    Mon Chéri

When I published my tasting notes of yet another batch of this Aberlour a’bunadh a few months ago, my friend Benny told me he had an open bottle of Batch #26 and asked me if I was interested in tasting that one as well. Do bears shit in the woods? Not much later the sample ended up on my desk. This batch was already bottled in 2009 and if you were to look for a bottle today, it would set you back some 300 EUR. I guess I’m lucky to have such dear friends who love to share. It’s the 14th a’bunadh that I try.

Dark and sweet nose on Mon Chéri bonbons, dried fruit, origine chocolate, vanilla and… err… nail polish? Blood oranges, raisins, apricots and candied peach. After a few moments of breathing it turns surprising bright, if you know what I mean. An absolutely delicious nose.

The alcohol lets itself be felt immediately, of course. I gasp for breath, yet do not feel the urge to add water. Bittersweet at first sip on grapefruit, vanilla and sultanas. Woodspices give it some warmth and a mildly drying effect. But it remains more than juicy enough to keep things interesting, although a huge bitterness lurks around the corner. Cherries kick in with a vengeance. Ah, there is the chocolate as well. Hence my association with Mon Chéri.

The finish is amazing! Long, warm without any bitterness but a candy-like sweetness. Lingers long and offers even more cherries and some cinnamon and chili peppers. Wonderful!

Yes, this is one of those stunning flavour bombs from the a’bunadh series. Thanks, Benny!

    Yi ton is not suitable.
    • Nose
Rum chocolates, sugared cherries on the Black Forest cake, Italian condensed martini, cherry brandy, snow-top hot cocoa, piccolo latte, a hint of vanilla syrup similar to Bourbon, and a strong woody aroma.
The extremely heavy alcohol is accompanied by a sweet fruity taste, which is probably a cup of Tiki in the left hand and a cup of cocoa in the right hand, which is called winter medicine.
    • Taste
Strong, very low acidity, low oily, smooth, no spicy.

Palate: Sun-baked Yeka, mint-flavored chocolate, jujube peel, dark fruit preserves, longan honey, cream, apricot kernels, slightly plasticized products, sweet ginger, vanilla, oak spice, a small amount of ground pepper, theobromine.
    • Finish
Longer, 100% cocoa, wood, vanilla, slightly fruity.

    • Nose
8,5 Słodka z nutami wiśni, ananasa oraz dębu z odrobiną cynamonu i toffi.
    • Taste
8,6 Trochę niczym dżem z wiśni z nutami ciemnej słodkiej czekolady ze szczyptą wanilii i gałki muszkatołowej.
    • Finish
8,5 Dobrej długości, ostry, ciepły z nutami jabłka, imbiru, jęczmienia, białego pieprzu oraz beczki dębowej.

Great dark color. In the glass he makes an oily impression.
I've had this batch for a long time, and so far I've just had a snack on it. Sherry Finish is currently not what I want, but this one is really delicious.
    • Nose
Room temperature: fruity sweetness, cocktail cherries, dried fruit, oak, cocoa, dark chocolate, the alcohol is noticeable, but not unpleasant.
Heated: much softer, Moncherie-praline after you bite on it (on the praline, not on the glass with the Aberlour)
    • Taste
Pleasant alcoholic sharpness, again sweet, dry / woody but not unpleasant. Clear cherry and here again the dried fruit.
Mouth-watering on alcohol strength brings a veritable explosion to the fore!
    • Finish
Persistent and sticky on the tongue. Sweet and a bit warm, no bitterness, but again very dry. A little cinnamon, but subtly in the background.

My favorite batch so far! Too bad it's long gone.

Though it has no age statement, it is released in limited run batches, each batch carrying a unique number on its label. Each batch of this whisky is blended from barrels ranging from 5 to 25 years old.

The word a`bunadh is roughly translated into English from Scottish Gaelic as "the Origin."

N: very full, chocolate (pudding) nuts, and spicy - mint
T: bitter chocolate, grapefruit, praline chocolate, creamy butter and woods
F: sugar, vanilla, spicy - mint again, rose-hip
    This whisky needs no water
Compared with batch #23 and #31

I Love the power of Aberlour! It has great taste of sherry and fruits.

This also is a powerful scotch so I don`t recommend it to new whisky

users. It is good to gain a palate that recognizes the difference

between cask strength and some that are less ABV like 40% or 43%.

  16. gralson scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
rich, sweet, peach, banana, somewhat alcohol crushes from intelligible respects but smell remains
    • Taste
characteristic "sweet-plastic" start, later true sweet - like smell
    • Finish
finish unusually long, similar to taste

  17. Lafroy scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Raisins, dried fruits, cheesecake, cherry compote, lots of vanilla, hints of citrus and slight notes of fingernail polish. It seems to be very deep and sweet. Dark chocolate is also noticeable.
    • Taste
A little sour at the beginning, with hints of citrus, deep sweetness, vanilla, roots, some dryness and prunes. Cheery in chocolate accompany the taste at all times.
    • Finish
Medium long, sweet and dry with cherry to it, hints of roots, delicate pepper and prunes.
