What kind of stuff! The best Laphroaig 10y CS for years. A pretty complete malt who has everything one would expect from a dram and loves Laphroaig. Again, one thinks again to feel sherry casks, even if it is known only Bourbon barrels. By the way, with the Laphroaig Warehouse Tasting, they also had two completely identical ex-bourbon barrels (same batch, same origin, directly next to one another in the warehouse), which had matured completely differently. The second of them also tasted of sherry, or it is just these barrels that suggest a sherry casks. Great barrel selection! Anyway, at the Laphroaig Bowling tournament a few days ago, he was cutting everything else off, and there was also a Cairdaes from 2008 or 2009.
    • Nose
Bam, phenols in ya face! Full booming smoke immediately, absolutely Laphi style. After a few moments he becomes more mature and mature, the smoke is now taking on a profile that equals equal hospital, campfire and coal firing in winter. When the wind is good and the smoke of Port Ellen Maltings is pushed down, then Port Ellen smells like that. Below is dark, rich caramel and honeyed barbecue, also a little iodine and granite dust. What a density! Heat increases the intensity again, even more barbecue, some disinfectant and an idea lemon, plus salt caramel and again barbecue. Will be more mineral. Did I already mention barbecue?
    • Taste
Full, full, sweet, strong start, oak right in front, liquid block malt and salt caramel, to the back also some white pepper and an idea Menthol.
    • Finish
He is Laaang. At first dry from the oak, but this reduces over time and it is also ashy in the finish, salty sweet. Sticks the stuff in your mouth forever!

[July, 2017]  All of the recent NAS (remember: Never Accept Stupid marketing) editions of Laphroaig were rather weakish (immature, unbalanced) including the Cairdeas 2017.  So I am really curious if they at least managed to keep the high quality of this 10 year old cask stength.  There is hope - as it was distilled BEFORE the Beam Global management took over responsibility for Laphroaig in 2011 and subsequently pushed both equipment and employees to maximise output (by implementing resp. bonus schemes).  Every expert in the industry knows what happens when you just go for volumes...

The colour is burnished and quite dark - as usual they added some sherry casks (according to official statements all Laphroaig matures in bourbon casks only ;-) and that is why we all love the 10 year old cask strength!  The texture shows a few slow legs and many late fat and sticky tears.  This promises a great malt!  The nose is extremely phenolic and medical with a range from cold bonfire ashes to emergency room rubbish bin.  Some strong wooden aromas too (did they fill virgin oak casks in 2006 already?).  Nice nose, just the heavy woods drive it a little bit out of balance...

The initial mouthfeel is hot (58,1% abv) and instantly coats the whole mouth (as the texture promised).  Some slight adstringent moments from the tannins but this is rather welcomed as it keeps the other strong flavours somewhat contained.  The taste is honey-sweet and multi-layered (here the sherry casks do a great job again in multiplying the flavours range) all around a maritime peaty, medical and spicy profile.  The finish is very long as usual and attacks the tastebuds in different waves.  But it is a little drying too (cold ashes, metallic) that is not unpleasant after all.  A fair share of water makes the nose even more phenolic and ashy (I like it better when neat) and smoothes both the taste and finish.  They get much more sweeter and balanced - now it is dangerously quaffable...  So nose it neat and reduce it for drinking.

Another good batch of the 10CS but we will see if the quality stays that high once the Beam Global vintages have to be used (2021 onwards).  I light a candle for that...

This bottling will be forever linked to the huge existential crisis that shook the whisky scene when the Laphroaig shop was suddenly unavailable for a few weeks. Will this mystery dram ever be released or is it just a story we invented?

*Jonathan Frakes voice off*If Laphroaig would only put out one official annual release, it should be this one. Put all these new NAS bullcrap bottlings to the side and savour this juice. This is the real deal. Kudos to John Campell for keeping it real with these batches year after year. Modern style Laphroaig as it should be. Nothing more, nothing less. Thanks Thomas for the Sample.

Thank you, trust in Laphroaig restored. Everything fits together here, a classic that can not be broken, every year anew outstanding.
    • Nose
Phenolic smoke, algae, seaweed, salt, a strong breeze from the sea. Iodine. A fresh tarred road, steaming after a summer rain. Hansaplast, rubber abrasion. Smocked pork shoulder. Jippie, a Laphroaig.
    • Taste
Powerful start with cold smoke, fried bacon cubes, salt and pepper. At first one thinks that he wants to bite hard, but then he bends down and in the bend he leaves some bright fruits, which cushion the initially aggressive impression. Mild herbs and a little forest honey accompany the fruits, with phenolic smoke, algae and salt next to them.
    • Finish
Medium long, still smoky with a hint of smoked bacon, a fine layer of salt that lays on the tongue and lips.

Wow, what a part. That's what I call Brennerei art in perfection. For me the perfect whisky, if you like smoke. There is no sherry or barrel. Perfectly balanced, everything absolutely in balance. Pure whisky. unadulterated Without much sherry barrel and double bottom For me after the many sherry - sweet wine and Port Gedöne, the mother of all whisky's
    • Nose
At first rather reserved. For 58.1% even very reserved. You should give him time in the glass. Not 10 years, but 15 minutes it should already be. Then he gets more complex. Crushed banana. Like almonds - nuts - nougat - apples and oranges packed in a first aid kit. A Laphi in pure culture
    • Taste
For the AlK. % Content incredibly creamy and fruity. As a counterpoint, here again the light oak note. Wood - vanilla - tobacco and of course the smoke. Like a dried Diesel dungarees. Nothing stings and pinches in the crotch.
    • Finish
Sweet and dry at the same time. Long and warm

Another very nice Laphroaig 10 CS version. This one is so far the best of all batches for my taste. Got a lot in common with batch 007.

Even better than batch 003 and the red stripe. Hard to compare the green stripe with this new batches. These days there comes a sweet beefy sherry touch with the CS. Back in the green days the balance between TCP and sweetness was kind of elaborated (not in a good or bad way). Something has changed but not for the worse.

The Laphroaig 10 CS versions are still a bang for the buck. Amazing batch!

    Concerning price/performance ratio: 10/10
    • Nose
Smoke, iodine, salt, gras, mineral, burned banana, hints of sherry, berries, compote.
    • Taste
Fresh and sweet, dry with some meat. TCP, salt, machine oil, milk chocolate.
    • Finish
Long. Oak. Having a bonfire and throwing in some berries (like the 007).

  7. Sproaks scored this whisky 90 points Newbie

Phew, at the beginning in the nose already very violent phenolic. More than batch 006-008 in my view, even though I could not make a direct comparison here. The sweetness is also in batch 009 but not so pronounced I think.
All in all, a very delicious malt, the 10 CS does not disappoint with batch 009 - 90 points from me!
    • Nose
Phew, very, really VERY phenolic, hospital, gauze bandage freshly unpacked.
Intense seasoning, cinnamon, cloves, lavender. Charcoal, coniferous forest. Then maritime, sea salt, kelp, old ship plank.
      Fresh engine oil, 10W-60
    • Taste
Salty spicy start, followed by the hospital; very thick, oily. Heavy smoke is above the hospital on the coast.
Something sweet but not as much as expected. Vanilla, coconut, some pineapple, honey, tar
    • Finish
      Medium long - long
Now the sweeties are coming a bit more, still oily
Thick clouds of smoke hover over the sandy beach on Islay, just vanilla ice cream with coconut pieces and cream, refined with nutmeg served and the fresh wind blows you around the nose

  8. ctu scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

All batches are very high quality, only a little scattering in the points. Nice work!
    • Nose
Phenolic peat, medicines, adhesive plaster. Menthol and camphor.
      Vanilla, fruits, horseradish and mustard.
    • Taste
Bittersweet, peaty. Tannic oak. Sherry, spices, medicines, ash. Salt and chili, mint.
    • Finish
      Long, oaky, spicy, ash.

    These annual bombs. Horny part!
    • Nose
Brachial ashy but at the same time also very sweet smoke, roasted nuts, red cooked fruits, burnt strawberry jam, over time the smoke becomes typical medical, eventually some citrus notes come through, gentle liquorice
    • Taste
Another ashy alcohol-based kick, a lot of sweetness, sticks on the lips clearly liquorice, a lot of smoke,
    • Finish
At first, the medicinal character dominates here, the oak spice presents itself very sweet, the many smoke wearing the entrance eternal, slightly astringent

I would take this whisky to a desert island! A small sip and the taste will last forever!
