(Bought march 2020. Bottle code 1741915 L508:3018074) Tasted 01.04.2020.
APPEARANCE: Medium gold / deep white wine colour. Much lighter than the Deanston 12 YO. Quite viscous, noticeable long, slim legs on the side of the glass.
NOSE: Much purer bourbon notes than the 12 YO; quite a bit of dried and fresh banana, vanilla, dried coconut, sweet wood and something solventy, direction nail polish remover. A perfumed note, almost soapy. A few drops of water transforms the soapy to fresh tropical fruits; mango, guava, papaya, cantaloupe. I think this has only been bourbon cask matured (86-88p without, 88-89 with water)
TASTE: The arrival is a little lighter than the 12, but the taste is long. On the mid palate there are a number of orchard fruits, sweet barley juice and summer honey, but it is all rather “dry” and come in a mineral, slightly austere wrapping. Fascinating. Benefits from (a lot of) time in the glass. With a few drops of water it becomes sweeter and the sweet barley juice more pronounced. (87-88p)
FINISH: The exit is mineral, again with fresh engine oil, steel and some white pepper. In the aftertaste the white pepper becomes more prominent. A few drops of water doesn’t change much. (86p)
OVERALL: Deanston has made a textbook bourbon matured malt and wrapped it in a thin, see through mineral austerity wrapping. Needs time. Fascinating. TOTAL SCORE: 87 points.
