    • Nose
      Full sherry aromas rise from the glass. Especially raspberries, juicy oranges and raisins are immediately present with a hint of vanilla in the background. Some leather, fine tobacco notes, a large portion of nuts and spicy wood notes contrast with the fruity sweetness. The nose makes you want more!
    • Taste
      Very strong onset (46% alcohol) with many dark, sweet fruits. Raspberries, blackcurrants, plums, raisins and dates set clear accents. Delicately bitter chocolate, nuts, roasted aromas, a little cinnamon and also the tobacco, leathery and spicy wood notes, which are already perceptible in the nose, form a nice contrast to the sweet, ripe fruits. Here at the "Harmony Level" everything is just right for me - a great balance of the different flavors was created.
    • Finish
      Medium to long finish. The residual sweetness of the fruity berries quickly gives way to the tobacco and woody notes. The oak cargo becomes spicier and slightly drier, with a subtle bitterness. Again, there is some leather and chocolate again.

    A smash in the matter of individuality. Like a sweaty old boxer.
    • Nose
      At the first smelling of raspberries, plums, barely juicy, a decent torrent of sweetness, after a while a little vanilla smell. After 20 minutes no single fruit left, but the sherry.
    • Taste
      Without water you can barely keep the Malt in the mouth for 20 seconds, which pushes against the teeth - good. Short to hear leather, then tart chocolate, tobacco spreads on the palate, this taste will remain. It gets dry, it stays dry. I do not taste the alcohol, the malt is heavy and lowers on the tongue.
    • Finish
      The fruitiness disappears from the palate, slight dryness remains. Leatheriness. Typical old sherry, somehow wet. After a few minutes: fresh grass on the tongue - very interesting.

    [June, 2017]  ...and the devil p...ed in another cask (or where else come these nasty sulphury flavours of struck matches from - as the copper of the stills and condensers usually filters out all the natural sulphury aromas of the spirit, that is why they are made of expensive copper instead of cheaper steel).  Whenever someone in a Scottish distillery detects a sulphury cask he (or she) cries out "S..t!  This is rubbish!" and then calls the marketing department to announce a further release for the German market as this is the only one that welcomes sulphurous whisky releases.  Guess why "whisky.de" is able to offer this 19 year old heavily sherried dram for 60 Euro only (I bet they do not subsidies it but make a profit margin even at this price).

    I am german by myself but even I do not understand why Germans still love the smell of gunpowder and burnt matches (after two lost wars).  It is not just that they do not recognise this flavour (as no one mentions it in his/her tasting note) - many Germans (even some very good friends of mine) obviously appreciate "the smell of hell".  No, I will not impose my taste on anyone else - whoever loves this stuff please enjoy as much of it as you like.  But to me these flavours block my tastebuds for hours (if not days) and kill all other aromas instantly - that is why I hate sulphur (besides its scurfy and disgusting mouthfeel).  Sorry folks, but this IS rubbish to me!

    PS:  Immediately after opening this bottle the sulphury nose and taste is extreme (66 points), if you leave the bottle open for a while it will vanish slowly to a somewhat bearable level (still not enjoyable to me - 78 points).  I comped this bottle to a (german!) guy that liked its taste...

    [June, 2018]  I just read the tasting note of this at whiskyfun where they write "pristine, pure, perfect earthy, clean sherry".  Okay, I have to accept that nowadays sulphurous sherry is seen as clean and pure and obviously many people like such a taste.  Still I do not - so most probably I am just an ignorant old-fashioned whisky drinker that denies to adapt to the beautiful new world of whisky flavours...

    Saulecker, tasty, great! And for 55 € (or even only 45-50, if you have acquired them with the TWS club membership) a super bargain.
    Must be a great camp where you just tilt together 5 consecutive barrels and then come out something like that.

      a bit sour (fermenting fall fruit), then fruity-sweet, cherry / strawberry jam, raisins, chocolate cake, old leather, sweet tobacco ... promising!
    • Taste
      a lot of chocolate ... brandy beans, kirsch chocolates ... chocolate goes in the direction of sweetened coffee, but a fruity schnapps note remains, as well as oak, leather, gentle pungency, fat, full-bodied, yummy
    • Finish
      long, warm, sweet, dark chocolate with black cherry / blackberry syrup

    [September, 2017]  What a chiseler!  The guy I comped this heavily sulphur-spoiled bottle sent me some mystery samples to try (samples with no information about what it is).  Among them a small sample of this devilish stuff from my own bottle...

    As he and his german friends obviously liked it he probably wanted to test if my tastebuds have converted in the meantime.  Sorry, but they did not!  Still this is heavily sulphur-spoiled whisky with a disgusting mouthfeel that I do not like.  But what I really like is that others were able to enjoy this bottle finally - that otherwise would have gone down the drain...

    american oak, I guess ... whisky and sherry are kind of seperated, actually I would say it lacks some single malt character, this is full on sherry. Probably that cask  shortly seasoned soaked up  a lot of young sherry. Especially in the finish I expected it to be more substantial. Don't get me wrong, this no bad stuff, but at least I did expect more complexity and ripe aromas like leather, tobacco etc. Reminds me of A'bunadhs in a way, but older, if you know what I mean ... to sum it up: not overly complex, but unique, kind of odd, not too sweet (like that) heavily sherried single malt of decent age for a very good price.

      ripe cherries, overbrewed fruit tea, even apple tea, very "heavy", doesn't open up very quickly, very fresh (oloroso?) sherry, menthol, almonds, touch of rosewater, a bit dirty, some struck matches, old coins, touch of christmas spices, balsamic vinegar
    • Taste
      thick, very winy mouthfeel, "fresh"/ un-aged dry red wine, nutmeg, raspberry fizzy candy, again overbrewed fruit tea, there is some oak developing (not too sure if that's european...), orange peal, maybe a hint of leather/tobacco
    • Finish
      yep, there is a lot of oak, still that imense sherry influence, some menthol, dries even more, but to me lacks some substance, not too long...

    For a generally pleasing club bottling this Glenrothes is pretty rough and edgy advised. The selected barrels have done a great job, and in addition to the powerful sherry aromas and the earthy Brennereicharakter true. Certainly not for everyone, but not overly complex and demanding.
    • Nose
      The first smell I immediately have an old scuffed musty leather sofa with greasy armrests in mind, in which already slowly press the rusty springs - of course, I could have just synonymous simply "slight sulfur notes" write, but does not sound so vividly ... :)
      In addition, a whole box of dried fruit, especially plums, figs, apricots, dark salt caramel, raisins, ripe grapefruit, sour cherries, malt, a hint of vanilla, tart orange peel and especially a full load of slightly musty earthy oak, all very strong and pretty rough.
    • Taste
      The onset is strong, dry and warm, again a lot of dried fruit and juicy grapefruit, roasted pine nuts, dark spices, candied orange peel, some licorice and a permanent nice tart base tone of soaked wood.
    • Finish
      In the medium-long finish dominate a tart fruitiness of grapefruit, Zarbitterschokolade, cloves, anise and especially old oak.

    So, I have read some tasting notes of self-proclaimed experts. Sounds bloomy and professional. But, honestly are you kidding me? I know everything is a matter of taste. And there are some people that simply ignore our whisky bible opinions. However, with sulphur there is no doubt that he is right. Of course, if you are hyping or if you obtain free samples from say HP, Deanston, Caol Ila, G&M or DL, then you say things like "Deanston is on the rise" or "Macallan is on its way down" (since no free samples for alcoholics). 

    The Heribert Fassbaender of the whisky scene in Germany (and Germans will probably know what I am refering to) is a fantastic lead guy and he is a real character (Go Horst!). The last batch was already strange. This one is better but not a full success. 

    The intrinsic problem with Glenrothes and sulphur cannot be overcome. It can be handled a bit by selecting a proper finish, reloading them in frsh sherry casks or the likes or re-charr them. 

    Nose: A beautiful combination of deep substances, sulphur, sack cloth, mushroom smell, old stick furniture, sultanas (as in SULPHUR), stewed in sulphured cognac and calvados, sulphur again, dark fruits and it could be a perfect combination if the casks had been selected properly before filling them. The word that springs to mind is ‘sulphurious’. 

    Mouth: Pressed, pretty, perfect sulphury very unclean sherry. Added  walnut wine or liquor or maybe even walnuts, added pomerol and syrah, fleshy and a bit Mortlach like, added tequila, vermut, Vodka, German pear schnaps, raspberry schnaps, mint an odd peppery catch in the end. Now adding some random combination of words such as garden leaves, balsamic vinaigrette, lapsang souchong sirup, white tea, nutella, maggi, old table clothes, the greeny inside of some purple rose, moonshine sauce (do you remember from your visit in thailand?), frshly squeezed grapefruit juice, avocados, caramel latte glace.

    Finish: Long, thin, blonde and shiny. All on silky notes of sulphurtanas, moist Devonshire cake (the blue one), black oil straight from the can,  and Winni Pu juice. 

    Comments: Seriously, when will Germans notice that Brits are rejecting these kind of liquids or use them for Blends? This is a real bang for your buck whisky if you are the seller. Signatory’s warehouses should come up with something better than this. I bought lots of the decanter editions, not one bad one. Beautiful, pristinely sherried Glenrothes captured at a perfect age for sulphur and Germans.

    Despite the heavy fresh rubber which might go away after a while, it is very balanced with a good complexity - great

      Fresh rubber galore, like I just put new tyres into my garage, dried fruits, figs, dates, baked prunes, chocolate, sherry notes, xmas spice - really not bad
    • Taste
      Oily, creamy, spices, nutmeg, wood notes, good sweetness, a bit cooked oranges, dried fruits, chocolate and xmas spice again - very good
    • Finish
      Long, warm, sweet, more spices, hints of leather notes
