One of the tastiest 18 year old whisky I've ever had. Very harmonious in everything, the main honey content of HP goes by the wayside, here it reveals peat, smoke and marine themes.
    • Nose
The same dry ca 15 year old, but this whisky is different, much tastier. Sour, sweet, marine aroma, iodine, a lot of smoke, all this is wrapped in the sweetness of dried fruits, very balanced.
    • Taste
Powerful, sweet-salty, iodine, woody, many spicy spices
    • Finish
      Long lasting, mineral and sweet.

Rich, full-bodied, honey and peat aroma.
    Sweet and salty.

highland park twisted tattoo 16y VS highland park 18y (bottled 2014). i started putting both in a glencairn for about half an hour before starting this review. i must say that the twisted tattoo won this round, which i did not expect. both were amazing but the 16y twisted tattoo just blew me away. it does not happen often, that i find the taste even better than a very good nose. it is not that i did not like the 18y, but the 16y was just better.

before this battle happened i only knew the 12y and some travel retail stuff from hp and wasnt a big fan but with this tasting this changed!

this is something completely different from the twisted tattoo. very herbal, heather, laurel, then some crisp fruit comes through. maybe grapefruit with sugar? rather complex, some floral notes come through. cherry blossom. the peat (which i probably wouldnt get without knowing it) round everything up a little bit but is very subtle. when you compare the noses this is almost candy sweet while the 16y i more fizzy.

wow, for 43% abv this stuff bangs. fresh salty notes topped with some sour flavors. omami thing going on here. in a blind tasting i would say this is a japanese whisky. some soy sauce. dont get any fruits. very different from the nose though. herbs, herbs, herbs. round. i cant imagine someone not liking this whisky.

rather long for this abv. very little oaky notes topped with some herbs. umami flavours. mushrooms. chalk. lime (the stuff which stays on your pipes, not the fruit)

Relatively simple and a one-dimensional sherry touch. I'm very much on PX barrels. A higher alcohol content and more smoke would have done him good. All in all, far too expensive for what you get.
    • Nose
Pear, very light smoke, sweet, light spices
    • Taste
sweet, a little oak, very soft, sherry notes, light spices
    • Finish
      short, very light oak

Sweet subtle smoke. Some exotic fruit like mango and kiwi and a hint of nailpolish.
    • Taste
      81 81
Again some vanilla and kiwi, accompagnied with a subtle smokiness and a hint of white pepper. The body is a bit to watery for me ... the abv should have been a couple percentages higher.
    • Finish
      78 78
The finish is rather dry and short. Again with some white pepper and I seem to get a wee hint of the nailpolish from the nose as well.
