of fresh lemon, followed by slightly bitter notes of unripe peaches and a whiff of oak in the background.
    • Taste
Deliciously sweet and creamy, almost silky on the palate. Fruity notes of peaches and grapes emerge, nicely mixed with vanilla and honey, before a warming spiciness of oak and black pepper takes over. Lingering dark chocolate and walnut notes are leading to a warm finish.
    • Finish
The finish is medium-long and slightly sweet with honey and malted barley. Dry cocoa and warm oak spice on the tail.

With water: There's even more fruit coming through on the nose when a few drops of water are added. Fresh with lots of peaches, rasberries and more floral notes. Subtle sweet and silky on the palate with a pleasant mix of grapes, raspberries, vanilla and honey. Water tames the warmth while the spiciness of oak and white pepper is still present. The finish shows medium length with tender sweet malt and honey, turning into a dry end with cocoa, oak and grape peel.
