a pleasant to drink, very successful whisky
from the nose to the finish a changeable complex beautiful line
Excitement and harmony are equally present
the ranking is perfect: nose, mouth and finish are on one level

and again a PE Caol Ila
thank you for the lovely present :)
    • Nose
      after pouring without movement
      dusty cornfield on summer evening
      Apricot meat with salty seawater
slight odor of iodine from the sea
      with movement
      Coconut chocolate, shallow incense notes
a smooth fruit smell like polished nectarine
Dirty notes of sandy sea mud
the notes are constantly being reinvented
in the smoke are lemon leaves
    • Taste
      a smooth tasty start
      Kiwi / banana / melon
      Milk chocolate / coconut
sparkling shower on the tongue (citrus fruit) a very pleasant mouthfeel, which subsequently turns smokey and easily brings gum with fruit sweetness into chocolate sauce
    • Finish
      a bit salty / spicy
      complex and constantly changing
      barrel notes

The bottle has just been opened so maybe it's too early for a final judgement but my first impression is that it falls a little bit flat in the end. The finish is rather short and not really complex. I liked the Caol Ila 1984 Ultimate Rare Reserve by van Wees and the Caol Ila 1984 by Dewar Rattray better. This opinion was shared by two experienced Whisky buddies who also tasted it. I paid 378€ for this Caol Ila which is already pretty steep. Current prices of 500€ and more are simply ridiculous and only aimed at collectors who will probably never open their bottle. Let's see what this one will taste like during the next tasting sessions... I hope it will improve after being open for a while. For now, just one word: Underwhelming.

    93 Points, tastet 09.04.2017
    • Nose

Class nose, again one of these smelling Caol Ila. After 80 minutes, I am not yet tired of this nose.
First and foremost, there is the smell of seawater and spray, citrus fruit, the sweetness of vanilla and grilled banana. Despite the storage time, the raw material comes into play - dandruff barley malt rises in the nose. A slight touch of stable smell, the smoke is medically - old gauze bandage sticking to the iodine tincture. After some time, a nice fruitiness develops - Granny Smith, apricots and nectarines.
Adding water brings out a nice Wick Vaporub scent

The high level is maintained - an onset of creamy-sweet vanilla and banana brings with it. Then it tingles on the tongue like Ahoi Brause, a blend of the flavors lemon, raspberry and woodruff. The barrel storage is noticeable by subtle mint and menthol notes. Here, too, a subtle fruitiness of yellow-fleshed fruits.

Finish: Long, smoky, vanilla sweet and again minty freshness.

Grand Caol Ila, who had the best 80s CI yet so far in the glass.

Tasting notes by Billy Abbott (The Whisky Exchange)

Nose: Damp ash, apples and sea spray to start, with
tarry ropes and bandages following on behind. Sweetness builds, balanced
by damp earth notes and peaty smoke, with barley sugar and singed foam
Taste: Very sweet off the bat, with honey-drizzled
apples and marshmallows. Slowly the marshmallows get toasted and hints
of charcoal smoke rise up through the middle. Sweet herbal notes sit at
the back – mint and tarragon.
Finish: Medicinal smoke and charcoal fade to leave baked apples and wine gums.
