Whisky Reviews for Balvenie 12-year-old

- yeah I´m a little disappointed by this cask. but only because it´s not what I meant to buy. all in all I have to admit that itś not bad at all. 84/100
a rating of 56 for a balvenie from a newbie? maybe he/she doesn´t like whisky at all! but perhaps this is a very bad cask, who knows!
indeed the nose does not deliver what you expect from a 12y single barrel balvenie. the bourbon maturation is not as obvious as normally and we miss the honeyed aromas as well as the vanilla aromas.
this one´s a little less accessible and more spirity than others. cider apples, newspapers, ink. from time to time whiffs of mirabelles and a little honey. in fact it opens the longer you leave it alone. you know what? there´s a certain sootiness in this one which is a real surprise. so, all in all this reminds me more of a hazelburn than of a balvenie. but I like hazelburn, so this is not a catastrophe at all (for myself) but I can understand that some might be disappointed by this bottle.
still not quite what we expect but the palate is more balvenie-ish than the nose. much dryer than normal, mineralic,, nutty and faint toffee. not too much going on to be honest.
medium, relatively dry.
