A pretty solid basic malt from the Tobermory distillery. Lightly fruity, quite savory, but balanced quite well.
    • Nose
      84 84
Very much a savory profile with some nicely interwoven light fruitiness. Sour apple, white grapes and white melon, vanilla, malty, sugar snaps, dried grasses, nutty on sugared almonds, herbaceous with some slight broth and minerality at the back.
    • Taste
      82 82
Quite oily and sweet on the palate, but also spicy and herbaceous. Vanilla, honey, melon, grapeskins, more of a citrussy sourness (lemons and sour orange), barley sugar, still quite salty and grassy with bitter herbs and drying spices like sage, nutmeg and pepper. Development shifts more and more towards the peppery and spicy side.
    • Finish
      81 81
Short to medium in length: light fruit syrup, slight note of honey, fennel, sage, drying spices like nutmeg, pepper and some clove.

2nd out of 6 in a blind tasting.
I liked this one quite a bit, with a few more years it would be amazing!
    • Nose
Leathery, apples, buttery, some funk, some salt
    • Taste
      A bit thin, sweet
    • Finish
Short-medium persistence, peppery, sweet and salty

  3. Titanicus scored this whisky 86 points Member Senior

One of my first bottles and the one I liked the most.
Fresh "green" smell and taste; grassy, ginger spice, quite long.
Liked it better than the 12 year old, which is "rounder" but doesn't have so much character.

I have rarely tasted such a malt. Here you can already find the full range of sweetness, fruit and herbs through to sea salt and smoke during the nosing. This complexity is unusual for a 10-year-old. Unfortunately, the tongue and throat are a bit too impetuous and rough for my taste, which spoils the overall impression a bit.

    • Nose
The attack is very powerful and slightly malty. Interestingly, the first impression quickly turns into slightly spicy herbal notes such as dried grass, hay and heather. Only then does an almost syrupy sweetness with apricots slowly set in. In addition, I find almonds and marzipan balls, as well as mineral and earthy notes that are difficult to interpret. Maritime notes with an association of sea salt and a hint of smoke complete the overall picture.
    • Taste
The first impression is much sweeter than on the nose. Then comes a slightly peppery, slightly alcoholic sharpness. This makes it very intense and almost a little too boisterous for my taste. After this powerful first impression, malt and the floral-spicy notes of the nosing come through. Again I find salty, maritime notes and even a faint smoke.
    • Finish
Medium long and warming with a mix of malt and a light sweetness. Gradually, a slight bitterness comes through. Unfortunately, it also seems a bit too impetuous and rough in the finish.

    • Nose
      85 85
Freshly ground grass, apple juice, pear, white grapes, unripe bananas and cucumber.
    • Taste
      84 84
Quite intense and a nice mouthfeel.
Citrus fruit, apple, pear, honey and peppery. Not very complex.
    • Finish
      82 82
The aftertaste is fairly short. Some lime and pepper remain. A little bit dry.

understated sweetness, again lemongrass and anise

It makes sense how much I like Ledaig. I like this but wanted it to be smoky. This is a solid unpeated offering, with a bit of that island/maritime character. I didn’t find the funkiness nearly as pronounced as in Ledaig.
    • Nose
      80 80
Very malty, grassy, woody. There’s a vague berry/cream/parfait type aroma hidden in there.
    • Taste
      84 84
Sharp fruit flavor right away, honey, some spice.
    • Finish
      76 76
Sweet maritime character, feels a bit light/thin.

    Colour: Pale Straw
Nose: Spirit driven, some sweetness, honey, vanilla, barley sugar and notes of grass and herbs
Taste: More savoury than sweet, however with water this changes and it becomes quite well balanced. Typical Tobermory notes of honey can be found amongst some unripe peel; think green apple and green mango, not the sweet orange type. Some vegetal notes and drying ginger type spice underpins from beginning to end. It’s not your every day 10 year old, there is plenty going on here and just now I’m finding more, some very faint peat and kiwi berries. I know the barley is not peated but there’s something there.
Finish: Medium. The sweetness is almost entirely gone now leaving being the savoury taste which gives a slightly drying finish with a touch a spice that lingers. A fitting end to quite a multilayered younger official bottling where the spirit is able to show exactly what is has to offer.

Comes slightly inconsequential. Only the maritime, salty notes I like quite well. Otherwise quite unspectacular.
    • Nose
      81 81
Easy, without much fanfare. Fruity, light fruit. Salt and maritime notes. Light spice. In addition, somehow artificial but not unpleasant citrus fruits. Something like gummy bears.
Fades but relatively quickly and it remains an alcoholic touch back.
    • Taste
      80 80
Spicy on, a little vanilla. In addition the fruits. Everything is structured very simply.
I can no longer find the maritime notes and the slight saltiness. Alcoholic it does not work here anymore.
    • Finish
      80 80
Medium length finish, will dry easily
Here is the salt again more noticeable.

    • Nose
Species, very fresh, green apples, lollipop, very light nuts smell then banana, flowers and citrus
    • Taste
Light species, citrus, banana, light saturation
    • Finish
Citrus, banana, sweet notes, short finish

Now this fellow is worth getting a bottle. Number one: it's a good bang for your buck, number two: it's an introvert malt that needs to breathe in the bottle for 3 weeks or 4-5 drams, whichever comes first. Then it can be fairly inviting and good-natured.

    ¡Cuidado! >drowning hazard< - go easy on the water.
    • Nose
      86 86
Fresh, we're treading on coastal territory and an occasional bog (no peat smoke though). Light malty notes with a whiff of lemon.
After breathing, white chocolate -if you can believe that - and dill. What a strange combo, but I do like it!
    • Taste
      88 88
It's a grumpy little islander, no mistake. A tad rough around the edges, not a cute & perky speysider that comes to greet you with sweetness and honey. Some dryness and citrus astringent notes play a supporting role.
Water brings out grass and more of that salty sea spray.
    • Finish
      83 83
Short to medium finish, butter biscuit, creme brulee and a touch of something ale-ish. Leaves the scene, well, discretely.

  20. Pyromann scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

Interesting memorable whisky with unique character. Some peppery sharpness and maritime saltiness dominates, but there is still something missing to score 90s.
    • Nose
Peppery sharpness, maritime saltiness. Some pear-like sweetness in the back.
    • Taste
Sharpness and saltiness, softens after a while and some solid, robust chhocolate sweet notes show up.
    • Finish
Peppery, relatively long, developes to more salty.

A powerful, stubborn island malt; very interesting!
    [Color] straw;
    • Nose
      Citrus fruits (lemon), fresh apple compote, sweet, malty;
    • Taste
      soft onset, then strong seasoning (ginger, pepper, anise); sweet and juicy, lemons, apples, salty, slightly dry;
    • Finish
      medium length finish; long spicy salty echoes;

Aroma: family ties with Ledaig are immediately traced: caramel and candy flavor, maybe even a little apple cider vinegar, vanilla, slices of green immature apple, a little later vegetable subject: boiled root vegetables, earthiness. Freshness, dried grain. Quite a bright aroma.
Taste: pepper-ginger attack, bitter lime zest, oak bitterness in passing the freshness of mint.
Finish: longer than average, warming, hot pepper is replaced by white pepper, vegetables again, cardboard, slowly melting bitterness of wormwood, some salt on the tongue
    Rating: 85
Bottom line: one of the most unusual whisky I've tried! I have long wanted to try my brother Ledaig, and he did not disappoint me! Whisky is an aperitif, there is only a little sweetness in the aroma, I would probably think that I’m trying to try something from Lowland ... I personally liked it very much, that's why the score is quite high, but I would not recommend it to everyone sweets and these vegetable notes are probably not for everyone to like. And to me personally, he reminded me that spring is coming with his freshness!
