Whisky Reviews for Arran 2009 GM

Was quite surprized when I got offered a glas of that Arran yesterday.

Besides the fact, that it's a bit dominated by vanilla, it offered a lovely mix of grassy flavors and even some hints (not much, though) of discreet farmy notes in the background, when noising it.

The strength on the palate is, that....it works well. It a very well-behaved kid. The alcohol bites only little in the beginning. The farm remains in the nose only, (unfortunately), though. But the grassy vanilla mix was to enjoy. The aromas work well together. In this case, the sum is bigger then the parts.

The whole thing is really quaffable and better then I would have expected it (Arran + youngish). This is overall a really good daily summer dram.

No need to say, that complexity plays the field somewhere else, but for what it is, it offers very good quality - again, considering what we have here. Therefore my rather higher rating of 85. It, somehow, hit my personal nerve.

This was ok actually, as I said quite a decent sipper. This was a sample courtesy of Peatbogger.
    • Nose
Some sort of vanilla extract, green apple skins, Oak wood shavings and a pencil, not the shavings just the pencil.
    • Taste
A nice woody taste to it, a little smoky as well. Dried fruit and nut mix with a pinch of spice. Quite a decent sipper.
    • Finish
A medium finish but not a memorable one. It's quite hard to figure out what's hanging around.

Not too exciting, but not like you get ripped off on price/value neither.

Not much experience with Arran. This doesn’t discourage me, but I do hope there are more exciting ones.Very nice hazelnut-caramel aroma from the empty glass.
    • Nose
Refill bourbon explains the pale color.Very light on vanilla too.Orange chocolate, a little butterscotch, bread crust, one apple and half a banana, some thistle or weeds in a field.
    • Taste
Thick and oily.Citric, again some bitter orange chocolate, sweet with a bit of fudge and some allspice.Normaly I find the spicyness of a whisky to be most noticeable on the first sip, then gradually getting milder as you go into it and getting comfortable with it. This is quite the opposite with a growing spicy precence on arrival.
    • Finish
Short of medium.Sweet, not much evolvement, rather flat, one dimentional and simple.
