  1. Official tasting note

Nose: Rich sherry notes but also creamy milk chocolate, toffee sauce, plums and nectarines.

Palate: Thick and chewy sherry with toffee, raisin butter, brown sugar and coffee creams.

Finish: Chewy; hints of cloves and ground ginger along with figs, plums and treacle toffee.

[May, 2017]  I had this dram during the Cadenhead 175th Anniversary tasting in Campbeltown.

A very fine selection by Cadenhead and a worthy anniversary bottling.  The best release in that series (to me)...
    • Nose
      93 93
The colour is brown sherry and the texture shows some early slow legs and very late fat tears. The nose is all about a perfectly clean sherry profile of the old school - and not the slightest trace of sulphur or any other flaw.
    • Taste
      91 91
The taste is unbelievably layered on all these wonderful sherry flavours again but still the Caperdonich malt shines through with its nice creaminess. Quite balanced for such a sherry monster, I like that!
    • Finish
      92 92
The dram arrives in the mouth peppery and fully coating with some slight astringent moments from tannins (but much lesser than one would expect from almost 40 years in a sherry butt). The finish is long and sherry-sweet with some stronger chocolatey flavours. No bitter nor drying notes here, surprisingly. Some drops of water smoothen the dram and unlock even more aromas (e.g. milk chocolate and marzipan) - I like it that way better (but even neat it was great). And unlike many other heavily sherried drams it does not get bitter even with more water added. A superb example of an excellent "old school" sherry maturation...

Wow, one of the best I ever had. He perfects a distillery, which in itself I feel as one of the 3 best of all time, the age is perfectly matched, everything went together 100%.
    • Nose
Super greasy broth, hazelnut, chestnut liqueur, deep and dark, sweet licorice, burnt creme brulee, dark honey, nougat everywhere, cream, old leather rubbed in oil, milk chocolate, behind all the Caper fruits, mushy banana and papaya, honeydew melon, pomegranate , Grapefruit, raisins and camphor, lavender and saffron, cardamom and ginger
    • Taste
Dark honey, toffee, creme brulee, honeydew melon and netted melon, whole baked apple, sweet licorice, milk chocolate, raisins and camphor, lavender, ginger, fennel, licorice and rose water, noble fresh cocoa beans, cinnamon and gingerbread, saffron and papaya, old leather, distributed everywhere
    • Finish
Remains forever, which is a big part of the rating, all the herbs, the licorice, cocoa and gingerbread, dark, sweet malt and sweet tobacco and much more, overall a little drier with more tannins

This is fantastic! Much better than the Caperdonich 1977 35 year old, and that one was already quite good. There is no bitterness here, and it’s very well balanced. A lovely winterdram with lots of layers. And one to enjoy for a long time while sitting by the fire.
    • Nose
Yup, a sherry bomb indeed! A mixture of dried fruits and forest fruits, like raisins, blueberries and blackberries. Some wax, a hint of oak and leather. Very restrained at first though. But after giving it a bit more time this gets better. Then ginger bread. Dark chocolate and a tiny hint of citrus.
    • Taste
A very thick mouthfeel, quite creamy too. Sweet fruits and honey! Strawberries, cherries, blueberries and blacberries again. Ending with tobacco and sweet winter spices; aniseed, ginger, cinnamon, a touch of black pepper and cloves. So very nice! Later dark chocolate too. Quite delicious and maybe even a bit better than the nose.
    • Finish
LONG! With chocolate and the above mentioned spices.

Dark sherry at its best! Multi-layered and extremely intense, tart and fruity at the same time.
The barrel did a great job during its long maturation period and shaped the caper donut into an incredibly intense and characterful malt!

    23/23/23/23 (92P)
    • Nose
Dark, almost rust-brown amber rests cloudy in the glass. On the glass wall of my Premium Snifter there is a viscous streak from which oily "legs" are released in slow motion. Dark and intense sherry aroma rises powerfully, wet leather and spicy tobacco appear immediately, hints of furniture polish and caramelized sugar follow. Old hazelnuts mix well with creamy milk chocolate, viscous forest honey with cocoa and a pinch of cinnamon, grapefruit and old mint come out of spicy oak and sweet raisins. The nose is incredibly complex and intense, plums and blackberries end in hints of sour cherries and zest from orange peel. There are minimally sweet tropical fruits, but these are quickly covered with "rich" sherry aromas.
    • Taste
The first sip wets the tongue bitter and spicy. Caramelized sugar and sweet raisins, dates and sour cherries, tobacco and leather, dark chocolate and a few drops of warm espresso with hints of citrus fruits in the form of grapefruit
followed by mint and chewed hazelnuts. Malty, sweet, fruity, minimally tart and peppery on the tongue followed by sweet raisins and creamy milk chocolate ... This caper donut tastes the full range of a wonderfully aromatic dark sherry bomb.
    • Finish
Leather and tobacco stick slightly tart in combination with dark wood tones on the palate, espresso and grapefruit exude their bitter aroma, hints of furniture polish and spices. Chocolate and caramel blend creamy, slightly menthol freshness sticks refreshingly on the palate, followed by hazelnuts and wet leather. The aftertaste never seems to fade away and turns up again ...

An extremely tasty droplet. It combines the typical fruity sherry flavors with a lot of age. But that is certainly not for wood allergy sufferers. With age, however, the wood tones have more substance and elegance.
    • Nose
It definitely has more sherry than the WID: 21006. That’s no surprise, of course, with the color. Wild berries. Figs. Plum jam. Chocolate grape nut. Some citrus fruits. The oak is also noticeable. But you can tell it's age compared to younger sherry bombs. That brings the typical notes across in a much less excited and sedate manner.
    • Taste
In the mouth the typical red fruits again (see nose). But they get more and more sour over time. Sour cherry. Then blood orange. The oak is now much more present than on the nose. It's getting drier. Coffee and dark chocolate.
    • Finish
      Some fruit. Tobacco. Cocoa. Liquorice.

A very sherried Caper which is pretty different to the fruit bombs from the 1972's - good on it's own even so not as expected
    • Nose
Intense, sherry, fresh rubber, berries, raisins, more dried fruits, little citric, chocolate, toffee - great!
    • Taste
Very punchy, more milk chocolate and toffee, dried fruits again, subtle sweetness balanced with good sherry wood, hints of old books, spices, nutmeg - very good!
    • Finish
Long and burning, more dark chocolate and a bit minty in the end

  10. KayMeertens scored this whisky 92 points Connoisseur

A darker, more sherry-led profile than the 2013 edition (43344) which has more of a polished and candied style.
    Samples available.
    • Nose
      Date, raisin, cherry and melon.
    • Taste
Date, raisin, mocha, cherry, melon and a little cheese, but also that candy (wine gum / marshmallow) in the back which keeps it far from the over-aged category.
    • Finish
Raisin, date and beautiful dark chocolate.
