Whisky reviews for Clynelish 1972 GM

4 users have left 5 reviews for this whisky. Average rating is 91.71 points.

  1. Dris scored this whisky 93 points Connoisseur

Dirtier than most but still well within the clynelish character. Old leather and cognac-like rancio notes accompany the beeswax and spicey european oak. The nose is exceptionally complex yet the palate lacks some intensity, the abv feels too low.

Had this as part of an ancient malts tasting. Context is everything I suppose and this fell a little flat against the competition, literally. The ones to beat it out were:

    1: Brora 38 official
    2: 73 Speyside
    3: Brora 34 official
    4: Convalmore 32 official
    5: 72 clynelish
    6: 1968 Strathisla Duncan Taylor
    7: 1968 bunnahabhain Duncan Taylor.

My notes indicate a beautiful nose full of waxes, milk and white chocolate, exotic fruits and melons, marzipan and candied orange. The palate starts to fall off a bit weak and flat. Although it’s pleasant, waxy, light milk chocolate and earl grey cream. The finish is short and underpowered, with notes of crystallized oranges, dark chocolate, black tea and a good amount of bitterness.

Again some beautiful notes, but struggled in this setting. Obviously It would preform better on its own.
