Fruits, toffee, bit cardboardy and some off notes probably from the sample, quite nice based on the nose

There are some really nice fruit notes on this one mixed in with a parma violet confectionary note.
This nose much younger than 31 years but the palate backs the age up.
This is a fragile, delicate old Ben Nevis, the fruit at first is stewed and ever so slightly bitter but the depth of the fruit on the palate is where this picks up the points.
On the finish there is big blast of spice with some peat thrown in, not long but pretty good.
This would have been awesome at 50% abv.

    Sample supplied by hs305.

Nose; Thick caramel with sweet mustiness, and a little nutty.

Palate; Mild caramel with very soft sherry notes.

Finish; Medium, light fruity nutty caramel.

Nice light dram that would more time with.

[December, 2017]  Another fine cask out of the huge stocks of Tomintoul distillery they traded in exchange for their fine spirit a long time ago (MacKillop's Choice is a brand of the Tomintoul distillery group).  I know this is an excellent bottling as I have tasted it before but I did not take any notes - so I have to open another bottle (no. 117) to smooth out that lapse (lucky me!).  I bought it for 110 Euro in October, 2006.

Sherry casked Ben Nevis from the sixties simply is excellent if it matured for 25 to 35 years and this is another great proof of this observation.  But beware: longer maturations (40+years) often led to heavy tannins-driven astringent drams that are a love-it-or-hate-it affair.  But this one was bottled exactly at the right time - a dram to savour at christmas...

The colour is chestnutoloroso sherry and the texture shows fat tears and slow legs. The nose offers this adorable sixties Ben Nevis sherry casks profile with tons of oriental spices, nuts and dried fruits that remind of a long infused rum pot during christmas time (hey, it is christmas time!). I could sniff this for hours because of its unusual and complex profile - old style sherry maturation of the finest kind!

The taste is incredibly complex and layered too - it is fun and enjoying to explore it wave by wave. Water is not needed but does no harm either.
    • Finish
      91 91
It arrives bold and instantly coating on the palate with no distracting moments. The finish is of medium length and without any drying or bitter notes despite 32 years in a sherry cask. Really, really good and dangerously quaffable.

[October, 2006]  Together with friends I emptied a bottle that I bought for 110 Euro in September, 2006.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 92,5.  Unfortunately I took no detailed notes.
