This whisky was in my burning glass from the start and yet it never turned out to be tested. I would like to thank André all the more today for the great rehearsal. A warm greeting goes to the whisky archive in Schleusingen.
    • Nose
Creamy vanilla cake with ripe peaches. Then immediately charcoal fire with an ashy accent. He definitely needs water. It balances through the nose with fruitiness and mineral notes. Here and there a fresh pineapple with a touch of all kinds of spices. Everything always stays on the bright and lovely side. Special nose!
    • Taste
There's a lot going on on the palate. With a full body, delicious and strong, he serves salty shortbread biscuits with a strong malt taste. Almost like dark beer. There are also almond cream biscuits with ripe orange and young apple. Then there is a hint of licorice in colorful candy. In the transition even a bit nutty together with the oak and again these delicate liquorice notes. Then very stimulating for saliva. It always looks deliciously sweet and fruity. A masterpiece. Unicorn palate.
    • Finish
Delicately melting transition to the finale, spicy and warming. Very masculine finish with woody notes. Spices and herbs are goodbye to say goodbye. Respect to the master. A malt with recognition value. Gladly an 88.

The recommendation is to add a little, but not too much (!) water
    • Nose
      86 86
Light, floral, light fruity, vanilla, citrus, hay, behind it a little heavy men's perfume. The almost 60% hide well. All in all a little fleeting.
Water brings out more spice and more of the perfume note. Wins by doing this.
However, if you take too much water, it turns back to citrus candy on one side.
    • Taste
      84 84
The abv is noticeable on the palate. Sweet at the beginning, then very spicy. Mouth watering, but undiluted a little too much punch. Citrus fruits dominate, also a little zest. Very slightly mineral. With water more play of aromas, more accessible. Typical longer bourbon barrel aging with a characteristic distillate. Pleasant dryness.
Sweet with lots of water and a bit grassy. Dryness is gone, but it also drives away the spices.
    • Finish
      83 83
Pleasant finish with vanilla, slightly dry, citrus zest and pomelo. warming.

Smell: sea breeze herbs, then fresh fruit, mainly citrus and peach.

Taste: I thought it would burn, but it didn't. Very smooth, creamy caramel chocolate. After a short while, the sweetness starts to rise exponentially, the kind of fruity drinks in cartons sold in supermarkets. A little spice, then a little smoky.

Ending rhyme: Sweet and sour fruits and black pepper chocolate and the like, these flavors do not conflict when mixed together. Actually, it is quite shocking to my cognition, but I really feel it, and the whole ending rhyme is very long.

The level is very good, the complexity is very high, and there is almost no slap in the face, so what else?

    Nose: floral, bit of oranges,
Taste is heavy on the alcohol (59.8%)

Added 2 drops of water and the smell OMG caramel/toffee, oranges and oak.
The taste honey/caramel and vanilla and with 2 drops of water still a little bite/heavy on the alcohol

    • Taste

Several times tasted from a on 1.8. freshly uncorked bottle. Very interesting development, very complex.
You need a lot of time, at first a lot, later less water and patience.
Great nose at the beginning, but extreme peppery spice. After just under four months, the wort has been clearly tamed and the complexity is very nice and creamy, see detailed notes.
A real pleasure from start to finish. A specialty for which you should take your time.
    • Nose
      95 95
Ripe tropical fruits (mango, coconut), clear vanilla and multi-layered sweetness, lots of citrus and orangeade, hints of marzipan or spicy Christmas biscuits, as well as nut aromas - very inspiring
    • Taste
      94 94
At around 52%, oak, peppery spice and creamy sweetness are in a very nice balance. Multi-layered aromas, every sip gives new impressions for the palate, similar to what the nose felt before
    • Finish
      94 94
long-lasting, becoming drier, nice combination of peppery flavor with maltiness, vanilla, citrus and maritime freshness

Appearance: Pale golden, not quite as pale as straw. Nicely viscous.

Nose: Pineapple, lemon, vanilla, caramel, honey. Oak. Barley sugar.

Palate: Sweet caramel, honey, vanilla, bit of smoke. Getting some dried apricots. Touch of pineapple.

Finish: Hot booze. Needs water. Peppery, some smoke.

With Water: Needs a lot. Softer.

Overall: Nonpeated? A bit smoky though. Lots of honey, caramel, vanilla, barley sugar. Quite nice. Hard to get the right amount of water in there.

A really enjoyable complex dram. An Islay that really shows a lot of Caol Ila character even without the peat there. It delivers on all fronts. Give it some time and you'll be richly rewarded.
    • Nose

Biscuits, ripe banana, dry wood, salty caramel, some oatmeal too. Some slight eathyness. For a second I got some fresh crisp green apples. I can keep smelling this for a while and it keeps on giving.
    • Taste
      87 87
Lovely fat oily texture. Much more spice on the palate than on the nose. Very nice peper, not overly sharp. But also still fruity. The bananas are still there. Is that a hint of mango there?
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium-long finish with a pleasent mixture of fruits and spices. That bisquity / oaty note from the nose is coming back, as is some of the caramel.

Great whisky! You wouldn't think it's a Caol Ila, it's delicate, refined and enjoyable.
    • Nose
The nose is floral, soft and velvety, with notes of powdered sugar, vanilla and tea leaves, the alcohol stings slightly.
    • Taste
On the palate it is sweet, powerful, peppery and buttery, definitely full of butter. With water it softens and becomes creamier

At first glance, a simple malt, but this is not at all the case) water and time definitely help in revealing. Branded salt is very finely present in the aroma, but breaks only with aeration. With different amounts of water, it plays differently. For myself, I determined three drops per drum, it helps in disclosure, it’s bigger / easier, it’s easy to drown. Not any frivolity in aroma and naughty notes on an empty glass. Alcohol is very well integrated; there is no alcoholism.
A very underrated molt, really liked, in my bar be????????
    • Nose
without water, quite enclosed. Three drops reveals this dram.
Baking, oatmeal cookies, Tofi, vanilla, ripe red apples, special salt breaks through a light background.
    • Taste
bright and powerful, medium sweet, buttery even with water. White pepper and spicy herbs dominant, then a sweet apple, apricots and pastries. At the end, metal motifs.
    • Finish
long, longer than average. Pleasant astringency of oak, salted nuts, lime and metallic notes. Burnt match heads. Peat? ????

Caol Ila without peat - can that work? To fully enjoy this 18-year-old 'Unpeated Style', you need 3 things: time, water and perseverance. Vibrant and dense, the nose features pastries, lime juice and fresh sea air with a salty-mineral edge. With water, sour and biscuity notes intensify. On the palate, the complex flavor profile continues with apricots, white pepper and herbal spiciness. Full-bodied, oily and slightly dry, the medium finish fades with crisp lemons, salted nuts and a touch of menthol. An extremely rewarding Islay malt, despite its lack of peat.

Here's a 'Special Release', still widely available currently two years on.

N: This is a 'large’ dram as the abv would imply. The big cask influence helps bring a tutti & dry fruity concoction with lots of vanilla.
T: With a pleasing arrival, we’ve more of the same on the palate. Add water for a more flowing, fruity vanilla bouquet and sustained travel.
F: Turns towards firm >sharpish & tannic fruity vanilla notes thereafter.
C: Well constructed and straight ahead juice with a rich pleasing hit that is more sustained with water. Give it 20 years in glass and we may be pushing into far higher score territory.

Great whisky. For me way better than the normal 18 or the mediocre 25 year old. Intense arrival, it maintains a maritime character and has substantial oak to affirm its age. Does NOT transform into a Speysider. Of course, if you like your Caol Ila peated, stay away from this one as it's pretty much guaranteed to disappoint. ;-) ~88-89p

very strong, slightly overpowering whisky, but still delicious. Something different from Caol Ila as the usual smoke.

    • Taste

Lemon, pear, pepper, alcohol burns neat (tolerable with water), malty, astringent.
    • Finish

A high-quality distillate from Caol Ila, one of the best distilleries in this new era
    • Nose
Very lovely stuff, you can get the waxes and a hint of peat from this malt (although unpeated), bourbon style, vanilla and fresh butter.
    • Taste
Nutty, strong ABV brought mouth-drying effects. Sweet candy and a hint of iodine
    • Finish
      Medium, rather fruity and sweet.

After opening the bottle, even a slight smoke could be felt, but then everything disappeared. In fact, the most mediocre whisky that I just tried. You can take the most common tomato 10ku or any of the cheapest ten from Speysad and it will cost 10 times cheaper than this mediocrity. Nothing but bitterness and omnipresent oak, I felt. Do not waste your money and time.
    • Nose
      Oak

      Oak, spices, bitterness

A good dram. I had the 17y old better in mind somehow as it was a bit cleaner as far as I remember and less of this medical influence. Nevertheless a good dram.
    • Nose
exotic fruit note (passion/banana), decent salt&honey and a decent medical note.
    • Taste
sweet fruity dance where honey meets mango. Nice profile! A bit sharp and oaky but it is a good mix.
    • Finish
The medical influence is now back in the finish and a bit metallic but not too much!

a very good caol ila. a malt for people who can take their time  to discover.
but please note that this is not a teaser!
    89/100
    • Nose
it´s quite similar to the recent 17yo unpeated caol ilas and there´s this same vague feeling of peat.
sea air, salt and tropical fruits with a lactic sourness that reminds of bruichladdich. rather mineral. ashy, too.
it´s one of those whiskies that initially don´t seem to be my cup of tea but given 10 minutes in the glass it really becomes a  fascinating malt.
pine sap, rosin (the stuff  fiddlers use to prepare their bows) linseed oil, ointments, tapenade, hints of vanilla.
    • Taste
very nervous in the best sense. the first that comes to mind are these green eucalyptus gums that are so strong that they seem to burn holes into your palate. (of course here they do not burn)
right behind a nice citrus/tropical fruitiness and these two components play with each other.
the peatiness is gone, the ashy side is in the very background.
    • Finish
      long, ultra clean, citrussy

This is another "Unpeated Style" whisky from Coal Ila that fits right into the space. Lovely fruits (ripe fruits), very direct like other unpeated versions of Caol Ila. A bit dry at the end.Concerning price/performance ratio: 7/10
    • Nose
Vanilla, tropical fruits (banana, pineapple), some coconut, salt, yellow fruits (ripe oranges, apricots), ripe apples, pears, some caramel.
    • Taste
Vanilla, tropical fruits (banana, pineapple), some coconut, yellow fruits (ripe oranges, apricots), apples, some caramel.
    • Finish
Long. Fruits (ripe oranges, pineapple) and some sweet fruity oak with some spices. Getting a bit dry at the end.

On the nose, vanilla, yellow-orange fruits, some scents of exotic perfumes, and spices!
In the mouth, the same scents with a characteristic oily side and very present, fruits, iodine, a little dry leather and .... a little and the feeling of smoke, but no!
In the finish, we find fine, subtle spices, fruity scents quite strong and a little macerated and we forget the alcoholic degree, yet consistent!

A singular dram, made to honor the need and / or the obligation to distil one day per year without peat, to help the production of blends
