[April, 2018]  I traded this bottle for an almost full Springbank 12-years old cask strength (edition 2018) that I did not like.  We will see if I like this one better...

The colour is old gold and the texture shows fat tears with medium fast legs.  The nose shows a sweet malt-driven profile with some herbs and spices and a somewhat sweet&sour-winey spike (that I do not like but it is not annoying either).  There are some hints of sulphurous aromas in this nose, too.  The mouthfeel is warming and coating with a distracting drying feeling (cardboards, old papers).  The taste is very sweet on barley sugars and honey flavours with some over-ripe fruits, spices and the sweet&sour winey aromas again.  Not too complex, but easy to sip.  The finish is of medium length and quite drying with this unpleasant cardboardy feeling that dominates the aftertaste, too bad.  Water releases more of the sulphurous notes - so forget about it!

Actually, the vatting composition is quite good but unfortunately they added some below-average casks that contributed an unpleasant drying cardboardyness.  And at least one of the sherry casks in this batch was sulphury...

It is an exclusive Highland Park 10 Year Old single malt Scotch whisky created to celebrate the 30th anniversary of John Rebus, one of crime fiction’s best loved creations by author Ian Rankin. But now it turns out to be a standard 10 with a fancy label.

    A blind sample ...

    It seems relatively young.
The streaks on the glass run off quickly ...

    A first nose:
    Smoky, spicy.
Not a typical Islay, more like a different peated whisky.
Think of an An Cnoc for the first time ...

    Noticeably stronger in the mouth.
    Would estimate at least 46%.
New associations go in the direction of Kilchoman, although with Kilchoman I always feel the carnation.
This one is spicy but not intrusive.
    Young but very aromatic.

You can sip it very well with a cigar by the fireplace ...

An easy dram. Does not hurt, is not bad, but does not really skin from the stool.
    • Nose
      84 84
The scent of a spring meadow, green apples, bright pears. A fine smoky note. Fresh wood shavings, heather, marjoram, cinnamon, honey, burned caramel.
    • Taste
      84 84
Dry onset. Spicy with wood shavings. Fine smoke. No equivalent of the fruity-fresh aromas from the nose, here rather orange peels. Almond paste. Soft and creamy.
    • Finish
      83 83
Medium to short, dry. Slices of orange, heather, grated hazelnuts and almonds.

    • Nose
Fresh citrus notes; light fruit (pear); Flower meadow; Heather; Malt; slightly nutty, slightly grainy; Vanilla; Caramel; all carried by a very gentle note of cold smoke
    • Taste
Citrus; light, peppery sharpness; Pagan; Nut; Vanilla; again this delicate smoke with a slightly woody accompaniment; slightly grassy (again the flower meadow from the nose), toasted white bread
    • Finish
      Smoke gets a little drier; citrus again; slightly tart;

Compared to the 10 standard, the Rebus is much heavier for me and, despite the same alcohol content, stronger and chocolatier sweet. Even if this means that the typical heather notes take a back seat, for me personally it is much more expressive and tastier.
    • Nose
      86 86
Heavily sweet coffee syrup and toffee meet fresh orange, lemon and grapefruit. Sunflower oil, hops and green vegetables flow into an earthy fir forest with woody notes and spice, while a hint of a cold campfire hovers over everything.
    • Taste
      83 83
Oranges and raisins in dark chocolate mix with malty herbal sweets and an oak-flavored, spicy bitterness that never completely overwhelms the sweetness of the chocolate fondue.
    • Finish
      84 84
Dark chocolate ice cream, toffee and citrus fruits also determine the finish, with a new pineapple and grape note at the end.
