[March, 2017]  Is there anything like a bad Caol Ila?  So far I had none but some rather average only like https://www.whiskybase.com/whisky/4500/caol-ila-1975-hb.  So let us check with this new release:

This is a full load of vanilla driven Caol Ila with significant peaty and maritime notes in the nose.  The initial taste is quite mouth-coating again with a huge vanilla spike as is the body.  If you love such a profile you will adore this dram (I do), if not do not even try it...

The finish is quite long and again (you guess it, I swear) on a truckload of vanilla.  Interestingly the peaty and maritime flavours are most present in the nose and not really significant both on the palate and during the finish.  With water it gets even more sweeter and vanilla-ish, all the other aromas vanish...

Definitely not a bad Caol Ila and depending on your vanilla preference either an excellent or average dram.  I vote for in-between..

Average dram. A good starter for any Islay tasting.

If you like a strong vanilla you will find them everywhere. Of course, the smoke is neat, but he gives the vanilla more than enough space. Both together harmonize really great. I like the combination pretty well.

Like a scoop of vanilla ice cream dropped into cold campfire ash.

    • Nose
Very slight adhesive note, but that flies if you let him stand for a moment. Very good like this typical fresh, salty Caol Ila smoke. Hardly any fruit notes, but very strong and tasty Bourbon vanilla.
    • Taste
Salty and maritime, the strong vanilla is also supported here. In principle, I would call that a combination of ash and vanilla ice cream.
    • Finish
The smoke settles well and the vanilla is of course still present, but hiding discreetly behind the smoke.
