Again, a young malt with good quality.
    • Nose
      Elegant peat, clean and buttery.
    • Taste
Very sweet, canned peaches, very fruity.
    • Finish
      Short, dusty and milky peat.

N- As each batch are unique, that's no way to expect that every new batch release are the same or to beat the previous one. Different vintages with different flavour profile that suit different palate. So this 2016 bottled The Peated opened up well with packed compote of vanilla and citrus honey. Then the after-burnt hay with smoky bamboo nuance kicks in, get quite grassy with stiff eucalyptus derived from strength. Some nice varnish that evolved to thin rustiness that reminiscent to lychee ice cream, caramel coconut and chocolate.

P- Masculine, frizzy sweet vanilla soda and salted grapefruit. Not quite as striking as 2015. Rounder and smoother, and probably more people will like it this wayF- Medium-long, smooth for a young dram, peppery, decently sweet and spicy. Pretty generic overall, as palate and finish not quite able to catch up with the fine aroma.

An example of balance, greedy. I really appreciated, a notch above the 2011, a notch below the 2015. Bravo Ichiro Akuto If it had to be given a subjective note it would be a 90
    • Nose
A beautiful bright gold dress is the most beautiful of all, what brilliance! This peat-sweet-cereal nose, very pastry, whipped cream, candied lemon, a scent that reminds me of khaki, pear nashi, a sweet varnish. I am really committed!
    • Taste
What an appetizer! Chilli pepper, very full, earthy and smoky mille-feuilles, a beautiful sweet-salted peat moss, lemon, persimmon and salty licorice close the march.
    • Finish
It's long, really long. On liquorice, fern, a certain marine sensation, around salt.

N: Smoked Shreddies/All-Bran, soft herbal wasabi and sweetcorn. Clearly not Scottish.
T: Zooms in [Nick] with beautiful barley moving swiftly to a smoke complex – charcoal-y, camp fire smoke, nutty smoke, roasted chestnut smoke. Super full bodied and broad. Sooty and salty.
F: One marshmallow and some confectionary candy. The smoke now clean and firm.
    C: A cracking 3yo that comes at a price [£120 Oct ’17].Scores a B[-]

There’s a lot of excitement and hype surrounding Chichibu and consequently most bottles are extremely hard to find, some selling out before they’ve even moved far from the distillery. Fortunately, The Peated 2016 is a little easier to obtain for those outside of Japan – and that’s a good thing as it’s a lovely young whisky which, whilst still quite fiery, has some incredible qualities that only make me more excited for future releases from Chichibu.

    • Nose
Peat and err…meat. Smoke is immediately obvious and is both medicinal (TCP, iodine, tinctures etc.) as well as quite meaty (ham, bouillon and broth). There’s still some liveliness here from apple and lemon peels, vanilla and a gentle touch of berry sweetness. Vegetal and pine notes are supported by mild aromas of baked goods all making for a pleasant but smoky start to proceedings.
    • Taste
Quite the journey. Initial candy sweetness and alcohol on the lips, then moving steadily into ashy smoke and sweet barley. A very progressive development moves quickly through toffee into citrus and ends with a nutty umami flavour. A fascinating and ever evolving experience. The peat is present throughout, sharp, semi-sweet and medicinal in nature, but never truly overpowering, there’s more than enough ‘non-peat’ flavour here to back things up.
    • Finish
Long and evolving into the dying embers of a wood fire. Slight astringency leaves the mouth dry, but salivating for more.

    Tasting of
    Chichibu The Peated 2012 - 2016. 54.5% 6350 bottles.
It will be noticed that the number of bottles increases with each edition.
No indication Cask Strength on the bottle, unlike 2015. The LMDW team was not able to tell me whether or not this Peated was reduced. (I think so)
Served twice, here is my feeling.
