[June, 2017] I had several drams during the Feis at Bruichladdich open day and later during a Feis Ile tasting at Bonn. To make it more interesting I did this as a head-to-head to its sister release Organic Barley (WB id 97169).

So, two very different drams: The Bere Barley is not as immature as expected but just somewhat simple and bourbon-ish. The Organic Barley comes across like a very shy early-teenager, that is still a little immature but at the brink of getting into puberty...
    • Nose
      83 83
The Organic is slightly darker (pale gold) than the Bere (pale straw). The Bere shows a few fast legs and late sticky tears while the Organic has many fast legs and small tears that later get bigger and sticky. The nose of the Bere is punchy on a vanilla and honey sweet profile with some strange cheesy notes (bavarian blue brie cheese). The nose of the Organic is very closed and shy and does not really open up on water either. So despite the cheesy notes I like the Bere a little better (everything is better than just nothing, isn't it?).
    • Taste

The Organic is quite closed here too, on some water it offers a spring floral (flowery) and spicy flavours profile. The Bere is sweet bourbon-ish and spicy (peppers). Yes, even this round wins the Bere...
    • Finish
      79 79
The mouthfeel of the Bere is slightly peppery and (just a little) coating, the Organic warming but not coating at all. Again a slight advantage for the Bere. Nothing much to say about the Bere's finish except "Where is it?". The Organic offers a finish (finally!) of medium length with a minor dryness (ashes). After adding a fair share of water some additional chocolatey flavours pop up. The last round wins the Organic by several points.

Incredibly fruity on the nose, appreciate very close to the Newmake, metallic and slightly sour in the taste, sweet without end! Would be interesting to know how much influence the barley variety has here. At least contact me.
