[February, 2018]  I am not a fan of "underaged" whisky at all and so I am not a fan of Kilchoman so far (maybe this will change once the Kilchoman whisky gets adult).  Nevertheless I try it out of curiosity to follow the development of such an interesting distillery from time to time...

The colour is deep copper and the texture shows a good oiliness of fat tears and slow legs.  The nose offers a herbal-driven profile with maritime peaty and some nutty aromas.  Not too bad for such a young dram.  It arrives warming and nicely coating on the palate with some minor peppery moments.  The taste is sweeter than the nose on barley sugars and some fruits (berries).  There are a lot of spices in there (curry powder, nutmeg, salt) and a little tobacco flavour.  The finish is of medium length and dries out (cold ashes, metals) that I do not really like in this context.  Some water releases more aromas in the nose but it flattens the taste, unfortunately.  I like the neat dram better.

This for sure is one of the better young NAS whiskies that I tried so far.  It shows a fine character already and I can imagine that Kilchoman might develop a complex and interesting profile once it matured for 18 years or more...

On the nose, lemon, peat iodine, a little lemon, peach and a little earth on strong spices!
    • Nose
      peat, lemon, all sweet enough!
spices, vanilla, cold ashes, fairly monolithic.

Interesting whisky even if it is NAS. Intense in the mouth, combines sweetness and saltiness, adds some smoke- or pepper-realated roughness. Intense, memorable dram.
    • Nose
Saltiness, chocolate sweetness - interesting combination on the nose
    • Taste
Intense in the mouth, salty on the one hand, sweet on the other. Chocolate, overripe fruit. All that is cut in half by smoky sharpness and peppery notes
    • Finish
      Sharp, smoky and peppery

I know that tasting notes depends on mood ans state of mind. May be that is why this whisky disappointed me a little and I expected more. All the elements of peat and sherry go through the flavor, taste and finish without any complexity... But I am ready to give it a chance and may be change my mind.

Delicate and smooth. Perfect and balanced mix of peaty smoke and sherry vine with hints of sweet stewed fruits.
    • Taste

Pleasant peat and sherry. A little bit dry with hints of sweet stewed and dried fruits. I my opinion it cold be bolder and richer.
    • Finish

Peaty smoke, sherry vine and grapes. A little bit plain and not so long.

Despite the utilisation of sherry casks, Kilchoman Sanaig remains a particularly coastal whisky. There’s certainly a fair amount of sweetness here, but this is played off against some sharp mineral aromas and flavours, making for a balanced and well integrated expression. Those searching for big overt sherry-driven flavours from Kilchoman should probably focus on either Loch Gorm or on one of the distillery’s single cask releases. Sanaig offers more gradation – its vatting of casks creating an expression where the sherry influence is supporting the wider array of spirit and peat flavours, rather than taking charge.

    • Nose
Initially sweet, fruity and only moderately peated - this benefits from a little time in the glass. Cinnamon apples, gentle toffee and coffee grounds mingle with minerality (wet slate) and demi-coastal peat. A little resting reveals slightly more tropical aromas of pineapple. The smoke is an interesting mix of in-land burnt wood, coastal salinity and seaweed, and straight up medicinal – it’s relatively restrained compared to many other young Islay whiskies (including from this distillery). In the background, cinnamon, nutmeg and earthiness – all of which are heightened through resting. The addition of water really amplifies the brininess of this whisky – salt, rook pools and beech pebbles. It also adds in some smoked chilli pepper.
    • Taste
Quite mineral and spicy on the arrival – salt, granite and pepperiness. Then, sweetness – toffee apples, caramel and mocha. An interesting juxtaposition. Running throughout is mineral/medicinal peat smoke – coal dust, brine and very slight TCP. In the mid to back palate there are some nuances – tanned leather, marzipan and citrus. Reducing this whisky has a quite interesting effect on its texture – it takes on a character of syrupy sea water – very mineral and quite citric.
    • Finish
Medium in length with salty lemons, and dry, ashy smoke.
