Whisky Reviews for Bowmore 1998 SMWS 3.301

Not necessarily what you might expect from a Bowmore, but the sherry note is missing. But this is also an ex-Bourbon barrel maturation and that has turned out very well. Beautiful nose and exciting palate, the finish could have been a bit longer.
    • Nose
Strong Black Forest ham, straight out of the smokehouse. The smoke is subtle, it dominates the greasy seasoning. The ham is covered with a herb crust and very well salted. Dried apricots, dates and figs serve as a garnish. The ham is served on a wooden board that has just been processed.
    • Taste
On the tongue, clearly, the herb crust is in the way first, before fruity smoke and spicy ham can spread. The 18 years in the barrel are quickly noticeable as well, the woody note blending in nicely with the other aromas that have come to light in the meantime: a little honey and floral notes. The smoke wafts away, the ham remains, cinnamon-pollinated.
    • Finish
Medium long, dry, greasy, salty, dried wild flowers and cold campfire.

Nice thing! So successful fruit-and-smoke combos I've rarely seen ex-Bourbon Fassreifungen until now, but this one hits the bull's eye. On the one hand tarred ropes, machine oil, hard wax and a long list of similar masculine-maritime connotated flavors, but then on the tongue suddenly floral notes, plus peach, honeydew melon, mango and guava, as from nowhere. And best of all, it all fits together somehow perfectly, instead of getting in the way.

Oh yes: super oily, full mouth feeling on top, and easily drinkable without water, and that at 57.1% ... We are approaching 90-point fields - or are we already there?

  4. Bowmore Axel scored this whisky 92 points Expert Senior

Nose: Immediately lighter, beautiful, aromatic smoke. A bit like smoked ham. Slightly like caramel. Sweet. Phenolic, salty.

Palate: Very soft, bitter - sweet like brown sugar, dark fruit, apple and some oak. Slightly salty, mineral, phenolic. Alcohol well integrated. Despite 57.1% no water required.

Finish: wonderful note of crushed black currant leaves. Still salty metallic, brown sugar, vanilla. Some white pepper and dry citrus.

Comment: Gets better with every sip. This is a wonderful Bowmore from a very good ex-bourbon barrel that does not cover the distillery character. The next morning the empty glass has a nice scent of incense. Yummie.

    I got 92 points.

    SMWS tasting notes:

There was plenty on that barbeque, from grilled duck with hoisin, plum and ginger sauce to venison steaks and spiced smoky chicken next to creamy mussels and Galician goose barnacles. Hot, smoky, sweet and sticky on the palate like French toast with smoky bacon, berries and maple syrup as well as a burger with fried onions, frazzles and baconnaise. Water added crab cakes with a sweet chilli and ginger dipping sauce and smoked shrimps in a sweet garlic rub whilst on the taste now like listening to a very mellow melody of sweet, smoky, herbal and floral flavours.DRINKING TIP: It feels like a soothing touch
