Whisky Reviews for Kilkerran 12-year-old

36 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 85.52 points

  1. KayMeertens scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

One of the best entry-level standard bottlings on the market. It's considerably less oily than the version from 2016 (bottle code 16/326). It's much fresher and cleaner, and probably more accessible.
    • Nose
Pineapple, soft peat, apple and shortbread.
    • Taste
Pineapple, peat, shortbread, ginger, citrus and spice.
    • Finish
      Pineapple, peat, dark chocolate

  2. SAND scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

NOSE: Deep malt notes, barley juice, floral-citrusy perfume, rosehip, summer honey, lemon cake, green grapes. (89p) A few drops of water brings out a lot more sweet barley juice on the nose as well as some barnyard funk and cucumber. (90p)
TASTE: The arrival is salty, dry and mineral. On the mild palate there is quite a lot of barley; barley juice, smoked barley, a hint of very dry bacon (87-88p) A few drops of water makes the whisky oilier and sweeter. (89-90p)
FINISH: Dry, mineral, a bit austere. (87p) With a few drops of water; oilier and less dry. Grassy. (88-89p)
OVERALL: Very similar to the Springbank 10 YO. Not a beginner’s malt.
    TOTAL SCORE (89) 90 points.

    Kilkerran 12 YO, 46.0 % Vol. (Bottled 20.04.2017, Lot 17/188. 70% Bourbon, 30% Sherry Casks), tasted 15.10.2019:
NOSE: Sweet malt and lovely bourbon cask notes. Light peat/smoke, honey, rich oily notes, dried yellow/lighter fruits, hint of vanilla. Water adds marzipan and sweet almonds. (89p)
TASTE: The arrival is viscous and soft, with an almost creamy mouthfeel. On the mid palate there is some (but not very much) black pepper (wood tannins), more creaminess and some yellow dried fruits. Water makes it fruitier and reduces the black pepper. (87p, with water 88p)
FINISH: The finish is slightly peppery and slightly sweet, with dried banana, black pepper, hints of light treacle and dried citrus peel. Medium long. (85p)
OVERALL: An oily and bourbon cask dominated whisky, with a lovely nose, an oily/creamy body but a less impressive exit. TOTAL SCORE: 87 points.

[May, 2017]  I had this dram at the Kilkerran masterclass tasting during the Campbeltown Whisky Festival.  It is the second batch of 12 year old Kilkerran and compared to the first batch it is a little more woodier and less sweet.  I scored it two points lower than the first batch, but nevertheless it is a superb whisky...

    Kilkerran 12, Bottled 20.04.2017, Lot 17/188, 70% Bourbon/30% Sherry Casks, 46% ABV:

I’m going to wager a bet that this likely wasn’t a top quality batch of Kilkerran 12. Too much bitterness immediately on the palate for me without enough balance from other elements. The more Springbank and SB related products I taste the less impressed I become. I think independent bottlings from Caol Ila, Ledaig, Ballechin, and ‘99 ex-bourbon Highland Park offer more value for equal or even better quality.⁣⁣

    • Finish
Salty, slight oakiness, and quite bitter. ⁣

Less peated than Ardmore (12 yr portwood), but close to that. Very vague the "dirty" Springbank scent and a little bit of that taste, but flatter. There is also a nice sweet and a little drop. Red fruit, coffee, a little bitter, a little bit of iodine back. Does not have the easy thing about Highland Park (12 yr), is in that direction.

The colour is gold. The nose is sweet with citrus, wet wood, white fruits, dried fruits, apple jam, perfume and light smoke notes. The palate is sweet with caramel, pears, light smoke, oak and white fruits notes. The finish is long and spicy with light smoke, oak, spices, vanilla, white fruits and caramel notes. It has a very good balance. I gave 88 points.

That's a very decent standard. He has something to offer and is fun. Since you can not complain.
    • Nose
The looks fresher than a Springbank. This applies to the subtle smoke as well as the malt itself. At first, it has the same aroma as a meadow on a meadow next to a forest. Also a cooling note, reminiscent of mint. Barreled apple brandy. Immature honeydew melon. Biscuit ground with lemon. Camomile tea. Removes some fennel, juniper and frankincense.
    • Taste
The whisky does not look as fresh as it does on the nose. Nice sweetie. Goes for me in the direction of forest or blossom honey. But also sweetmeats. Now a reminder to Fanta or FaKo (FaKo = Fanta and Korn). A few herbs are also included. Some ginger. The smoke is now "darker" before me. Caked wine gum.
    • Finish
Pear dish. Some smoke. Mineral notes. It gets drier and the light spice tingles a bit.

  20. Bam scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Great standard, which I would like to buy again and again.
    • Nose
At first juicy, ripe pear, which is then blown away by a maritime touch with a hint of smoke. Malt and vanilla show up, and a few red, light fruits (strawberries, raspberries) show up, as well as some orange peel.
    • Taste
Vanilla and malt are immediately followed by citrus notes and the red berries, the smoke suddenly flashes lightly. Easy grassy. Milk chocolate.
    • Finish
The milk chocolate becomes bittersweet, in the cheeks the citrus fruits are still a little firm. Relatively long.

This was a massive disappointment after hearing so many great things about it. I haven't enjoyed it at all. At it's best it has been average. I might have got a bad batch I don't know but everyone else seems to like it.
    • Nose
      54 54
Quite a fresh breezy nose. Honey dew mellon. The peat smoke is very faint as is the orange peel. In fact everything here is faint. Not a strong nose at all. From what I heard I was expecting a genie in a bottle to pop out. This is the last dram of the bottle and I have nosed every glass and it's all the same result.Citrus and custard very much in the background.
    • Taste
      53 53
I don't mind a bit of bitterness at the end but the bitterness on this is at the beginning, it's the first thing that hits you which isn't good and it dominates the whole tasting experience. It also tastes a little sour, not a eugh! sour that is totally off putting but it is there for sure. The citrus notes like lemon come and go as do the spice, in fact it is all over the shop.
    • Finish
      48 48
Bitter to the very end like a bad divorce. Dry and a little salty on the death but more like table salt than sea salt.

One of my favorite daily drams. The taste of savory and peppery lemons features throughout. Perfect.
    • Nose
Fresh lemons, sooty and a little sealine, ginger and in the background some subdued bandages.
    • Taste
Citrus-y and gently peated, salty, fresh ginger, marshmellows.
    • Finish
Peppery,  salty and long lingering lemon confectionary.

If you are looking for a slightly smoky, maritime malt with all the attributes of its region and a certain youthful freshness (without appearing immature), you will find it here.
A nice whisky that can be enjoyed uncomplicated, but has enough facets to delve into it.
    • Nose
A fresh sea breeze followed by ripe banana peels. A little salt, some caramel and a slightly oily note that increasingly displaces the banana component towards the end. Campbeltown-typical, very maritime.
    • Taste
Also very present on the palate, the onset is strong, with oily texture.
Sweetish and tingling, some salt and a slight but noticeable smoky note, which, supplemented by a "mineral" component, becomes stronger towards the back.
    • Finish
Drying, the peat smoke note finally prevails, even if it is not really strong. Dry firewood can still be heard towards the end, the banana peel (green this time) still shimmers through. After about two to two and a half minutes, it finally fades.

Peat never wins me over, but when it's done right it speaks for itself. Kilkerran has had a work in progress for years and it shows that in the finished product. Can't wait to see some more from them!   BTW if you're into that 70's Springbank flavour... this is as close as you can affordably get!
    • Nose
The nose is soft peat, roast beef, sour malt, Sherry, wood spices, herbal note of tarragon and almost over brewed chamomile tea.
    • Taste
The palate is sweet malt, spongy fresh dried peat, heather, hints of gorse and seafood barbecue (charcoal and smoked kippers?). Interesting and big bodied, there's so much more going on than the nose leads into.
    • Finish
The finish is long and peaty, saline and roughed wood. Pearled barley cooked with bay leaf, smoke vanilla ice cream and soft smoke.

    Nose:
Sweet, grassy and fruity. There is a sweet kiwi and papaya note, quite a bit of mild exotic fruits. There is also a grass/hay/dust note which I find quite pleasing.

    Taste:
Sweet, little ginger, hint of red fruit, little peat. Quite 'Springbanky'.

    Body:
    Full and creamy

    Finish:
Medium-long length. There is more peat in the finish. It really can beat up with the Springbank 10yo. Little grassy and after that a little fruity. It fades away with touches of oak.

    Price:
Around €50,- is a bit steep for a 12yo, but hé they need to start up. For the quality it is rather a good pricing.

    Presentation:
Well certainly there hasn't been any PR department involved in here. I like this a lot though!

    Comments:
Very well. This is my first one from Glengyle and I am rather impressed!

Complex whisky for his 12 years, a lot to sort out but not my personal favourite because of the finish.
    • Nose
Light peat, bandages, cherries, fresh lemon touch, vanilla and oak.
    • Taste
Very oily, hot and peppery. Sweet and bitter. Loads of herbs coming after followed by the woody notes.
    • Finish
A lot of woody notes, bitter, astringent, lemon and salt.
