[May, 2017]  I had this dram during a Springbank Masterclass tasting at the Campbeltown whisky festival.

This one matured completely in a 1st fill port hogshead and was one of the official festival releases of Springbank.  While all other festival bottles sold out in less than 30 minutes (people queued up hours before already) this was still available after the festival.  Guess why? (Hint:  It was sold for 250 GBP!)

The colour is tawny and the texture shows very late slow legs and sticky tears.  The nose is very sweet, port-winey and extremely drying (old papers) as well as sour (balsamico).  It arrives in the mouth nicely coating and neither hot nor peppery but a little dry (tobacco ashes).  The taste is dominated by a delicious milk chocolate flavour but unfortunately some unpleasant bitter notes pop up (tannins).  The finish is of medium length and more sugary, but again a little drying (tobacco ashes) as was the first mouthfeel.

An interesting bottling of course, but not my favourite style of a dram (I like the recent standard 21year old better).  And it is way too expensive, as a drinker I would not pay more than 80 Euro for such a bottle...

N- Integrated scents of hot coffee cup sits on a leather coaster, floral caramel with sour milk sphere, minted chocolate, olive brine, dried shredded coconut coated on kuih lapis. Solidly spicy at hearth, drift of resin and rust with side noted of sweet herbs. Inspiring as always from Springbank. (91/22)

P- Full body red wine, semi chewy tannin with abundance of red fruits, dry with farmy notes linger around the nose. (89/22)

F- Medium, bitter chocolate, less colourful at this stage and mellow out with familiar salty coat. (86/20)

B/B- 87/21 An active smaller port cask that masked but also offered a different side of Springbank.

    Cereal- 0, Fruity- 3, Floral- 2, Peaty- 1, Feinty- 1, Sulphur- 0, Woody- 3, Winery- 3

A dram that requires a little patience.
    Enthusiasm Nose and mouth 4/5 Final 3/5 Whisky n ° 1721
    • Nose
Old dusty cellar, light peat, sweet malt. The house style is struggling to express itself. Then juicy fruits, freshness. Slow enough to open.
    • Taste
Thick texture. Chocolate. The barrel dominates widely. Berries. Well spiced. The Springbank style eventually asserts itself.
    • Finish
      Medium finish, sweet / bitter.
