Whisky Reviews for Balblair 2006 SMWS 70.18

7 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 85.44 points

  1. KayMeertens scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
A lime candy sweetness. Then malt. Cookie-style, slightly nutty and even cardboard-like, but not too much.
    • Taste
Still that sweetness, but quickly overpowered by salted caramel. Slightly dirty. Malt, orange and a whiff of smoke. I get the watermelon association as well. Water seems to make it more spicy.
    • Finish
More salty, with some maltiness and candied orange.

  2. St. Pauli scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

This is a pleasant young dram. It's not overly complex. If you add water, the youthful sturdyness vanishes to give you a fruity, crisp, slightly spririty dram. For me, it's a good whisky to drink as an aperitif.
    • Nose
Young and juicy indeed, and certainly not too young. The fruity, slightly malty character of the Balblair spirit shows. Melon, pineapple, and other tropical fruits. Next, there is cake dough, vanilla, and some tangerine popping up. At the end, there is something green which holds the middle between chive, dill, and grass.
    • Taste
On the palate, the youthfullness shows a little. It's still rather rough on the tongue. With water, it gets better though. It's still fruity, with water melon being very prominent here. Next, there is lemon zest,  ginger bread, pepper, grass and a bit of vanilla.
    • Finish
The finish is moderately long, giving a pleasing sourness of the fruit, moderate spiciness, and a slightly creamy feel of the vanilla.

Compared with Balblair 2005 SMWS 70.15
    • Nose
Fresh citrus, fruity - dragon fruit, wood, earl grey tea and avocado.
    • Taste
Spices, honey and citrus - grape fruits.
    • Finish
Citrus - grape fruits, ginger and toast.

  6. FernetBranco scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Pleasantly light and unobtrusive malt. Beautiful fruit and subtle spiciness make this Balblair an ideal summer companion. Priced a firecracker.

    SMWS Tasting Notes

    Colour: Oatmeal Flapjack

    Flavour Profile: Young & spritely

The fresh, light and airy aroma felt like sitting out on the
patio for the very first time in spring and after having painted the shed and
mowed the lawn for the first time that year, we deserved a treat. We got a real
taste of, hopefully, things to come, with juice made out of watermelon, freshly
grated ginger and mint as well as a coconut cake with tangy lime frosting.
Water added a fruity scent of pealing and slicing peaches and green apples
whilst on the palate now a moist ginger bread cake covered in a lemon glaze.

Drinking tip: Waiting for that warm summer sun.
