[May, 2017]  I had this dram during the Cadenhead 175th Anniversary tasting in Campbeltown.  This 45 years old Glenfarclas was intended as the highlight of their 175th Anniversary bottlings but unfortunately they found out that it dropped below 40% abv in the cask (so it could not be named whisky according to Scottish law).  They bottled it anyway, named it "spirit drink" and sold it for a very reasonable price at the Cadenhead shop in Campbeltown.  They did not burn up one of the just two slots Cadenhead has per year to use the original Glenfarclas name on the label (the outcome of a legal settlement) that is why it is called "Hielanman".  And of course no one from Cadenhead mentioned Glenfarclas with respect to this bottling...The colour is yellow gold and the texture shows neither legs nor tears, just a broad sticky ring at the upper end of the glass.  The nose is very complex and balanced on a honey-sweet, fruity (apricots, pears) and summer floral profile.  It arrives on the palate warming and instantly mouth-coating with a slight adstringent feeling (from tannins, no wonder after 45 years in the cask).  The taste is surprisingly fresh and powerful for a 45 year old underproof dram, and it is multi-layered.  Really enjoyable.  The finish is quite long and chewable with nice wooden flavours that do not get bitter or unpleasant.  Some drops of water open up the nose even further and add chocolatey flavours to both the taste and finish.  But do not add too much as it will flatten the dram quickly.

A very fine selection by Cadenhead and it would have been a worthy anniversary bottling.  I like it very much...

PS:  As far as I remember the abv is 38.8% - but let's wait until the photos have been added to check this.

Rather excellent dram, lovely nose, great complexity, the low ABV is no issue.

Not too tanninic and not too watery bacause the low ABV and old age. And not a typical Glenfarclas too.

Initially I was not sure about this but give it time and you will be rewarded.
    A nice aperitif.

The nose in my view has a noticeable off note, it smells like vinegar.
There is also some toffee and thankfully it improves after a few minutes with air. and the vinegar note goes.

A light sherried nose which is also floral with hints of wood varnish.

There is also a lot more going on but I cannot describe it, I am not firing all cylinders but once the initial off note went it improved massively, I like it.

Now that is delicate and yes there is something winey/vinegary that the nose suggested and there is plenty of oak but nothing too bad so a good start.
There is something slightly nutty in there and some fudge and some really nice gooseberry or plum , it is on the bitter side but it works.

There is some butter in the mix and then some sharp fruit returns, I like the zesty aspect of the profile in this.
    • Finish
      88 88
For 38.3% the finish is pretty good, remains vibrant with a hint of peat coming through at the end but you have to look for it,

The underproof is absolutely not a problem... the problem is the wood interferes too much with the positives.  But nonetheless, the nose was so great I had to score it at least an 88.
    • Nose
Honey, summer flowers, yellow plums, marzipan, copper coins, some beeswax and eucalyptus oils.  Intense and enthralling nose!
    • Taste
Very woody... this is over the hill, but then comes sweetness in the form of melons, nectar, and golden raisins.
    • Finish
Medium, the golden raisins turn into muscat wine, but the wood is relentless, leaving a slightly bitter taste and astringent feeling.

    "Whiskey" n ° 1604
    • Nose
Ripe apples and mirabelles, clove quite marked. Everything is very fragrant. Extremely alive and more and more round.
    • Taste
Sweet spices (cinnamon ...), it is creamy, velvety despite the extreme reduction due to gourmet angels. Like a note of plum with alcohol that makes the link over the entire tasting. Come out of your hiding place, lychee, I recognized you!
    • Finish
Caressing and easy. Persistent spices, beautiful overall length.
