Smells and tastes like a lot of virgin oak casks were used, at least in the (unspecified) batch my sample is from.
    • Nose
      82 82
Honey, a hint of glue, wood and spice, fresh apples and pears, earthy smoke, lots of vanilla.
    • Taste

Oak, vanilla, apples, pears, some honey, heather. I really think there's a high proportion of virgin oak in the mix.

More of the same. A bit bitter.

      Not bad but not good.

One of my favorite entry level whiskies from any distillery. A close second to the Springbank 10 IMHO. An honest distillate forward dram that works beautifully even at 40%. Great balance of spirit and wood, with Highland Park DNA on full display, heather, honey, some dried fruit, wood spice, and a nice mild dose of peat. The only Scottish malt I buy when in Canada.

    • Nose
immediately that lovely sweet heather peat of a highland park. Nuts, honey, soft smoky, citrus, light sulfur, orange and something that reminds me of new make spirit.
    • Taste
the nose is the most beautiful of the whisky because here it falls a bit dead. It is a bit flat. Has light honey, is not as smoky as the nose suggests, the sulfur is flattened even more. A pity actually ... bottling at 46% would probably do a small miracle with the taste.
    • Finish
short. Citrus, sweet caramel, a little malt, suddenly a little revival of a trace of smoke. And then the taste slowly dies.

This should probably become the new entry level HP, since the current batches of the 12yo are not good at all anymore (based on a current 5cl mini I tried recently). You shouldn't expect much from this one, but it's fairly priced for what it is.
    • Nose
Faintly smoky, faintly honeyed, faintly saline, and faintly leathery. I think the 15yo mini from 2007 I nosed a day before had a much nicer bouquet. The leather and salt together make a note like an old leather backpack that's been scavenged from the sea.
    • Taste
Somewhat peaty and a bit metallic. The feel of it on the tongue is surprisingly firm and full, with a lot of honey and peat, and some tar candy in the back. The profile is cleaner than that of the current 12yo, and as such better. With a little bit of water I get some Marabou milk chocolate.
    • Finish
The finish is just like the taste apart from some touches of menthol. It fades away quickly.

Immediately after pouring out honey and orange, hardly any peat. Salty and herbal notes come with a little oxygen.
First sweet in the mouth then strong spicy.
Despite 40% vol. pushes the malt properly and lasts a long time.
    Wow, what a pleasant surprise.

I went through a few bottles of this six years ago from the old livery and found them a decent budget option. Nose - light peat and honey, but all very light with little jumping out at me. On the palette, you get those trademark HP notes of heather, honey and light peat. It’s all very clear and straight as an arrow, with minimal sherry influence. The finish has some surprising heft of dry smoke and sweet honey. I have to say I am enjoying this more than a recent bottle I had of HP12, which I found very discordant (perhaps a bad batch?) in its sherry/peat mix. It’s a shame this 10yo is only bottled at 40% abv, though it certainly punches above its weight a bit. For a budget single malt, you could do a lot worse than this. Frankly between this bottle and the rather enjoyable Magnus, Highland Park is doing a fine job of putting solid budget options on the market. Well done!

    Highland park 10 Viking Scars,

First, let's talk about trivial things. You don't look like anything with your excessively stylized bottle and your Nordic legends to sleep upright. In addition, I deplore your famine titling which prevents you from expressing yourself completely. For a Viking, you will admit that it does not give a damn.
Now let's talk about those scars that you display. Ok ... ok ... it's not bad. At the price you cost me (30 €), I cannot complain. A light peat, honey, lemon, some fruits ... mouais, a good entry level for the kings of merchandising.

Extremely simple, pleasant, with the aroma of honey, haze and baked apples, the taste is barely sweet, very soft, with hints of caramel, vanilla and slightly smoked dried fruit, the finish is delicate, short, fruity-malt with a bit of haze.
Some kind of "girlish" release, too soft and unprepossessing, although not completely devoid of the HP profile. But I would say no rather than yes.

  31. 2ndSip scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

clearly fruity in the nose than in the taste. A good 10-year-old beginner or EveryDayDram without being overwhelmed. [A banana aroma surprises me in the nose, but still fits harmoniously into the overall picture. Interesting that the taste and the finish differ more].
    • Nose
      84 84
initially fruity (apple and ripe banana) and a certain citrus freshness as well as honey and vanilla. Then very light smoke that slips into the background the longer he breathes. The fruity components are then becoming increasingly clear. Every now and then an alcohol bite comes through, along with a floral note that I would locate in the typical HP heather.
If you leave a dram covered in the glass for longer (e.g. one hour), the heather gets through very well with a fresh floral note. The fruit (banana) is also more evident. [That gives me another upgrade in the aroma of 80 -> 84 points]
    • Taste
      82 82
first a very soft taste, then a light spice comes along. It becomes creamy and oily. Vanilla and honey are clearer, the fruit components are no longer so pronounced, even if they are still recognizable. Very light smoke out the back.
Even softer on the second dip, but still has enough power.
    • Finish
      80 80
medium to long finish. Oak flavors and a slight bitterness of coffee (dark chocolate / strong coffee) remain in the mouth. A spicy smoke is also on the tongue for a very long time - but this depends on the shape of the day. Sometimes you can feel this smoke in the outlet, sometimes it's not so present.

Color: light gold, not painted. The body is not very dense, rather watery.
Nose: quite interesting, impressive for a ten year old and not as emasculated as a 12 year old HP. First of all, sweet motifs stand out very well here, for which dried fruits (raisins, dried apricots, prunes), baked apples and pears, canned peaches, cream, vanilla, caramel and toffee, milk chocolate, heather honey are responsible (here it does not open up so much , as in 12-ke). A smoky medical theme passes through these sweets in a distinct wave: a little peat, sea salt, algae, gauze bandages, iodine, pine resin. After the glass stands and is saturated with oxygen, acidity appears in the following features: cranberry-cowberry juice, cherry juice, orange or tangerine pulp. Finally, bitter-spicy nuances of walnuts and pine nuts, ground black pepper and ginger can be distinguished.
Taste: not as substantial as the aroma, but quite mild, even slightly watery. It seems that in its tenderness it even surpasses Speyside's classic Balvenie 12. Initially sweet, citrus-honey, yellow apples, vanilla, cream, a bit of dried fruit; then a bitter wave of pepper, partitions of walnuts, ink and herbal motifs, flavored with a light smoke of burnt trees.
Finish: medium length, intense and pleasant. Burnt wood, apple seeds, ginger, overripe plum.

  33. Pyromann scored this whisky 75 points Expert Senior

This whisky offers both sweetness, sweetness and a little overripe fruit in aroma and taste. Compared to the older 12y version, which offered something from everything, this paradoxically seems like trying to please as many customers as possible. I liked the older 12y bottling more.

Whisky spent 10 years in sherry oloroso barrels before it was poured into bottles. About 10% of the content is distillates, which matured in barrels of the first filling. It is a slightly peat whisky containing about 20 PPM phenols. Interestingly, it comes in two versions with 40% and 43% power.

Fresh and bright Highland Park. Good and solid 10 year old, but nothing spectacular. Bottle seems to improve as it sits. Review on the last third of a bottle open for +6 months.
    • Nose

Peaty sea breeze, zest of lemon, lime and orange, mild smoke - maybe from burning driftwood. Even some farmy smells in the background. Quite pleasant.
    • Taste
      83 83
Sour and sweet, again citrus fruit, something slightly nutty, green grass, slightly peaty, slighty peppery
    • Finish

Quite short on peat, hay, grass and some pepper

  44. Stanzeflasche scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

On the nose, the smoky peat envelops you. It is refreshed by vanilla, lemon peels. And orange, one has the impression of biting into the fruit. Over time, the smoke gets stronger and stronger. Vanilla is intense in the mouth, and marries voluptuously with peat. Citrus fruits spice it up. Behind, we smell some hay, something country. The finish lacks a bit of length, but it is good, still vanilla, with a lemon zest, and the malt which regains its rights.

The nose of a peat and a pine, possibly some hay. The taste is complex and charming. Much less expression than in 12, much less cigar, though it doesn't make this drink inferior. The peat is soft and pleasant but not subtle, the citric note goes more to an orange.

Nose: Light smoke. Hint of new make but in a nice way. Mild toffee and heather honey. Highland Park allright, but a little light.
Mouth: Fits the nose. Sweet and honeyed at first. Then a light spicy kick. Even some hint of dried fruits and fresh white fruits like honey melon. Slight smoke and bitterness towards the end.
Finish: Rather short. A little spiciness lingers on for a short while.  Then some bitter notes that are neither pleasant nor unpleasant.
All in all a rather acceptable entry malt, but nothing you will remember for long. I will properly use this to warm up my taste buds for more challenging and interesting malts.

Made predominantly from European oak topped up with US barrels, 40% of which is virgin oak - all sherry seasoned.

N: A gentle, well rounded nose with a little peat smoke (the current 12yo is only a mere 3ppm). Nice recipe.
T: Soft virgin oak - so a young tempered dram but still with some immaturity.
F: Feathery-soft heathery finish, sweet saline. Again, the recipe rings true.
C: Another entry level age statement HP destined for international markets. Depending on the price differential however, you may be better off jumping straight to the 12yo. The last HP 12yo i had improved significantly in the bottle over time, so there’s a fair chance this would also.Scores a C[-]
