[August, 2017]  Finally I managed to get a bigger sample so I can do a full review of this methusalem whisky tonight.  My tasting sip at Limburg whisky fair was very promising so I look forward to this experience.

The colour is pale gold and the texture shows very late sticky tears that slowly build legs.  So this is a fat and oily dram what promises a great mouthfeel.  But first the nose:  It offers a honey-sweet and fruity profile with lots of different homegrown and exotic fruits  and all kinds of nuts, really adorable.  One to sniff for hours and still you find something new (e.g., floral aromas).  The initial mouthfeel is just as the texture promised:  mouth-coating and warming with very little bitter notes from the wood (surprisingly little after 43 years in the cask).  The taste is multi-layered and very complex on fruity, nutty, sugary, malty and wooden flavours all in great balance.  Chew it for a while and find a substantial part of drinker's paradise in there.  The finish is long and vanishes nicely in small waves without any distracting moments (no drying, no bitterness, no adstringent feelings).  Simply great!  At the very end some peaty and ashy flavours pop up for a last salute to the tastebuds.  Water is not needed (it flattens the dram).

If only the price is more acceptable I surely would buy a bottle but so I have to wait until the whisky bubble bursts - as a drinker I am willing to pay as much as 300 Euro for such a fine dram.  It is an enjoyable whisky for sure!

Nose

Floral and citrus on the nose, no wood influence. A bit of surprise at this age, but a pleasant one. A little bit of dust and dunnage warehouse smell but all very nice. Then lots of fruit; fresh green apples and red apples. Some honey and sugar candy (pink sugar cubes), and pastry too.

Taste

It’s starts fresh with some lovely citrus fruits, gentle and prickly but not too much. Very nice and vibrant, honey and a hint of vanilla. There is a bit of saltiness and a very small touch of ginger. But all within the limits, this is good! Very good!

Finish

A pleasant and long finish, mostly fruits and a little bit of oak. But just a gentle element. All very good and nice.

Comments

It’s old, but at some point it feels younger than 43 years old and at the same time it also shows its age as it is a very good developed whisky. It’s a great one, very well balanced, and a lovely nose and taste.

[April, 2017]  I had a tasting sip at Limburg whisky fair (to small to do a full review) and scored it as a preliminary impression with 90 points.  A beautiful dram with a very complex profile on floral and fruity aromas with significant but never unpleasant wooden notes (no wonder after 43 years in cask).

But way too expensive (for me) to buy a full bottle...
