Amazingly good for the fact that it was probably bottled quite young. When I rummage through my memory and think of 10-year-old Yamazaki, this one actually seems even more harmonious.
When visiting the distillery, you can really access it without hesitation.

Medium-long finish. Orange, pipe tobacco and honey.

Okay for Bourboncask fans, has nothing to do with flaws apart from a little alcohol in the nose, but anything but exciting or complex.
    • Nose
Malt, cereals, some resin and pear, macadamia, a little bit bubbly and that at 40%, respect, young, rustic bourbon barrel, green apple, vanilla
    • Taste
Dry peach, cereals, honey, malt, almonds, macadamia, vanilla, some milk chocolate, light, dry apple and pear, some ginger and young oak
    • Finish
Almonds, apricots, apples, some toffee, apple core, short to medium

Had bought this personally at the distillery after getting our mouths watered during the tour.

It smells delicious after I've given it around 10 minutes.
Clearly vanilla, slightly sweet, somewhat woody.

Mild in the mouth - good, it has only 40% - now has a slightly spicier effect. The oak notes come out.

    Really tasty ...

  5. Dram Dracula scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

Young-tasting, benign, smooth, no off-flavors, drinkable -- essentially, it's a Yamazaki that is sold at the distillery shop (price is USD$15) for visitors to bring home so that they can say they've been to the distillery. Tourists come by the busloads (Chinese, Koreans, Japanese..), so they obviously don't have enough aged stock for these folks. The limit was one bottle per customer. Nothing here for the experienced drinker.

Fresh, citrus like with a hint of fruit, well done bottling which doesn't need time to open up (additional time doesn't improve it I think, but fruity notes disappear).

Toward the end of the bottle, there's a hint of Yamazaki's new-make yeasty sourness and more woodiness on the nose. The palate breaks apart a bit, but salted caramel shows up and the baking spices linger for longer on the finish. This is a mixture of sherry-cask and new white-oak cask matured Yamazaki that have been aged for about 10 years, according to the shop assistant. The price was 1,460 yen in the shop, which makes this a great deal.
    • Nose
sherry and raspberries, oak and floral (violets), slight acetone note, citrus, vanilla custard, marshmallows
    • Taste
sherry and dried fruits, cafe latte, cocoa
    • Finish
      baking spices and licorice allsorts
