[August, 2018] After a long Glenfarclas session I am in the mood for an even more fruitier dram and these old Irish whiskies are a good choice in such a case, usually...

...and indeed it is. Both the nose and taste are truly fruit explosions but there is an unpleasant end of the finish that I do not like. Luckily, some water reduces that and it turns the whole dram into a very enjoyable experience. By the way, a typical Bushmills - and despite their marketing claim this is NOT one of the oldest distilleries in the world because the old one they are referring to was not situated at the same site as the modern Bushmills distillery but just in the same county...

The colour is pale straw and the nose offers exactly this extraordinary fruity profile I hoped for. It is like walking through an tropical fruit market with all the exotic aromas present. It is meaningless to list them here, simply find out yourself... Beside these fruits there are some honey and spicy aromas too, turning the nose even more interesting. I really like that!
    • Taste
      89 89
The taste is very fruity again but not really layered - so all is present at once and it is hard to unmingle all the different flavours this way. There is a certain bitterness from the tannins of the wood that sometimes is welcome to counter the enormous sweetness but at other times is annoying, unfortunately. I guess this one slept several years too long in the cask but still it is very enjoyable.
    • Finish

The dram arrives warming and coating in the mouth with a minor drying feeling (old papers). The finish is of medium length and adds no new impressions but a drying-astringent end (cold metals, plastics) - too bad as this is not to my liking at all. Some water reduces both the dram and this unpleasant ending too - I like it best just a little reduced to about 43% abv.

Immediately recognizable as a 20-something year old Irish, but it has a bit of a chinese medicinal rubbing oil note that i really don't know what to make of. Not as thick and fruity as some of the others, but surprisingly, with a few drops of water, it actually becomes more viscous and fruity!! So definitely swims well, and in fact, one must add water to this one. Went from 89 to 90 for me.

What a nice fruity clean dram. It's such a sweet sugary fruit cocktail. Almost like drinking the moist of a "mixed tropical fruit conservative tin can" but then with some nice warming alcohol.

Pale straw gold pour. Nose is clean, lemon/lime candies, grain alcohol, but nicely refined with some musty fruits. Mouth is more light citrus upfront with some mustier overripe fruits, can't really put my finger on it. Papya? Otherwise very clean palate as well, with some alcohol heat on the finish. A bit medicinal, starts to wear on you. Not one of my favorite Irish malts.

    Notes by Whisky Doris

This Irish whisky is a double-fired, barely-tapped single malt from one of the oldest distilleries in the world , which unfortunately we are not allowed to name.

On the nose this Irish single malt inspired by ripe, dark berries, which are complemented in the mouth by maritime and herbal aromas and wrapped. The finish would be even longer - no wonder, with these fantastic flavors - again a great Irishman!

Tip: also this bottling should give you some time to breathe, so that all aromas can show - it's worth it!
