Johnnie Walker 18 year old BSW, 40%.

30ml sample at home, July 2022.

Very dark golden. It could conceivably be natural, but I very much doubt that it is.

Aroma is musty refill casks, powdered chalk, some waxy citrus, opening up to pineapple cube sweets and gummy bears. Starts with musty wood and opens up into tropical fruit juice. Over time it becomes musty again. A mixed bag.

    Body is watery.

Taste is salty and musty up front, some fruits in the middle and charred on the finish and linger. Not underpowered despite the low abv.

The oak becomes a little yoghurty over time unfortunately. Impression of crystalline grain whisky seasoned with musty oaky malts. Then that lactic pungency.

This is a mixed bag. Not bad, not great. I like the style of JW blends but I don't like the 'milky' impression and some of the musty casks that have partly been used here. Ok stuff though. 3.35/80

Freshly uncorked, it was quickly present, but gained in complexity the longer it breathed in the glass. Fruit, vanilla sweetness, some chocolate and a light spiciness. Hardly anything to guess from the grain content, no bitterness, no sprightliness. The oak note is well integrated, the 40% make it a palatable and uncomplicated all-night dram.
Without a doubt the best blend I've had so far.
Maintained this level for all fellow tasters over a 32 day period.

round and velvety, lots of sweetness, fruit, vanilla and caramel

surprisingly powerful in attack, lining the mouth. Warming velvety mouthfeel. A pleasant oak spice joins everything the nose offers
    • Finish

medium length, white pepper, well integrated, traces of oak. vanilla and fruit sweetness. No hint of smoke or grain bitterness

    • Nose

first note: sweet, sour, fruity, apple, some vanilla and yeast, honey, somehow also like cake
The sourness is dominant (fermented fruits)
    • Taste
      85 85
Soft and slightly peppery, light woody note,
becomes creamy, buttery, vanilla, sweet, honey
    • Finish
      84 84
Tannins come through (mucous membranes become dry)
      light peppery notes linger
      overall medium lasting

Johnnie Walker Gold Label was first created in 1920 to celebrate Johnnie Walker's 100th anniversary. It remains a well-kept secret. The name Gold Label comes from the river where gold was first found in Scotland and which is fed by the spring whose water is also found in this whiskey.

Can't say this one does anything wrong per se. Even the grain whisky does not show up much in taste or smell. It's balanced and the nose is really soothing imho. The taste is pleasant, but also unprecise and though the finish lingers a bit - making it better than most younger blends @ 12 years - the whole development is rather short and simplistic, especially for the age. Short: Would not rejected if sb bought it for me at a bar, but see no need to engage it on my own with so many better malts at better price/performance ratio at hand, JW Green Label included.

Pours medium dark colored gold . Scent is fairly mild. Wood. Gentle alcohol. Taste is full, medium sweet. Fairly drying by the oak. Some sharp oaky edge to it, reminding me of a glenfiddich. Lovely.

For the money (50 €) and in this yearbook it is an excellent blend that you won't buy anywhere else. Very mild, quite sweet, fruity with a smoky haze at the very end, makes me crave for another dram.
    • Nose
      85 85
fresh, fruity, apples, sugar syrup, vanilla, meadow, some smoke.
    • Taste
      86 86
quite smooth, dark chocolate, vanilla, coffee, raisins, nuts, pepper
    • Finish
      85 85
medium, sweet, oaky, slightly spicy and honey-bitter tip with a cigarette in the background.

For an 18 year old, I found him thin. Even with the (only) 40%, the alcohol stands out strongly. In the nose floral notes, in the background rose petals, almost soapy. Then thin and crisp in the mouth. Short finish, far too short. In terms of price-performance ratio, the Green Label is preferable for this brand.

They are whisky's designed for different occuptions, this fits into the cold night categorie, to keep the cold chill at bay while sitting and relaxing before going to bed or in bed, you pick?

You need to let this whisky sit in the mouth for a good while before you can appreciate the long finish, otherwise it's quite a short finish.

For the price and age, it's one of the better 18 available and very enjoyable. The 2nd or 3rd best JW core expression available.

You can drink it for about 50 €, especially since it gives 200ml extra ...
    • Nose
Very nice oak aroma, soft, ripe.
    • Taste
Somewhat spicy in the taste. But here too pleasant wood flavors. Not smoky.
