What a chameleon. Not that he needs time, but he definitely knows how to use them if you give them to him. Blind, I would probably have estimated him on the nose alone around the age of 30, so complex he is there, taste and especially the finish relativize that a little. Nevertheless, an impressive bottling with sensational price-performance ratio, only the departure here prevents a 90s rating.
    • Nose
Slight peat in the nose, some honey and yellow fruits, that's the welcome. A dense, strong nose! After a few minutes, he gets a slightly acidic top note reminiscent of the 40+ Fino Speysider of the last year, floor wax and furniture polish. An idea sour pickles or mixed pickles. If I did not know it better, I would have put it into a rum barrel, especially after the experience of today's tastings. After a long service life, the 1st-fill bourbon barrel comes into its own. Vanilla full and especially tropical fruits, even creamy on the nose. Another 15 minutes later, he amazes with a slightly sweaty sherry nose. Even with heat, the fruits remain juicy and ripe, not the slightest hint of the so often found fermentation flavors. The smoke is back in the foreground, now a lot of caramel. Despite the enormous strength also no alcoholic tickling in the nose.
    • Taste
And he delivers in the mouth! The complexity continues uninterrupted, caramel, honey, yellow porridge, delicate smoke, extremely creamy, tannins in the back and no metallic hints or anything that would indicate age. The alcohol is soft and well integrated, but naturally present, the 60% provide a good pinch of chilli.
    • Finish
The finish is relatively short, a simple finish, rather sweet, and suddenly it is gone.

[May, 2017]  I had this during the Kilkerran Masterclass tasting at the Campbeltown Whisky Festival.

The colour is pale gold and the texture shows a few fast legs and late sticky tears.  The nose is a little punchy first (due to the high abv) but after a while it offers a nice citric-grassy-honey profile.  The initial mouthfeel is warming and coating, no distracting moments.  The taste is quite sweet on both sugary and honey flavours within a firm wooden structure.  Nicely balanced, no flaws that I can find.  The medium finish is more on the wooden flavours and quite peppery, but neither bitter nor drying.  Water smoothes the dram but I like it better when neat.

Again a very nice Kilkerran, they do at great job there at Glengyle distillery!

Unreduced it reminds me of a grain at first. Giving it time to breathe really helps, so does a little water. H2O stresses the first fill bourbon, lots of sweetness, but not utterly complex. Not my favourite Kilkerran.
