The whisky has both more mature and younger components, as NAS already suggests. A pleasant, not too intrusive smoke note, which is stronger than in the standard bottlings. The light sulfur is not unpleasant, but gives the whisky more nuances. For what he offers, he is a bit overpriced, because I think the 12er better.
    • Nose
      83 83
Burning gum, wood sugar, dry herbs (rosemary and sage?); pleasant, slightly sulphurous notes, which, however, disappear after some time. Clearly sweet.
    • Taste
      81 81
First, the smoke comes in the form of a cold fireplace, while the whisky is quite sweet, burning gum is still a bit to feel, even the herbs clearly noticeable. A warm mouthfeel, the whisky gets lighter in the back with less fruit. Towards the end there is still a little caramel.
    • Finish
      81 81
Medium-long and smoky, woody, dry and at the same time sweet.

An interesting one. I really like these NAS, which HP has been throwing on the market in last years. Valkyrie, Valknut and Valfather are all great. You have definitely better choices for the price, but if you like HP, try at least a sample.

The Viking Legend Series consists of the Valkyrie, the Valknut and the Valhalla, created in collaboration with the Danish designer Jim Lyngvild who was responsible for the design of the bottle and box. The Valkyrie is made with 50% peated malt. According to legend, Valkyries would crash from the sky on horseback to seek out the bravest dead warriors to take them to Valhalla, the great hall of the Norse god Odin. Valkyrie was launched in 2017.

    • Nose
In the nose you experience sweet barley, salted caramel, heather honey, straw / grass, cold smoke, dusty earth, dried fruit such as raisins, prunes and apricots, red berries, citrus peel, milk chocolate, dried herbs, mint, nutmeg and tobacco.
    • Taste
The taste has aromas of sweet barley, salted caramel, vanilla, heather honey, grass and straw, dried fruit such as raisins, prunes and apricots, red currants, cooked apple, citrus peel, dusty earth, cold smoke, leather, pepper, cinnamon, ginger, liquorice and mint.
    • Finish
The finish is medium long and especially sweet. The high ABV and increased peated malt content cannot disguise the fact that we are talking about a Young Single Malt. A slight bitterness towards the dry end. It remains a bit on the thin side. The alcohol is quite noticeable and sometimes even a little hot. I find sweet barley, vanilla, salted caramel, toffee, heather honey, grass and straw, cold smoke and dusty earth, ash, red berries, dried fruits such as raisins, prunes and apricots, citrus zest, cooked apple, cocoa powder, liquorice, pepper , ginger, nutmeg, cloves, mint, leather, tobacco and wood shavings.

One of three whiskys in Highland Park's Viking Legends series.
    • Nose
Winey, vanilla, sauna heated with birch logs, toffee.
    • Taste
Roundly sweet, a little ashiness tries to join in, honey and a little herbaceousness.
    • Finish
The softness recedes, herbal bitterness fills the aftertaste. Somehow a mouthless whisky, many good moments in the aroma and taste, but the final finish fails.

Viking Legend series, which is made up of three editions: Valkyrie, Valknut and Valfather. The premiere of the first bottle in the series, took place in 2017. A Danish artist, Jim Lyngvild, who is responsible for the graphic design of all editions, both packaging and labels on the bottle, was invited to cooperate.

The whisky itself is bottled with no age statement on the label. The distillates were matured in bourbon casks as well as sherry casks.
    • Nose
Initially mild and little volatile, after a while it opens a bit, it is quite sweet, fruity (red fruits), vanilla, there are notes of malt, delicate smoke, the smell of earth and ash, grassy and herbal accents, spices, nutmeg, ginger, after a while more honey, a bit of caramel, dried slightly smoked plums, the aroma is a bit subdued, needs a while, with time there are also nuts in caramel, some toffee, raisins, some forest fruit, and a bit of citrus, still a lot of sweetness, and in the background delicate smoke
    • Taste
Quite oily, definitely drier than it might seem and, above all, much more spicy than the smell announced, chilli, paprika, ginger, pepper, cherries in chocolate, dark chocolate, smoke, earthiness, smoked plums, apricots, red fruits, raisins, oak , vanilla, after a while more dried fruits and ashy notes, figs, cinnamon, smoked apple, salty licorice, the sweetness from the aroma disappears, it is fruity, but quite spicy, nuts, a bit of leather accents appear
    • Finish
Quite long, definitely dry, a large dose of ash and earth, dried fruit, oak bitterness

Dry grass, very, very minimal smoky tones, light bitter fruit, unspectacular on the palate and bordering on too sprity/not so tasty anymore. The finish is a bit too alcoholic.

Overall a thoroughly drinkable malt that I will probably never remember again. The nosing is slightly better than the tasting.

Start of a new whisky trilogy on Nordic legends
A new Highland Park is in sight: Valkyrie is the name of the new bottling that, according to Beam Suntory, will probably reach our Whisky.de online shop at the end of May. It is the first bottling in a trilogy about Nordic legends.

  17. WhiskeyfanRoy scored this whisky 87 points Expert Junior

Very nice box with black glossy bottle.
Intense tropical fruit flavors in the glass, along with some peach, cantaloupe, caramel, sweeter chocolate, burnt wood and more.
The taste is based on fruit and caramel, coupled with the most characteristic honey-flavored smoke from Highland park, the alcohol content plays a very good role here, the body is very strong, and the taste is plump and round.
The Finish is medium to long, still fruity, caramelized and sweetly smoky.

The total taste is 86 points, which is obviously better than that of 12yo (but I think it is simply the difference in the concentration of abv in the bottle, and there should be no big difference in the ageing years), but compared with the performance of 18yo, it is still a little far behind.
At its price, two bottles of 12yo can be bought in my area, and while it's worth it for its performance, I'd rather just add some money to buy 18yo for a better experience.
Personally keep a bottle as a display collection, because the outer box is very beautiful.
The taste score is 87 points, and the price does not affect the score.

Very different NAS expression from HP here, Islay notes on the nose and not a great balance. A bit bland on the palate.

    Review: https://youtu.be/nH8miBg4SLw
    • Nose
      82 82
Hmm, really a different nose for an HP. It's got medicinal notes, light camphor, borderline petroleum/kerosene, much more Islay characteristics really. Odd. Apart from that, lemon oil, green apples, very light toffee, smoked vanilla, light hint of sulphur, brine.
    • Taste
      75 75
Extremely light, cottony feel, balance and structure both not good. Quite a lot of smoke, tobacco leaf, light medicinal notes, bitter oak and freshly cut grass, sour cherries, green apples, and really lacks sweetness. Sort of a bland expression, really. Second chew first of all brings some sulphur, but not too much. Very little bit of toffee. Third chew doesn't bring much new, just a bit of a minty fresh note. Balance is still not great.
    • Finish
      76 76
Smoke dominates, light ginger, light mint, no trace of sweetness, some oak still lingers.

  31. 2ndSip scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

relatively complex on the nose with an evolving aromatic profile.
The taste also develops into something sweeter with each sip, but generally remains emphatically spicy.
The finish is the weakest side of the malt, even if the ashy smoke lingers for a long time.
In the trilogy "Viking Legend" this is the weakest in my opinion. But don't get it wrong, the malt as such is good.
[85 - 81 = delicious -> get a second bottle if price is within the range]
    • Nose
      85 85
the heather note is the first thing that arrives on the nose, it also dominates the first phase in the olfactory profile.
Then a certain spicy note (nutmeg and cinnamon) builds up. In addition to this oak seasoning, a nut aroma (almonds) is becoming increasingly evident; over time that turns into a marzipan note.
If at the beginning there is still a light fruity aroma (apple, pear, apricot) together with honey and a little caramel, over time a red and berry aroma (strawberry, raspberry) appears.
After he was able to draw in more air, a salty component shows up - but it's hard to find (for me).
    • Taste
      84 84
extremely soft to the touch. Spice builds up with a little delay and leads to salivation and an extremely creamy-viscous texture on the tongue.
The focus is initially on the seasoning, with a little smoke aroma added; now has more of a campfire character with dry ashes, but the heather still peaks through from time to time.
Second sip: significantly sweeter and fruity, with the light fruity aroma first appearing again and then turning into a sour, berry note.
At the back there is a slightly bitter note; dark chocolate / men's chocolate with an increased cocoa content.
Third sip: the marzipan note is back, but a partly peppery spice remains on the palate.
    • Finish
      81 81
the aftertaste is rather medium long, accompanied by an (oak) spice.
The dry and rather ashy smoke also remains for a while and later also has something leathery-tobacco-like, if only in a hinted way.
It must be noted here that this ashy smoke with the hint of heather remains in the mouth for a long time.
It also becomes drier and takes on the bitter note, but without being bitter (which I personally like).

Nicely balanced and complex malt. The nose is particularly enthusiastic. Great whisky.
    • Nose
First fresh with sweet citrus fruits and a delicate, aromatic wood smoke. Honey, vanilla and apples follow. Maybe some ginger and a hint of oak and salt. The fruits get darker and darker and the sweetness also increases. Very beautiful and complex nose!
    • Taste
First oily and soft, then a distinct, peppery flavor sets in. Light, light fruits, vanilla and chocolate. Always very sweet and salty notes.

Where do i start? A very pale, and boring whisky, very little intensity on the nose, not a complex whisky.

Nose: some earthy floral notes, along with some caramel but mostly honey notes, some sweetness and a little saltyness.

Taste: maritime, floral and sweetness along with mostly honey overpowering all the other flavours.

Finish: rather poor and short lasting, mostly honey again

Decent whisky rather well composed. However, feeling quite young with apparent notes of fusel oil, which I personally do not like at all (it reminds me a homemade moonshine). The signature HP smoke is very subtle on the nose but becomes much bigger on the palate and aftertaste. Well, another solid middle-ranger from HP.

    Colour: light amber.
Nose: sweet with dried fruits, light smoke closer to wood, than peat, salt, raisin, leather, oak, sweet fruits, berries, vanilla, red orange, citrus and heather honey notes.
Mouth: sweet with dried fruits, caramel, cream, raisin, spices, oak, very light peated smoke, honey notes.
Finish: long and very light peaty with dried fruits, oak, grass notes.
Valkyrie is a well balanced and tasty whisky. I gave 86 points.

a NAS after the dark origins!
    • Nose
smoke, malt, various fruits cooked and dried, grass, return honeyed
    • Taste
Smoke well present, budding peat, fruit well mixed as for a "good" blend!
sweetness on the palate, a little dark chocolate, nuts, nuts, dry herbs and spices rather strong peppery, it is varied but not too definable!
leather, dust, it's young sherry, also a little licorice in the end of the mouth
    • Finish
average, on these scents a little diffuse, then it starts suddenly, lack of length!
to believe that qq more years could bring him something very good!

Modern NAS Highland Park, slightly incongruous: younger, smokier distillates wrestling with older, sherry oak-dominated ones. A little hot, like many recent HP official bottlings. Pretty abrupt and somewhat alcoholic finish. Nothing to write home about and a definite step back from the intense and respectable „Dark Origins“, which this replaces.

I was so disappointed with this. The bottle took way too long to drink down, and by then the oxidation had taken its toll.  I'm not sure what makes this so much less enjoyable than Kilkerran, for instance, which is another challenging and not forthcoming dram. It's not baaaad, but ain't your finest moment HP!  POSSIBLY your finest packaging though, and therein lies thine problem.
    • Nose
Ugh. Scorched motor oil. Rubber. Smoke in the background. Not great dawg.
    • Taste
Thin and watery. What the heck? Peat, but not good peat. Dirt (duh?), and again some smoke. Some honey sweetness in there but it's pretty harsh.
    • Finish
Short, drying, lingering smoke. Bitter stomach acid and oak. It's actually a little pleasant after a few minutes time.

It's interesting to see what HP has been throwing onto the market lately ...
    • Nose
Caramel sweet and cream sauce, honey, milk chocolate. That's it but then for the beginning. Not unpleasant, but not really exciting. Caramel dominates, after a while comes in a good dose of vanilla and a malting note. A liquid toffee candy.
    • Taste
A reflection of the nose: vanilla, caramel, milk chocolate, honey. Slightly metallic. Over time, peppermint and cooling menthol. The heather, which can be seen in some HPs already in the nose, are only here on the tongue. Uh, you have to like this peppermint note, it's getting more and more intense.
    • Finish
Peppermint - still -, pepper, milk chocolate, honey. Medium.

Another, interesting and unusual Highland Park made of 100% smoked malt.
    • Nose
light fruity, green pear (shell), mango and physalis. Vanilla comes through briefly, replaced by neat Pfeffrigkeit and smoke (more than 12-year-old). Clear coriander notes (green and slightly soapy), new leather shoes (straight out of the box) and some lemongrass
    • Taste
salty earthiness, oily soft. Violent black pepper and the clear smoke fill the mouth. Again citrus notes, combined with the sharpness not quite fresh ginger, where the sharpness has gotten the upper hand. Comparatively little fruit, very on the spicy side.
    • Finish
      Smoldering hay and dark chocolate

  77. markjedi1 scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

Not bad, but not ’60 EUR good’ either, in all honesty.
    • Nose
To be honest, the nose starts off rather sharp with a touch of rubber. Luckily that evaporates somewhat quickly to make room for all kinds of white and yellow fruit. Think apples, pears, peach and a thick fat hint of white chocolate. Some honey and a touch of smoke. All in all pleasant enough, but not earth shattering by far.
    • Taste
The arrival is fine, as is the strength. But on the palate, it is a lot less fruity than the nose promised. Peat and woodsmoke – in collaboration with pepper, nutmeg and some licquorice – give him some spicy character. While still sufficiently sweet, it is not fruity. Rather some tobacco, smoked meat, caramel and honey.
    • Finish
The finish is rather short and it turn very dry as if from chili, wood shavings and oak.

    • Nose
Slightly smoky and herbaceous. A little green apple, honey, more herbs and oak spice.
    • Taste
Relatively sharp and not so full. Then it will be quite delicious. The honey comes through nicely and does a little fight with various (indefinable) herbs.

      Medium. Light smoke again.

I found this a lot more flat and one dimensional than the Dark Origins, it did have a bit of a sherry character, and the peat was there, but it was all kind of muted, especially on the finish. Was nice enough to sip but really not anything I’d seek out.

A well-balanced, spicy sweet and smoky dram. To me, more pronounced smoke than in the Highland Park 12yo bottling. Rich and intense with a perfect drinking strength. Good balance of soft fruits, a lovely malty/vanilla sweetness and hot spices. The palate, however, doesn't deliver all of the delicate flavours the nose promises. Especially the lovely fruitiness. Nevertheless, undoubtedly a well crafted and highly drinkable dram. https://www.whisky-connaisseur.de/tasting-notes-english/highland-park/
    • Nose
The nose starts off with gentle peat smoke, followed by sweet malted barley and a touch of beeswax. Then a delicate fruitiness arrives with apricots, tangerines and lemon curd, accompanied by vanilla and burnt toffee. Heather in the back with a slightly maritime edge.
    • Taste
Pleasantly sweet start on the palate with vanilla, toffee, and honey. This is followed by a warming spiciness of oak, black pepper and subtle cloves. While being wrapped in delicate peat smoke, notes of malted barley, oatcakes and cereals linger with heather towards the finish.
    • Finish
The finish is medium-long, warm and subtle sweet with toffee and honey. Becomes drier on the tail with spiced oak, nutmeg, cloves and a touch of smoke.

With water: A few drops of water tame the smokiness while more oak is coming through. The lovely fruitiness remains stable. Significantly spicy on the palate with oak, cracked black pepper, nutmeg and cloves. Less fruity with only a touch of vanilla and smoke. The finish shows medium length with prickling oak and a slightly creamy touch of caramel. Becomes bitter and very dry on the tail.

I haven't been entirely won over by the 12yo-ish single casks HP has put out lately for various markets, but the noses of those casks are completely out of this world compared to this slightly pedestrian one. The price is fair, though.

One thing I'm hoping is that now the valkyrie's come, it means HP's viking gimmick is finally going to Valhalla.
    • Nose
Smokier than contemporary HP12. The smoke is greasy, slightly sooty instead of that familiar, soft HP peat. Saltwater and grilled meats. Branches. Neither vivid nor bold, and feels youthful.
    • Taste
Flabby, oily body. Quite a bit of peat with greasy wood char, like the ambience of a campfire gone out after the sausages have already been cooked and eaten. Some distant refill sherry vibes? Stronger than HP12 but lacking that smoothness that age provides. Maybe this is higher PPM than usual? In total it feels like Dark Origins, the baby version.
    • Finish
Hollow, apart from the peat. All the stuff happened on the tongue rather than in the finish. Feels young. Tinny tail with some celery.

I like the bottle, makes you want to whisky. The nose then nothing half and nothing whole, mouth but pretty yummy (but then not quite as doll as the bottle design or the expectations aroused thereby ;-)).
I say, if the smell was as good as the taste, you might just let the € 70 go, but that's more of a collector's display. (After all, better than the previously tasted colleague Sigurd).
    • Nose
first nothing, only after 5-10 minutes is so slowly smelling, a sip of water is also helpful, then dark chocolate, the later drifts towards the earth (old leather, plus a fresh note, lemon or slightly pungent? - so It can not really decide - and a bit of green stuff, herbaceous.

Quite weird HP with heavily peated. I like it. The weakness is the finish.
    • Nose
Mainly peat and sherry. But there is a fresh hay, rubber, phosphorus, salty caramel, vanilla and honeyed apple.
    • Taste
Oily, creamy. Big dose of peat, smoked ham, pepper, milk chocolate, orange peel, caramel, honey and vanilla.
    • Finish
Medium length, sour. Antique leather and tobacco.

    • Taste
Very oily, peaty, also little smoky, subtle sweetness, less fruity than on the nose
    • Finish
Medium long, warm, little leathery and leafy, a tad bitter in the end

    Conclusion and pictures on: https://tomtrinkt.de
    • Nose
In the first few minutes I find the Highland Park slightly alcoholic (subtle stinging in the nose), but after ten to 15 minutes in the glass, the nose is much more pleasant. A summery freshness with bright fruits and plenty of honey caresses my nose tip. I see green apples, pears, apricots and citrus fruits, followed by plenty of vanilla and caramel. The background is always a pleasant smoke. Echoes of oak spiciness are already detectable, albeit very discreet. After a good 20 minutes, red fruits flash, fresh strawberries and raspberries push forward. Very complex - makes you want more!
    • Taste
The mouthfeel is pleasantly oily and soft at the beginning, then a noticeable pepperiness begins at the tip of the tongue. The smoke is much more dominant than expected (for my taste more intense than the Highland Park 12 years), the fruit notes are still very cloudy. The second sip is dominated by smoke and pepperiness, the bright fruits, in combination with vanilla and honey, from the nose have (unfortunately) difficult to set flavor accents. Delicately bitter chocolate, leather and hints of red fruits make for a reasonably complex taste profile, even if it can not convince me 100% in terms of balance and harmony.
    • Finish
With goodwill medium. The smoke also dominates the finish of the malt. The sweet, bright fruits can set a last exclamation point very quickly, but fade very fast. The oak notes are now spicy, a slight bitterness and a noticeable dryness in the mouth makes itself felt. Well.

In the right context, I like the Valkyrie quite well. The nose is remarkable and leaves - in my opinion - also bottlings like the ICE, the Odin or others behind. The taste then good to neat, with decreasing tendency towards the end. The departure then rather weak. With the issue price in my eyes but fair priced, I would not want to pay more.
    • Nose
Starts very promising, you have to let the malt. Beautiful fruit notes of different characteristics, very fresh. Sometimes the lighter fruits like pears and grapes, then the darker, red fruits. Nice interplay of used barrels. All this in front of a subtle smoky note, which remains inconspicuous in the background, After a while, the typical ex-Bourbon flavors such as honey and a touch of vanilla join. But, I immediately like the nose.
    • Taste
First thought - violent opposition to the nose. Here now much earthier, dirtier and smoky. The fruit notes from the nose initially go completely under. It takes a while for subtle honey and light ginger / pepper notes to emerge from the peat and smoke. This is definitely smoother than the bottlings of the core range. That's always interesting! A bit of oak is added, with no bitterness or dry notes. Small criticism - regardless of the smoke the Valkyrie seems very tame, almost a little watery after the first moment. Somehow there is missing the "Pep", regardless of the alcohol strength I miss something.
    • Finish
Rather short, you can see from the smoke, which naturally adheres to the palate for a long time. Again, I can not shake off the thought that a little more alcohol would have given the whole malt a different direction. This leaves some spicy oak, which now leaves a slightly dry mouth, the inevitable smoke and - yes, that was it by and large.

Arranges to taste between the 12s and the 18s. For the issue price of about 70 € perfectly ok, but no revelation.
    • Nose
Honey, light citrus, caramel, some leather, kumquats, a hint of hay, light smoke in the background
    • Taste
Honey, some oak, light to medium smokes, slight spiciness
    • Finish
Medium long, the spice invigorates the mouth.

Valkyrie is the first of Highland Park’s new Viking Legend series. Richer than the 10 and 12yo, the emphasis is on rich spice and aromatic smoke, with plenty of heather-rich Orkney peat. The next two Viking Legend bottlings – Valknut and Valhalla – will follow next year and in 2019.
