What a great nose, you can almost dream. Very complex and interesting. Too bad that then only so (relatively and in proportion) lukewarm finish is in it.
    • Nose
      92 92
First, toffee sweets and a hint of camembert (rarely, that I have a soft cheese in a whisky - pleasant, not irritating), before notes of fresh peaches and ripe bananas set. Slightly mineral. Salty and with a touch of sea air (from the sea side). Now the wind is turning, coming from the east, over the land; wanders over a wildflower field, takes the scent and carries it in the nose. A thick buttered dish, honey on top. Barley, malt, caramelized sugar. And as a basis then again and again this note of a saltwater-wet stone.
    • Taste
      89 89
Sweet peach and apricot pieces, garnished with a leaf of basil, oregano, thyme. Slightly peppered. The sea is also to be found on the tongue, although the spicy fruit notes indicate the direction and lead. At the beginning slightly oily, it becomes drier in the course. Woody notes come in, bring along leather and fresh tobacco leaves. Chocolate notes, marzipan, vanilla kipper, honey. The oak flavor remains "bright" and will not become dominant later.
    • Finish
      87 87
Slightly dry with peach and apricot, a good dash of honey, leather and marzipan. Goodbye to the tongue relatively quickly, leaving a trail of fruit and salt.

Dark, almost brown color. Oily whisky.
    • Nose
      92 92
Elegant, round, pleasant. Pretty sweet. Red and dark berries. Blueberries, blueberries, maybe some cranberries. Tropical fruit. Subtle leather notes. Traces of vanilla and citrus. Very soft notes of smoke. A bit of caramel. Delicate orchard fruit aromas. Sea salt. A pinch of spices. Light spice.
    • Taste
      89 89
Spice. Leather notes. Dark berries. Blueberries and blueberries. Sea salt. Salty caramel. Traces of citrus. The fruit of the orchard. Apples and pears in ash. Sometimes sour notes pierce. Light spice. A pinch of spices. White pepper. With the second sip, he is smoother and more composed. Feel more elegance and balance. Dark berries appear. Blueberries and blueberries, but less sweet.
    • Finish
      88 88
Ash. Leather notes. Salty caramel. Lots of salt. Delicate spice. White pepper. The sweetness of caramel. Bitterness. A bit of a barrel. Quite a long finish. The second sip was dark dark chocolate and some dark berries. Blueberries, but less sweet.

  7. Totoro scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Pretty good, but I pferer the 18-year-old. This, while still delicious, feels to me more slapdash and confused by the cask mix.
Also, the 46 percent feel a bit underpowered here.
    • Nose
      87 87
Mineral, oily, greasy, smoky, more influenced by port than by sherry. Brown sugar, oily rags, exhaust fumes, raspberry jam, and indeed a touch of rum. Somehow the different casks reduce rather than amplify Springbank's inherent complexity. There's plenty of potential, but it remains curiously shy for a 21-year-old SB.
    • Taste
      88 88
Starts sweet, gets then punchier and spicier, then the smoke wells up, then it's back to honey and fruits. The trademark SB tartness and minerality is dialed back (or covered up) on the palate as the fortified-wine and rum casks take prominence. Nicely oily texture; mouth-coating and sticky.
    • Finish
      87 87
Honeyed, saline, and herbal, with cherry, leather, camphor, licorice, boozy rum, and a touch of industrial / workshop greasiness. Not overly long, though (after a couple of moments, all that's left is the smoke), with a slightly diluted feel.

The tropical fruit is fantastic, the finish is a bit too woody for me.
    • Nose
      91 91
Liquid raisins and forest honey, caramel, plum syrup, set oak with lots of spicy cinnamon, apple, dried dates and cherries, banana chips, oily with salt and orange, vanilla, apricot and mango, a touch of earthy dark chocolate, marzipan with a little orange peel, pear, Nectarine, carnation
    • Taste
      89 89
Blossom honey and barley malt, bitter orange and spicy cinnamon, aromatic oak with slightly tart notes, banana, raisins and dried apricots, salt and earthy espresso, leather, dry cocoa powder, ground cloves and traces of pepper, mineral tones, hazelnuts and walnuts, prunes and cherries, Sandalwood, tobacco, pine resin
    • Finish
      87 87
dirty and earthy with lots of cocoa, salt, old oak with tingling spice, cinnamon and clove, vanilla, marzipan, banana, some blossom honey, apricot, leather, tobacco, orange, pepper, hazelnut and walnut

  12. SAND scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

NOSE: Fruity, light rum, banana, coconut, sea buckthorn, marsipan, pineapple, oranges, rose water, fennel. Lovely fruity complexity (91p).
TASTE: Fruity, sweet, malty, tropical fruits, sweetness, candied orange peel, quite complex (90-91p).
FINISH: Fruity, mild fruit stone bitterness. (89p).
OVERALL: A sweet and very fruity senior Springbank. Total score 90 (91) points.

  13. OJK scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Exotic fruits on the nose, with some funky bread and cheese notes. Some acrid spice on the palate with the exotic fruits still coming through, mainly on banana and coconut.

  14. Gregers scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

A decent dram, but no bells or whistles, and most of the time it felt like all those different cask types were cancelling each other's flavours out instead of creating a more complex experience.

Different nose for sure. Sherry notes with dried fruits, leather, light marzipan, furniture polish, then overripe banana, toffee, very light bubblegum, hay, a bit of honey, and vanilla. Interesting, and even better after tasting.
    • Taste
      84 84
Alcohol feels light, light pepper, nice and warm, but the lack of sweetness is surprising. Light carrot juice sweetness only, then comes oak, leather, dried herbs, some barley, freshly cut grass. Second chew brings a bit more leather, tobacco leaves, and very light smoke. Sweetness still very low. Third chew finally brings a little bit of cane sugar on top of the carrot juice, some custard, and a very little bit of marshmallows. Not a lot of other stuff going on, which is surprising considering that it was matured in 4 different casks. Maybe all were 2nd or 3rd fill? Definitely the result is not very exciting.
    • Finish
      85 85
Very light peppers, decent amount of oak, tobacco leaves, light smoke, very ripe banana peel. Light, but not bad.

  15. whisky_garage scored this whisky 90 points Expert Junior

Aroma: Restrained, intense, multifaceted. The first wave is branded, industrial notes. Locksmith, oiled rags, carpentry shop. Wood heated by friction, light minerality. Citrus fruits, butter biscuits, some dried fruits, berry shades, vanilla, banana. Spices, noble tobacco, milk chocolate, delicate wood.

Taste: Rich, silky, sweetish. Ripe apricots and peaches, some dried fruits, light creaminess. An industrial theme, subtle minerality, noble tobacco, spices, the most delicate barrel.

Finish: Long lasting, silky. Vanilla, some dried fruit, oiled rags, a light sillage of milk chocolate, a barrel.

Conclusion: Restrained, but at the same time very rich, silky, rich in shades and undertones of whisky, with excellent balance. The interaction of barrels with alcohols is at the highest level. With each new sample, I fall more and more in love with Springbank, may my wife forgive me????????????.

    • Finish
Medium length, peach peel oil, ripe grains.

A really good malt. With that one has to deal a little longer, then he shows what he can. However, the price is already very ambitious.
    • Nose
Caramel. Then immediately such a mineral and earthy note. Forest floor. Also herbs. Fresh banana peel. Immediately after pouring relatively little fruit. After a few minutes, but then comes a lot more. Apricot dumplings. Cloudberry jam. Sugar candy. Sweet, malty notes. The smoke is very subtle and mingles with the dirty Springbank notes.
    • Taste
Agave nectar. Also something like the juice of Dosenlitschis. Some rose water. Then a nice tingle that reminds me of lemon shower sticks. Now comes orange marmalade. And a nice spice. Gradually it gets smokier.
    • Finish
The smoke is less strong than expected in the finish. Grapefruit. A touch of China bark. Leather and tobacco.

Leather and tobacco equal, spicy, cinnamon. Also ripe banana. Soft smell, no strong alcohol influence. Smoke of smoke, also somewhat floral.
    • Taste
Soft, full, creamy. Leather, tobacco, some buttery too. Something fruity too, orange.
    • Finish
Soft, hint of smoke, tobacco. Reasonably long. Wood tones. Some honey, now also becomes very lightly stimulating and spicy, cinnamon also. Tobacco and wood still hang over time.

Very complex dram where you have to sit down quietly.
    • Nose
A touch of smoke, but not predominant. Fruit. Banana, pineapple.
    • Taste
The smoke distributes itself over the tongue so that it is always present, but never dominating. Again the fruity notes of banana and other tropical fruit.
    • Finish
Long finish, partly due to the bed of smoke, but also a bit of bitter behind on the tongue.

[May, 2017]  I had this dram during a Springbank Masterclass tasting at the Campbeltown whisky festival.

The nose is very complex on malty, fruity (banana) and demara sugary sweet aromas.  Some hints of floral notes and rum too.  The mouthfeel is smooth and a little peppery.  The taste is quite complex again but not rich or bold.  Additional leathery and tobacco notes here.  The finish is of medium length with spicy aromas (pepper, vanilla, cinnamon).  With water the whole dram gets sweeter and even more mellow, and the finish stays a little longer that way.  So I like it best with some (not too much) drops of water.

A very fine dram indeed and much better than the 21year old festival edition (for my taste) - but way to pricey.  As a drinker I would not pay more than 100 Euro for such a bottle...
