Sharp and dry with phenol notes wrapped in hints of wood, bitter citruses and caramel.

    Mashed Potatoes
This is the very first time I am trying Yamazakura! I have no idea what the 963 stand s for, but I do know this is a blend of malt and grain whisky. Japanese? Nope. Sasanokawa does have a distillery, but they produce only saké and shochu, so this must be imported whisky again. The ABV tells me to keep water handy.
Very grainy nose with hints of mashed potatoes (no kidding), famer’s butter, toffee and some nougat. A single yellow apple, all the way in the back.
It is sweet, but not outspoken. Pretty sturdy arrival, but not scorching, despite the high ABV. Now I mostly get nuts, vanilla and lemon peel. Truth be told, it’s not too bad.
The finish is pretty long, somewhat drying but oh, so sweet.
My expecations were low, but they were easily fulfilled. That does not mean this is a great whisky – far from it – but I am pleasantly surprised.

N- On the contrast to the Black, this one surprise me with full load of zest and boiled citrus, very vibrant yet breezy with lemon, ginger, wood furniture, as well farm-y and earthy with underlying turf peat, tar and eucalyptus. (Oops, just checked, is 58%). Evolved to sugar cane, agricole-y reeds, almond chocolate slab, charmly peated, complex, full of energy on each twist and turn. Hefty medicinal smokes, beautiful candy notes and nutty at tail. (93/23)

P- Agile, medley swimmer and superbly executed on all aspects. Sweaty and yeasty at first, then nutty, lemon and lime attacks with layer of burn caramel and soft feint, sulphur and camphor, perfect creamy mouthfeel with good strength for a touch of nice heats to burn off the excess sweetness. (95/23)

F- Long, full, spicy, citrusy, sweet medicinal peats and chewy. May be young but masterfully blended. Actually I am not sure whether I am trying a fine Single Malt or a Blended now. (90/22)

B/B- 96/24 Superb value for this quality. Moved away well over priced Hibiki.
