Delicious oily-fruity-spicy. Very much like his Oloroso brother, one year doesn't matter that much. Very light wood smoke.

  7. erikz scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

This is a good sherried whisky, but the problem for me is that it's quite sulphurous on the palate and during the finish. But beside this the the sherry casks complement the Hazelburn profile quite well, so I think its still worth 83 points.

The Hazelburns come from the Springbank stills. They have not been beat. That's the main selling point, so to speak; not beat. All in all, this is astonishing, since with this exceptionally good whisky I can still taste unmistakably peat. Licorice, licorice, dried apricots, cherries, raisins on rum - and in the aftertaste unmistakable fire and peat. Very good whisky that continues to please. Too bad it's empty. Even more unfortunate that it is increasingly difficult to get a decent price. I paid 65 euros six months ago, now it is only just under 100 euros. And damn nearly empty too.

Very tasty Hazelburn which is also tasted blindly as well
    a springbank could go through.
Its 2019 and 2020 successors are significantly better.
Especially the 14 year old that was released in 2019.

Quite alright and interesting, not spectacular
    • Nose
Salted Caramel, leather, sherry, honey, floral, orange juice, biskuit. Many notes here state "tin bucket", but to me it's rather copper coins.
    • Taste
Sparkling, herbal candy, sherry, rosmarine, essential oils.
    • Finish
Salty, herbs, rough, orange juice, nutty.

Wonderful whisky to drink, and drink, and drink.
    • Nose
Christmas cupcake, candy of cherry plums, a bowl of fruit. Ripe grape.
    • Taste
Taste. Melon. Pear. And again the melon.
    • Finish
The aftertaste is sweet, and the sweetness slowly decreases.

  20. dongolzo81 scored this whisky 75 points Expert Senior

Dominated by aromas, which I classify as missing notes. Significant sulfur, gunpowder that one almost thinks it was slightly smoky, tin buckets and a little sherry. Far too hot for 47.1%, oak unbalanced. He then drowns with water. The very tasty Oloroso note keeps it palatable.
Another proof of my incompatibility with the Springbank distillery.

Intense arrival, feels organic and grassy, more on the milky and creamy side. Modern sherry profile, on the elegant side. Some soy sauce and boiled egg yolk (Funny!). Coffee appears after a sip, and some raw bloody meat.
    • Taste
      88 88
Sweet, pretty fruity, more on dried fruits. The texture is beautiful, not too thick, and flow freely in your mouth. Nice tannin and oakiness.
    • Finish
      88 88
Dry, nutty and slightly bitter. Becomes fresher after a few sips. Lemon and pear. A pretty long finish.

  22. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Pleasantly subtle influence of the Oloroso barrel. Nicely composed. It's fun to drink.
    • Nose
The first impression comes across as rather sour, light Ztirus notes, nutty, a basic sweetness lies above everything, quite fruity, if you smell the acidity, creamy milk chocolate, biscuit, we are always sweeter and more pleasing, the fruit goes a little bit towards sour cherry
    • Taste
creamy, nice sweet sherry influence, a hint of sulfur, roasted aromas, quite dry on the palate, nut, chocolate, but here rather bittersweet, a dash of orange juice, pleasant mouthfeel
    • Finish
grainy behind, the chocolate comes through more strongly, the mouthfeel becomes even drier, fruit on the palate, light acidity, a few more chewed hazelnuts

Old, musty, leathery, tobacco. The looks at first impression quite difficult and significantly older than 13 years. On the tongue then the surprise: Fierce smoke and ashes? Tar? Was not Hazelburn the non-smoky version of the Springbank distillery? And why do you not notice anything in the nose? Pretty oblique ...
In the further course, the aromas combine and settle down with milk chocolate. What unfortunately sparks in between is a youthful bright fruit note (apple, maybe even pineapple). That does not seem to match the flavors of the beginning and taste on the tongue. As a result, he seems a bit out of round, which he misses the crucial points for the 90s region. The finish is a bit one-dimensional and above all dry.
The whisky can stand a few drops of water.

    • Nose
Quite fine, on the bitter orange zest. Aromatic and rich in crunchy dried fruits, with a very fat nut.
    • Taste
Pretty dry, with spices, dried fruits. Touch is delicate.
    • Finish
Generous finish, but with little evolution.

      Enthusiasm 3/5

A great whisky. Complex and yet tasty. In the aroma I do not feel the sherry as intense as on the palate, where it brings wonderful fruit and tobacco notes.
    • Nose
      89 89
Sour cucumbers, apples, rhubarb, honey. Sweet and sour aromas complement each other very harmoniously. A mineral note and extinct campfire.
    • Taste
      88 88
Salt, now darker fruit (plum), guava, sea buckthorn, sage, cocoa.
    • Finish
      91 91
Sandalwood, tobacco, apricots, dry-nutty sherry. Smokes slowly with a hint of smoke, tobacco and dried fruit.
      Long.

  28. Totoro scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Nutty-meaty Oloroso, coal smoke, ash, engine oil, bitter orange marmalade, and graphite wrapped around an acidic / malty core. Lovely refill character, sheer throwback joy in the age of first-fill sherry Frankensteins.

Perhaps a tad too acerbic and tart for some, but hey, this is (thinly disguised and triple-distilled) Springbank, so that comes with the territory.

Loves air - in the glass and in the bottle.

Did this one H2H with the 2004 14y Oloroso. It appear to be two completely different whiskies, where the 13yo is much more sour, and stronger alcohol. The 14yo has this heavier red fruit sherrycask flavours.
The 14yo is much better in my opinion.
    • Nose
      86 86
Strong alcohol, some sour fruits, prunes, raisins, citrus now too. Some marzipan, floral, and strawberry. Later on even some sulphur, and applebeignets.
    • Taste
      85 85
Pretty smooth, just a little tingling. Sweet, vanilla, milk chocolate, some orange. Later on some caramel.
    • Finish
      86 86
A little more pepper now, some dark chocolate and some tobacco, and bitter now as well. Pretty long, more tobacco, and now a taste like the smell of a car-showroom.

Nice whisky with wonderful sherry nose (felt 1 meter away from the nosing glass). The taste is pleasant but slightly bitter (is it Hazelburn signature note?). Easy going balanced single malt with great drinkability but a bit overpriced as for me.
    • Nose
Wonderfully sweet and sherried, sultanas and dried apricots, overripe pears, vanilla, fudge, some tropical fruits, water opens honey and earthy notes
    • Taste

Fresh butter and raisins make this a very satisfying chewy malt, which softens on the palate to become more Christmas pudding and brandy butter.

A longish and rather dry finish culminating in a just hint of wet bonfire.

I have to admit that I'm such a small Springbank fanboy. Therefore, it is not surprising that he tastes me. This malt also benefited from the oxidation. But I think that, for example, I like the Springbank 12 CS a bit better.
    • Nose
Of course he also has this typical filthiness of the Springbank Distillery. Then raisins. Rotten grapes. Caramel. Rose water. Rose hip. Also mineral notes. Then it gets spicier. Freshly sawn wood. Tobacco. Forest floor. Pencil.
    • Taste
A lot of caramel, toffee and cream candy. Figs and dates. Wine notes. Jostaberries. Then apple pie with cinnamon. Marzipan. In the mouth comes to the dirtiness now also some Springbank smoke. Wet pebbles. Cocoa beans.
    • Finish
      Walnut. White coffee. Licorice.

Springbank as I love him, with an interesting twist. Less intense than normal Springbank, which is made up for by the great yeasty and mature sherry influences. For me, the more interesting alternative to 15-year-old Springbank and definitely a purchase candidate.
    • Nose
At first I was afraid he was going to sweat, and luckily a little nipper showed the opposite. Almost perfumed, typical Springbank, very salty, less wet pebbles, rather tarnished flint, and violets. Including yeasty oloros, and fresh lemons. Black coffee as a sign for striking wood influence already in the nose. Hazelnut liqueur.
    • Taste
The perfumed violet / flint note continues here, ripe sherry, dark, yeasty, fully ripe plums, walnuts. Distinct oak influence, in combination with the great sherry flavors, the whisky looks more mature than 13 years.
    • Finish
Hefig, black, hot, coffee, more mature sherry notes, freshly beaten flint and wet pebbles.

N- Open up quite grassy, with stale scents of chilled chocolate's bar and lots of red dates, followed by more raisin and dark fruit after aired out the greenish tinge. Thick milky and cooked malt reveals with firm texture. Semi-expressive if to compare to other great singular cask type bottling by HB.

P- Authentically Oloroso as it is, loud and astringent mandarin orange peel. Dryness building up with more tart fruits come fore, damped tobacco leaf as well the lightest hint of mineral lurking. Bitter chocolate and herbs at the tail with flinty nuance.

F- Medium-long, baked cookies with chocolate and dried fruit chips, some crushed hazelnut and almond mix, subtly spicy with drift of molasses.

Pleasant, airy, "transparent" mole, perfectly balanced, very light, but powerful enough and rich, springy, young enough, but it does not bother.
    • Nose
Open, dry, light smoke-peaty notes, mineral shades - drying plaster, stone crumb; grain, fresh vegetables, green spicy herbs, fruit and citrus tones in the background, weak wine motifs.
    • Taste
Light, saturated, lemonade-mineral, lemons, floral-herbal tones, light peaty notes, faint smoke, exploding caramel.
    • Finish
Light, airy, lemon-mineral, light, sweet confectionery notes, spicy oak, quite a bit of smoke and peat.

Beautiful old school whisky. Completely in my alley.
    • Nose
Vanilla, coconut, cork, cloves, apple vinegar, limestone and something like a peat. After fifteen minutes in the glass, it becomes more fruity and sweeter, towards apricot jam.
    • Taste
Full-sweet entry (fruit sweets: snacks) and lots of wood tones. Coconut and clove. Something a fruity acid, like apple vinegar. Runs seamlessly into the finish, with a smoke that is very oldschool subtly present.

Strong and strong whisky, the power is not so pleasant with you, heats up nicely and leaves a feeling of taste for a long time. I was surprised mainly by the pepper, maybe the most precious whisky I ever drank? Thank you for your taste!
    • Nose
Heavy, frumpy fruit of tropical origin, the acidity of the gooseberry, the peat and above all the honest portion of the peppermint, this is what makes it dirty. Further, a piece of sturgeon (cinnamon, raisins, apple acidity) and we also add sherry influence and rotting forest hustle (maybe it sounds a bit negative, but I think it is in good shape, you almost replace a little walk through a forest). (90 b)
    • Taste
Almost 47.1% of alcohol, but it's got grain! Peat peat flooded her mouth, fruitlessly, or heritage. On the tongue there is a heavy and dry sherry dryness. Dozvuk is very long. Pepper dominates, but sherry toast dryness is also prudent. (90 b)

    • Nose
At the beginning of the typical for Hazelburn metal buckets, the whole is played by a sweet mixture of coffee, chocolate and grapes, oily, a subtle spicy note is then dominant, dried tomatoes with olives, very complex and interesting

Copper polish, honey, yellow raisin, minerals, limestone, plaster, papaya, peat, blueberry, liquorice and cherry. Later tangerine peel and green banana. Water adds green apple peel and pineapple.
    • Taste
      87 87
Oily, peaty, peppery and waxy. Honey, papaya, fig, liquorice and orange. A splash of water easily tears apart that lovely texture, better keep it as full strength.
    • Finish
      88 88
Great unity of the thick waxy honeyed texture and the peat. Mango, cherry, caramel, vanilla and apple in the background. Eventually some toasted - slightly burnt - brown bread.

Nose: first sniff: horse stable and damp gras, okay let's let is standing for a wee couple of minutes.

Nose (pt 2): there we have it, wonderful. Chalky notes, the minerals are present too as is seen more often with Springbank and kin. Almonds (or Pecannuts as someone suggested) clearly originating from the cask.

also a whim of a spiritual fruitiness thingy, lets call it white grapes.

Taste: wonderfully complex, dynamic and nicely layered. quite a lot to discover and enjoy. Fruits related to sherry, minerals, hint of peatsmoke, and yellow apples.

Finish: long, next to the still lingering taste, some cookie dough and pears come along.

[May, 2017]  I had this dram during a Springbank Masterclass tasting at the Campbeltown whisky festival.

The nose is all about a modern sherry style with raisins, marzipan, demara sugars and wooden notes.  It arrives a little (tongue) coating in the mouth without hot or peppery moments.  The taste is on vanilla-toffee and sherry-induced flavours again (red berries jam, creme brulee).  The finish adds dark chocolatey flavours and is neither bitter nor dry, just like a creamy liqueur.  Some water smoothens the dram and releases more chocolatey flavours that are really nice.  But too much flattens it out.

This dram proves that the modern sherry style can produce a very delicious whisky too...

    • Nose
tree sap, sour bread, yeast, very light fruits, sugars
    • Taste
fruity, sour bread, barbecued pork, yeast
    • Finish

He needs time and first 1-2 slaps until it opens properly and you have fun with it - and what a one!
Nose: mineral, slightly earthy, marzipan, raisins, mirabelles, it is already evident oak with coffee and oak barrique Really delicious and clearly a Springbank (only without the smoke).
Taste: creamy and light on the tongue, now marked Oloroso notes, orange peel, chocolate cream, pepper, sweetened dried fruit, again slightly mineral. The finish is then dry with slightly nutty Oloroso, bittersweet chocolate and coffee. Quite bitter without being unpleasant and damn long is the departure.
Very nice and characterful whisky which is soft and pleasing at the same time but also has depth and edges. But you have to get involved (do not expect a modern sherry bomb) and give it some time.

Nose: Raisin, tobacco. Fairly light. Slight hazelnut smoke. Palate: Woody spices swell in the mouth. Dry fruit. Finale: The spices explode, peppered. Wooded drought supported. Verdict: (Too) wise all along, I waited (and would have preferred) more presence. But nice like daily dram, though.

    brilliant, basta.
if you would like to taste a clean version of springbank 12 you´ll have to try this.
    90/100
    • Nose
fresh, fruity and slightly spirity is the first impression. undoubtedly springbank distillery. give it a few minutes to open.
slightly chalky with freshly peeled mandarins.hints of oak and hints of earl grey tea
very simple but very good. it never becomes loud but speaks insistently if you know what I mean.
    • Taste
brilliant! take springbank 12yo and leave the peat and dirt away. there you have it.
fat, almost oily with a big attack without any harshness.
must have been a rather inactive oloroso cask, there are no dried fruits and big spices that you would expect. but no reason to complain. it shows the distillery character brilliantly.
fruit against  chalk, cannot say more.
    • Finish
      very clean, medium to long
